Had to read that one to CatMom.
Got a dusting of snow overnight, just to make things all sparkly.
Monkey is being very snuggly and making it difficult to leave my warm, cozy bed and face the Long Night shift, but I must, so I shall.
Special Girl was out sick yesterday and I expect we’ll be short-handed again tonight, unless someone feels like covering her closing shift.
Tomorrow, oddly, will be my day off. Can’t remember the last time I didn’t work a Sunday shift. { shrug } Oh, well. Off to the salt mines drive-thru window I go!
Howdy Y’all! Slothful have we been today. An early sup was et and now fartfest ensues. Life is a thrill a minute here at da cave!
It’s turned into quite the lazy Saturday. Listened to Spouse Weasel rave about his D&D Campaign for an hour (I must be getting relationship points for this), did some cross stitch while listening to a podcast about Buddhism, got the afternoon sleepies and laid down on the bed, but Wee Weasel wanted to know about how my space heater works, commence lesson on degrees F as well as degree angles, all without having to get up from my bed (score!) I have a couple of timers that are visual, so they show the pie of how much time you have left. So he kept moving the dial and asking me how many degrees. Followed by a rousing period of pen and paper math - just math. With some inexplicable wavy lines. Don’t look at me, I just follow orders. He thinks fractions are hilarious for some reason.
Now we’re just hanging out until Spouse Weasel returns with the groceries (Wow, he’s back already!) Tonight for dinner I’m thinking salmon and sauteed fresh green beans. That might make up for the entire box of thin mints I ate.
Tomorrow I’m catching up with some people I haven’t seen since before Wee Weasel was born. They are both in my husband’s campaign so I’m hoping to rekindle the friendship spark in a more regular way.
This is exactly what weekends should be like, IMO, not running around all over the place.
I’m preparing for going dark**, as is my plan every Saturday thru Sunday night. So I shall see you all in the next MMP!
I don’t love “Digital Sabbath” but I need to come up with something catchy to describe my technology-free days. Maybe something about mindfulness…
LOL. What do you consider an active day? Because 2x exercise would count in my book.
Glad it went well. Sending you many healing vibes!!
SO glad they caught that! Getting money back from banks is a pain, I hear.
NICE!!! I’m sure you will have a fabulous time!
Be sure to let us know how it went! (Don’t buy grated cheese, they put an anti-caking agent on the shreds that stops the cheese from melting properly.)
You would think there would be standards or something, a lady down the street has a ramp with such a steep angle that I doubt a wheelchair could go up it.
Our ramp is just fine, he was carrying a large, awkwardly shaped box in his arms (instead of using the cart like I had suggested) so he couldn’t see where he was putting his feet. He misjudged the base of the ramp, hooked his foot on the bottom of the rail post and landed on the concrete base, behind my car where he wouldn’t be seen from the road.
I sure do wish I could, but he watches them on his comp and that isn’t going away.
So, ummmm, what sort of games can be played on that sort of thing? Does it require getting out of your chair and moving your body? I think I might want to look into a system like that for hubs.
Those are the best sort of afternoons, I hope you enjoyed it!
LOL!!! I just love volunteer committees!
Yeah, dang about everything…but how did you break your wooden spatula? They are pretty durable, I’ve never managed to break one and I’m not as nice to my tools as I should be.
It is good to know that things are already getting better. Keep it up! Post when you can, but focus on getting well. More good thoughts heading your way.
Hubs’ color vision is much sharper than mine. Back when I was buying needlepoint kits, he had to sort my threads for me because I had so much trouble with close shades. The nice volunteers at my favorite needlework store always seem happy to choose and pull colors for me so I guess asking them to do it isn’t that unusual.
Can you fill a box or bins to bring home to sort through while watching the evening weather report? You wouldn’t have as many memories tugging at you that way.
Our dog barked at bare faced hubs. Once she got a good sniff, she was OK again. Our cats didn’t notice.
Cracks up.
Not much happened here, it has been warming up, currently 67F at 1622, so I dealt with the new weed growth in the back yard. I’ll try to get to the ones in the front tomorrow, but it probably won’t happen. I want to make lasagna on Monday, so I need to get three sorts of cheese going and the timings will be wonky.
If I don’t get to the weeds tomorrow, they will be there the next day. There used to be a family with goats in the area and they would bring their goats to your yard to do weed control for not a lot of money, I sure do miss them.
NF and I finally settled on an open time for lunch. We will be going to the Canton Dragon, that place has been around so long hubs and I practically know the menu by heart. The prices have of course gone up over the years, but the menu, food and portion sizes remain unchanged.
They used to have specialty drinks with fancy glasses and garnishes but now it is just the standard restaurant drink menu so we don’t bother. A Singapore Sling just doesn’t taste as good without an umbrella.
I think that’s EXACTLY what we’ll need to do. I told my husband I’m running over there with a few bankers boxes tomorrow and just chuck everything in my trunk so we can move on.
I’ve never had a Singapore sling but it sounds fabulous. I’m waiting for my friend at the wine bar now. Glad I was able to get out tonight already.
The chiles rellenos were awesome. I stuffed them with a mixture of freshly grated Oaxaqueno and Monterey jack cheeses.
However, they were a major chore to make. I think I dirtied every dish in the kitchen. I stuffed three chiles, which was fortunate, because the first two were perfect and the third suffered a blowout in the hot oil and leaked all its cheese out. The good two I plated and topped with fresh homemade tomato sauce and served with plenty of Mexican rice.
But I think I’ll let the nearby taqueria prepare my rellenos from now on. They’re not cheap in the restaurant, but it’s worth it not to have to wash a whole kitchenful of dishes and pots and pans afterwards.
Lunch break. Someone brought in homemade taco meat and the fixin’s, so I’m stuffing my face.
We’re short two people tonight, but it’s been O.K. so far.
There was a breathtaking sunset earlier, tie-dye effect of orange and red and violet. The drive-thru window faces west, which is a PITA when the sun is glaring directly into my eyeballs, but I did get a great view of the ever-shifting colors.
I need a smoke break.
I have that issue with inks. I’ve gotten to the point of taking blank business cards and doing both first and second generation stamps, along with the color and manufacturer and store them in dark > light sample groups. If all else fails, I’ll take get help from someone with better contrast vision. One of my biggest issues is the cartridge booklets that use light pastels on white in their pics and descriptions. Give us old lady cardmakers a break and use some black ink, fer cryin’ out loud.
Restocked the freezer from the outlet, along with two quarts of veggie broth put up and a MarketPlace buy made. I’m gonna play around in the studio before surfing some more.
Yep. My bad. Was probably thinking of “Old Friends”
Well, soccer is mostly sitting/standing around encouraging the kids and making the substitutions so everyone plays about the same amount of time, so not really to active.
FCM, glad your Fraud Prevention folks/computer were on the job.
JtC, hope he learns from that fall, it could have been much worse. And I checked the Caton Dragon site, looking at that picture I would bet it was an Olive Garden sometime in it’s life (or was built by the same designer).
Soccer went well (we tied 3-3, the kids did real good) and got about an hour of gym time in before going to Whalburgers for burgers (thank you, Cpt. Obvious) that have filled me up and put me in a better mood. However, I cam home after being out for nearly five hours and found my water meter has risen by 10 gallons…may have to call a different leak company to come out. Will do 1-2 more system checks to be sure, however.
Still, am in a better mood than I was this morning, guess I need to get out more. But it didn;t get past 40F today, so hopefully it’ll be warmer tomorrow.
Take care all.
Good luck w that. Seriously, but skeptically. Cats hate being herded. And adding cat-herding to your other duties may be … problematic as the kids say.
Meanwhile congrats on your meditation journey!!
Yaay. Other than that your week sounds kinda sucky. I’m sorry you’re watching your community unravel.
The boat’s been in operation only 2-1/2 years. They got it ready just before COVID then it sat unused for almost 3 years. Oops.
Yaay realfish! Wishing you continued speedy improvement.
Ouch! OTOH I’m doing my damnednest to keep you and Amazon in clover. New hobbies need new toys.
Conversely the passenger industry is on fire. Insane growth rates.
Lotsa that goin’ on. Suggests that folks who want in-person jobs will find lots of openings and little competition.
There are standards. What there isn’t is small-town licensed contractors who know and follow them. The cheapest thing that looks like a ramp costs 25% of what a fully-compliant one does.
If you (any you) is over 60 and can’t see where your feet are landing, you’re cruisin’ for a certain fall soon. Maybe not today, but someday. We just gotta stop carrying things like that.
Yaay!!! Shame about the disaster area.
Yaay! Today had been gray here but cleared up late. I slept through sunset though. See below …
When we got to that place with both my parents we simply got a dumpster and were done in a couple hours.
Seriously, her stuff isn’t your memories, her stuff is no better or worse than that of some random old lady across town, and the world is awash in stuff.
The instant the task becomes a burden not a pleasure, simply wipe it out and move on. You won’t regret it.
As to.me, I accidentally posted too soon. See below …
I didn’t read how you make them, but I only dirty one bowl and a small dish. I have two poblanos in the fridge, and I keep thinking I need to cook them. I char the skins, either under the broiler or with a blowtorch. I like the blowtorch better, as it doesn’t over-cook the chiles. After charring, I put them in a bag for five minutes and then peel the skin off, slice them, clean out the seeds, and stuff them. I separate one egg for each chile, and put the yolks in a small dish. The whites go into a mixing bowl, where they are whipped to form peaks. Fold in the yolks, and fry in oil. They’re easy to make, but the charring and peeling are a little bit of a chore.
We don’t eat chiles relleno from restaurants. Mi Esposa says they have ‘refrigerator taste’. She’ll only have them if I make them.
As do I. I use an ice bath after charring and add a tablespoon of cornmeal to the batter.
OR if I am cooking for a crowd, I mix up a big batch of egg batter, put half of that in a hot iron skillet, then add a layer of chopped chilis, a generous layer of shredded cheese, cover with the rest of the batter and put back in the 400F oven until the top is golden brown.
A little distracted here, hearing all about a murder a mile away ATM. Damn.
ETA: Damn Jane that’s not good. Is the town having problems or is this a once in a decade event?
As to me …
The day was unseasonably warm: we hit 82/28. But alternately sunny or cloudy with the occasional sprinkle. I tried to sunbathe a couple time but got headfaked each time. Oh well.
Had late breakfast at better-than-Denny’s, then hit a couple groc stores for random tidbits. Why is buying ordinary non-food stuff so damned difficult these days?
Headed home, started my half of the taxes, realized I needed paperwork from the storage unit ref my condo purchase & sale plus some other unrelated stuff, and some Amazon had arrived at the postal place. Off I went & got late lunch at the scruffy 1960s fried chicken stand which I ate in a nearby park since both(!) their 2-top tables were occupied.
Once home I finished my half of the taxes and was seized of a nap. So slept from 5pm to 6:30. Having been up since 5am on 5 hours sleep that wasn’t a surprise. But it was welcome.
Which is good because I’m at geezer disco now at 9pm & going strong.
The band is good, but not highly danceable so far. Lotsa Fleetwood Mac & similar era/genre. Bit of a light crowd; the forecast had been for intermittent rain & I bet lotsa folks made different plans. Meanwhile here I sit outdoors in a polo & skinny jeans looking straight up at a clear bright half Moon and the few stars able to defeat the lights of a 6M person metroblob.
Which reminds me … for the early birds in the crowd, Venus is spectacular in the east right now from about 2h before sunrise to maybe 20 minutes after sunrise. Take a look if you’re up anyhow.
The drinks here are good, and the Caesar salad w blackened chicken is (now mostly “was”) huge & pleasant. For once the help isn’t overwhelmed by the crowd. Yaay!
Band just back from break: Linda Ronstadt’s You’re no Good. Followed by Stevie Wonder’s Sneakin’ Out The Back Door and now Bonnie Raitt’s Something to Talk About. And The Police’s Message in a Bottle.
Not sure where I’ll go after the band wraps at 11pm, but it’ll be good.
Cheers all. Good luck w the rest of the weekend…!
From what I’m getting, mental illness played a big part. People are saying drugs are involved, but the body was easily seen through the open windows…and drugs tend to make people paranoid enough that blinds stay closed. It is very sad.
I’m glad the band is good, the diner is going to be opening again soon and we are looking forward to listening to the local bands again.
We had grilled oysters and beer (well, an 8.4 ABV brown ale for me) for dinner, and then went down to a new bakery where Mrs. L.A. bought a very large lemon & white chocolate cookie (I had a small bite, and it was good), and a very large slice of veggie quiche. She’s going to have the quiche for breakfast. I guess I’ll make myself a sausage, salsa, and cheese frittata.
I napped. Spot came and cuddled with me. Which sounds cute, till you realize it fells like a half inch thick I Beam lying on your ribcage. I had a Sazarac after the catectomy, some Asian BBQ chicken, and am watching late night hockey.
Getting things done around here is like elephants mating:
It’s done at a high level
It’s done with a lot of yelling and screaming
It takes 2 years to see any results.
But glad it’s finally done.
Hope it continues to be so.
Yay! But yeah, those are one of the things I leave to the pros.
I like Disaster Area
Enjoy!
I forgot to bring this up earlier, but have you done a dye test on your toilets recently? Put a couple of drops of red food coloring in the tank and check the color of the bowl water half an hour or so later. If the bowl water has red in it, your flapper is leaking, or you have a gasket leak.
Maybe try that before paying someone else to come out. You can get food colors in the baking aisle of your grocery store, you will probably have to buy a box with four colors of dye, use the red or green because the now highly diluted blue or yellow might be hard to see against the white of the bowl.
It isn’t just cartridge booklets, thread makers are using them on the labels now.
Hence my handy dandy utility cart. As soon as we bought this place, I started making changes to allow us to age in place. You know what Dorothy Parker has to say about that, right? (You can lead a horticulture but you can’t make her think.)
Sadly it seems as though I was right about the mental illness thing being heavily involved in the murder. All of those words I don’t say about the state of medical care/insurance in the US? They go double for the state of mental health care in the US.
Sports illustrated has stared doing this same sort of crap too. Pale red text on a white page? I can’t read that.
Chiles relenos sound great, but, I agree with everyone else, something to leave to the pros. They’ve got the grease splash space set. I hate trying to deep fry anything at home.
JtC Good call on checking the terlet flaps.
Chilly up here in NY (17 ferret height). I’m quite thankful for the hooded flannel shirt my bro got me for x-mas. It really is remarkable how much tossing a hood on keeps you warm.
Very strong, bitterly cold winds tonight. The gusts were so bad I could feel the smallest, lightest pizzas getting some lift in my hands, and one poor bastard LOST HIS CREDIT CARD to the wind!
He wasn’t holding it tightly enough and it slipped from his grasp and blew off.
We were definitely feeling the pinch of being short staffed, but Carless Co-worker stayed late, again (he’s pulling some serious overtime this week) and overall we did well.
Lotsa tips, too - I think folks felt sorry for me shivering in the cold.
Hoping to spend my Blessed Day Off either relaxing with my friend who has the hot tub & half-dozen cats, or “relaxing” with G.C.*
I’ve even made tentative noises about going to his place (I’ve still never seen it) but haven’t heard back yet from either of them.
C’mon, people, I almost never have a weekend day off!!
I wanna marinade in a hot tub, or else [ ending of sentence redacted for decorum’s sake ].
Meanwhile, I have a pot pie in the oven - I “cheated” and nuked it for part of the time to half-cook it. Otherwise it takes 50 minutes in the oven and ain’t nobody got time for all that, but baked IS better than only microwaved.
Tossed Monkey some treats to chase, so don’t let him lie to y’all and tell you how rough he has it.
