(Old) Trip Planning in the MMP

Mornin’ all. Was up real early after a semi-late night and it’s now about sunrise on a semi-gray day. NWS sez 67/19 on the way to 82/28 w scattered rain in the late afternoon.

Doggio: hope your work holds up. Does anyone have any insight into the bigger picture? Is this the post-covid reduction in online buying dropping the volume to something more like e.g. 2018, or maybe an effect of Amazon building up their own parcel service when they used to contract all that to you folks, or ???

Best of luck in any case.

I always liked Marty Feldman, but this guy’s eyes were even weirder if you can imagine such a thing. Poor bastard.

When I was laid off from flying the first time I grew a big beard. When I went back to the airline 3 years later I had to shave it. My wife’s comment at the time: “I liked you better with the beard. It hid so much more of your face.” She was kidding of course, but it was a great line. I miss her wit and her kindness.

Ouch!

I’m always amazed at how many mobility ramp retrofits I see with sharp turns, no railings, etc. Somebody with a mobility challenge going off a 3" curb (much less a 9" one) is a guaranteed fall with likely injury. Whether they drop a shoe, a walker leg, or a scooter wheel over that edge, once that happens they’re goin’ down hard. And usually with no way to self-recover or self-rescue. They’re down until somebody finds them.

{{{Hugs}}}.

Do you suppose you could work out a way to get him off Fox / Carlson? Having him forget those channels might be very helpful. More helpful than quitting coffee.

Yes. Taters I’m sorry your hubs is being childish here.

The married MMP women seem to be suffering from an infestation of goofy man-childs in their lives. Some of which is unavoidable aging and some of which is inflicted by the guys.

JtC that does sound like a really tasty pork roast. Thanks for sharing. The glaze is probably sweeter than my decrepit pancreas can stand though.

She’d consider an appetizer as an entree. And often not finish it.

Some way into our relationship I realized that her prior MO as a single person was to mostly obviate cooking and stretch her budget by eating out once, then eating 3 or 4 meals of leftovers from whatever she brought home. Which led to very unorthodox ideas about what makes a good breakfast.

Unrelated to the leftovers …
If I offered her some of whatever I ordered, she’d refuse it saying “If I’d wanted the chicken, I’d have ordered the chicken”. It amounted to an oppositional POV where my offer to share sounded to her like me forcing my meal decision onto her. If she took any of the chicken that meant I had made a decision that affected her behavior. Which is me being controlling and evil. “Nope! Not gonna fall for that!” was her mindset. Sigh. So tiring to deal with. Happily that’s over.

Meanwhile my POV at every meal can be summed up as “Bring one of each and we’ll graze on it all. I wanna try everything.” I make that joke to waiters fairly often and one of these days with enough friends at a place with a small enough menu I’m gonna do it for real. Just to say I’ve done it. :yum:

I love it when my writing delivers the effect I was aiming for. Thank you! You’ve made my day. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Clutter can wait. Playing with the grands sounds … grand!!

Teela sorry to hear your rellenos project had a glitch. But IME anything that involves having more poblanos in your life is good news.

As to me:
About to feed, then might golf or beach or ???. I got the cruise laundry done last night, and started the check-in process for the next cruise. Other than a stream of trivial Amazons coming in I have no real errands in the upcoming days.

Also oughta do my half of the joint taxes. That’ll be a decent approximation to the final numbers; HL was retired all of 2023 and not drawing SS while I was working then drawing SS survivor’s benefits. So her income contribution is a relatively minor fraction of the whole.

Given the short overnight last night and several previous nights, an afternoon nap might be just the ticket. When emulating swampy is the order of the day, you know it’s gonna be a good one.

Assuming the rain cooperates I’m going to outdoor geezer disco tonight. Solo so far, but the day is yet young. Tonight’s band is probably not ideal for dancing, but they’ll be fun to listen to in any case. I’ve not seen them perform before.

Cheers all!!

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s all of 13c/56f with no predicted change, and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s cloudy and still not a fucking good day to blast unsolicited dick pics to random fucking people.” OK, so we won’t do that then…

Had a busy few days with work and stuff, and it’s been tiring. Travel has been better because the schoolies are on a break this week so the trains have been quieter, but the actual service hasn’t been very good. I was going out last night to see some bands, definitely wanted to see the first one which meant getting out of the house within about an hour of getting home from campus. Getting on a delayed train that then got stuck behind another one that had developed some kind of fault did not do my blood pressure any favours! Made it to the gig just in time!

JtC big hugs to you, just 'cos.

nellie I am so glad your eye problem got treated early and you are doing all the right things. And that was not whining, it was a genuine concern for you (and for us!).

Pilot we often use the same tactics with restaurant meals, too many things look good so we order different things just to share them.

doggio I hope work sorts itself out for you, Spot needs to be sure his supply of gooshy food is constant and up to standard.

OK, that’s as much as I remember I need to post about  We were out late last night so I didn’t go to the gym this morning, cats have been tended to, litter trays are clean but I need to haul another big bag of litter upstairs soon. I have no need to go into town today so I won’t bother, I think an afternoon of sloth on the sofa with a book and a snuggly cat is today’s plan.

Had to go out yesterday for a couple of grocery items, so the wife suggested we have lunch at a place called Red Cow. I usually avoid pub food, as it’s often poorly prepared. This place is known for artisan burgers, so we gave it a try, even though neither of us was in the mood for a burger. Happily, it turned out to be very good: excellent, in fact. I had lobster mac & cheese and the wife had a walleye fish-fry. The mac actually tasted of lobster (I’m guessing from a sauce made from lobster stock) and there were generous chunks of non-rubbery meat in there. The wife proclaimed her fish & chips to be crispy and tasty. We’ve been looking for a go-to place for lunch and may have found it.

Ordered another pet stair for Q’itih. She has trouble jumping up on things now, and loves the steps I got her to get on the bed. This one is shorter and will help her to get up on the couch and to her window perch.

Onward to breakfast.

Good morning, everyone.

It’s 39 degrees Fahrenheit, and a light rain is falling. Rain showers will continue throughout the morning, but by afternoon we’ll have cloudy skies and a high temperature of 51 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nellie, you were NOT whining, and I’m so glad everything will be alright.

JtC, I send continued hugs to you.

The water issue at my son’s apartment complex was caused by Evergreen’s (state college) main bursting, and the surge of water destroyed the head of out of the apartments’ main. Flohawks (plumbing company) was supposed to come out yesterday and repair it. I never heard anything more from my son about it, so I hope it was fixed and he now has water. Part of the reason he didn’t come up is because he has a sectional sofa being delivered sometime today, and it would have been a PITA and a lot of miles back and forth between our places.

Yes, I agree my husband is silly sometimes. The VR headset is something he really enjoys, it keeps him occupied and away from news which makes him cranky. So, taking care of this was really a selfish act on my part. I did point out that if something happens again, he’s on his own and will need to start looking for used parts from e-Bay since HP stopped making this particular headset and parts.

An old/friend neighbor reached out to my husband last night. My husband had pretty much cut off contact because this guy’s drinking was out of control. He was pretty much falling down drunk all the time, and it got to the point where I didn’t even want him in my house because it was loud and obnoxious. He quit drinking three months ago due to a health scare. I’m hoping it’s for good, but unless he went to rehab or something, I’m not sure it’ll even stick. Not even rehab helps with that, but I’m hopeful for him. Anyway, he came by for about 30 minutes last night and then left.

Okay, the pups are telling me it’s breakfast time. Gotta go.

Oh good lawd. Has anyone died over the color choices yet? I like the Norway Spruce, but think it would be too much for a large area. Perhaps Natural choice with the Spruce for trim?

Jtc has joined the committee. No one has died as yet. But you have hit on the main caution of the crew. A lot of green for a very nearly block long hallway. The good thing is that the hall has lots of doors, trim, and bump outs that will break up the green.

It is a good crew. Very respectful and accepting, a bit over cautious. After 2 years of talking about painting the hallway…well, there is painting happening.

The crew did come to some definite decisions. One was the trim colour. Kitty Gray 1589 | Benjamin Moore

Because my personal colour pallet is blue, green, black, grey; I do have walls that are very close to the Norway spruce and kitty grey.

Back in the day late wife and I belonged to a group of about 10 friends who’d go out to a different place every couple of weeks. Usually we got about 8 folks at any event. Some singles, some couples. Everyone would order an entree. When all the food came, you’d eat about 25% of your meal then pass your plate to the right. It was empty when it finally came back around to you. Sometimes forks or knives got passed to by mistake. Not a big deal.

Many waitstaff were kinda surprised to see this, since these were not meals served “family style”.

We loved it. The mentality of people who’d happily do such a thing are my kinda people.

I’m finally starting to see the benefits of meditation. Usually taking my son to swim class on Saturday morning stresses me the fuck out. I can’t explain why exactly, it’s just hard getting him in and out of swim diapers and swim clothes and because of the physical strain and time pressure it just shoots my blood pressure up (metaphorically, I think.)

This morning I got up at 6:10am, meditated for 25 and I was chill AF. Even encountered a flurry on the road this morning and I didn’t feel stressed. However getting him out of his swim trunks and back in his clothes was still a bit stressful. Basically I have to get him back into his pants, shoes and socks when the floor is soaking wet. So there’s an improvement but maybe that’s just an inherently stressful task.

Bonus: they were selling girl scout cookies at the pool. So I’m having milk and thin mints as I wind down afterward. Like my son, I thrive on routine.

I heard this guy on the 10% Happier podcast claiming that a bunch of respiratory illnesses can be improved by proper breathing, and I have asthma, so what the hell. I’m practicing breathing through my nose.

I’m going through what I can only describe as a self-care renaissance. I trace it all back to the tiny miracle that is the 1-2-3 method of waking up in the morning. I wish I had it twenty years ago.

I don’t think my husband is awake yet. He got home late from his first D&D session (first since Wee Weasel was born) but he texted me last night that he had a great time. That’s all I ever wanted for him, to have a thing he loves to do. It puts him in a much better mood and improves our relationship. And as a bonus I got a bunch of time to myself.

Yes, I am in ongoing talks with my boss, and we have agreed to prioritize the training on the database for me so that this doesn’t happen again.

Meanwhile I am at my absolute limit with federal grants issues, so next Grants Committee meeting I am going to start creating written policy and procedures with all the information we need, and everyone gets a one pager detailing their responsibilities, assigned roles in various federal systems, and calendar of responsibilities. I assumed everyone was on the same page with this but clearly not, so it’s time to crack down. It was the lack of such written guidance from previous employees that got us into this mess.

I’m other words, my job is about to become a job, with greater time demands, but I’m okay with that. I don’t have a full time work load as things stand - this will probably bring me about square.

@nelliebly I hope your eye feels better soon. Vent away, that sounds stressful! As a wise friend of mine once said, “Complaining is underrated.”

Yay!

Hugs to JtC

Waves to everybody else.

Tuesday my best friend in this country told me she’s moving back home in September. She won’t be coming back to Europe.

Wednesday, the host of the expat message board informed that the message board will close at the end of February. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and there’s a lot of good information there. The members are now trying to find a way to save the information, but it’s a really old version of vBulletin, so it won’t port easily.

Thursday, I found out that I will be the only remaining member of my team, as my coworker will leave the company at then end of the next month. Last year we were 5 people.

So it’s not been the best week.

Today I made lime chicken with green beans and couscous. Broke the wooden spatula, dropped it on the floor (spattering lime sauce everywhere), and managed to burn the green beans.

For good news, my dad went home on Friday. Hope to talk to my parents later today.

Anybody know how RealFish’s surgery went?

Surprise thin mints are good. Routines are very beneficial for people of all ages.

Now I should go work on tax papers. Dontwanna.

I went with FCD this morning when he got his McBreakfast. He waited while I ran into Food Lion for the russets, and I grabbed some 'nanners since the display was right there. Ten pounds of spuds for $7.49 - choke gasp wheeze! Yeah, I know, everything is going up.

Tomorrow, I’ll sort the spuds by size - I don’t want the twice-baked to be too gigantic, altho really big ones can be split in two. I’ll bake 'em, scoop 'em, mix up the innards, then re-stuff them, wrap them, and freeze them. The remaining russets will become soup or go into soup or be part of a scalloped casserole. I foresee some cooking this coming week.

Meanwhile, Daughter and the grands will be here in about an hour. I’m about to go downstairs and get a fire started, then make a stab at tidying. Maybe some rearranging also. Good times!

Morning all. As usual when I set the alarm clock, I woke an hour earlier than needed so have done a few morning chores and broken my fast and am now awaiting the call from the water leak detector people. Soccer at 2pm and then maybe a quick gym visit but otherwise not a real active Saturday. We did get rain last night and it is much cooler today, 30F now heading to only 42F but at least the rain has cleared out.

nellie, glad the eye problem wasn’t that serious, only eye patch(es) I ever wore was for some corneal scratches and didn’t do anything fancy with them…then again, I didn’t have teenagers to help…

Coppertone, keep on interviewing and don’t get down, things will get better soon I hope.

Pilot, nice pics and that ship looks a lot better than most of the cruise lines I’ve travelled with. Glad you had clear weather at Tulum, it was rainy and gloomy the day we were there. As for eating habits, that sounds like when I was on a tour in China, up north the food was all in the center on a wheel and you took what you wanted, in the southern area it was ‘family style’.

doggio, fingers crossed that the leadership doesn’t point their axes at you folks.

JtC, like Simon and Garfunkel sang, what a drag it is getting old. And second class sounds just right for that train.

FCM, glad the snow gave you a miss.

lucky, happy cooking!

cookie, that Red Cow place sure sounds like one for the ‘list’.

rocky, I can understand, having had my house painted a few years ago, the choices are nearly endless and it was tough, even for one person and having a committee agree…

Spicy, glad the stress levels are getting better. And dressing after activity, especially with a 3 year old (IIRC) in a crowded area is inherently stressful. And good luck drawing up the policies and procedures…making them is the easier part; getting everyone on-board may give you need for added meditation…

DIcey, ouch, losing that many anchors all at once does rock the boat considerably. Take care.

FCM, don;'t buy N.O.T., but been watching the Pepsi prices soar at Kroger, only but these days when it goes on sale.

OK, still no call, so will continue to wait patiently. Take care all.

Still going to be slow brief replies. Surgery went well, numbness getting a little better. Hating the collar but it’s a necessity. Probably going to rehab after this to help strengthen my arms and hands. Got to see Hubby, kids and Partner yesterday. Hubby on his way to see me now.

So progress. Gotta keep it short and sweet because holding my phone where I’m not bending my neck is tiring! Thanks for all the good wishes. All!

When one of my uncles shaved his beard off after 25 years, his youngest daughter (who was married with children of her own) was shocked, as she had no memory of her dad without one.

Vision does make quite the difference there. I do more high contrast stuff than I used to because of vision changes. I’d like to think that it’s for the better. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yay!

Back when I worked at a restaurant supply place, as an employee, I could buy anything except for client branded stuff for 5% above cost. My niece was a young mother who, along with her husband, were both working low paying jobs and going to school. I would pick her up a 50# sack of #2 potatoes for a little more than $5 about every six weeks. Between that and the cheese and pasta I’d take her, their grocery bill was pretty small. It’s hard to believe that potatoes have gone up that much in the last 16 years.

Glad that it wasn’t anything serious about your eyes nellie. You were right to get onto it right away though.

Hope that your recovery goes well fishy.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, KP done and a pot of veggie stock on the stove. It is cold AF here today (26F when I walked Nelson this morning and still hovering around freezing), so no dog park. I’ll get sheveled in a bit and head over to the grocery outlet to restock TP, condiments, snacks and chicken for the freezer (they do cut their own meat and the quality is just below that of Kroger, but better than Aldi or Wally World, but priced in that range or below)..

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

nellie, I’m so relieved for you that you got the eye problems figured out. It’s always better to know and thank goodness it didn’t get worse!

I managed to get my car out of the driveway this morning to run errands and achieve hair cuttage. Headed to lunch later and out to the tax lady, then drinks with a friend tonight. I’m going to make myself go to mom’s condo this weekend to clean more too. We’re at that point where we’ve gotten rid of the big stuff but the little stuff is now overwhelming. We’ve got to get this thing done.

Happened to me when the Navy decreed ‘no more beards’. None of my kids had ever seen me clean-shaven. I returned from deployment and they were freaked out for a bit, wondering who this person was with Dad’s voice.

Considering the last pic of him, would this be something Tobias would enjoy doing?

Well, the leak detection folks were here and…couldn’t detect a leak. They said anything they tried would probably lead to a false positive and the leak showed as 0.01 gallons/hr, so very minute. In their favor they didn’t charge me for the house call, said I should monitor it and if it gets worse to call them back. So more visits to the water meter and more records to keep. Or maybe I just was imagining it…

Anyway, leave for soccer in about an hour and then probably the gym (have some frustration to pedal off). I’m going to Olive Garden tomorrow for Eat Out Sunday Dinner, so will have to look for something else for tonight (thinking about Whalburgers).

Real Fish, glad it all went well and that you could give us a heads up. Now rest/recuperate/and rejoin us when you feel up to it.

On the beard front, I grew my first one in my 30’s, never forget my Mom’s expression when she saw it for the first time. I occasionally let my youth soccer teams shave it off, but I rather like having it now, so I always grow it back.

talkie, sounds like a busy weekend is in store; hope Murphy doesn’t wander by.

A bit longer heaving that usual, which is good for the ol’ wallet. Apparently Shaggy has never heard of Temu. I don’t know if this means they blew $60mil on super Owl ads for nothing, or if it’s just Shaggy’s usual ID-10-T error.
So Spot’s usual cat food flavor(Nutro Indoor Cat) was out of stock for a couple of months, so he’s been getting Hairball Control flavor. Until yesterday when I got the Indoor flavor again. Yesterday he ate it. Today?
Me: < fills bowl >
Spot: < looks at me, flings toy mouse into bowl >
Me: “It’s your usual.”
Spot: < covers bowl with sheet of paper >
Me: < pulls sheet off > “Eat it.”
Spot: < flops over > “Look, I have died of starvation.”
Me: “No. Eat. It.”
Spot: < rolls on back, twitches paws > “Behold! I have died even more.
Me: “Whatever, dude.”

It’s going to pre-COVID industry wide. FedEx is folding Ground and Express together, and doing cuts, too.

Kids have been fed and we’re in the basement again. It’s nice and toasty.

On the sucky side, somehow my debit card number was compromised. I just use it at the credit union ATM so I guess someone stuck a skimmer there? Luckily, Fraud Prevention called and killed the card based on a charge of a buck anna half at some site in England. I need to go to the credit union to order a new card. Pain in the patoot.

Tobias is in pull-ups - he’s almost potty trained! So much sooner and easier than his sister. And after only 6 weeks, I can see the advantage of his preschool in his language. Freekin’ little genius!

Daughter has decided she won’t take a job if she can’t work in jeans and flipflops… Interesting way to make a career choice.

My sister in law has been looking for a new job. She hates where she is, but she will only consider a job where she can work from home.

Um, wasn’t that Rolling Stones (“Mother’s Little Helper”)?

Speaking of grocery prices, I had to pick up a few things yesterday, including one at a store I don’t usually shop at (I can do better elsewhere on prices) for a good special on 80% lean ground beef. $1.99/lb is worth stocking up. 2 big packs came home with me for a total of about $26. According to my receipt, at that store’s normal price for that item, I’d have paid over $100 for those packs if it hadn’t been on special. Actually, I wouldn’t have bought it at that price, which if I can do math today works out to around $8/lb, which is IMO beyond ridiculous for ground beef.
