We need to have a Mumper sloth-in at your place. Think of the food! Think of the drink!
Indeedy we do! I fondle the store bought pimento cheese at my grocery store, but then always put it back, sighing ‘cause I know it would disappoint, not being made by swampy’s skilled hands. Did that just 2 days ago. No pimento cheese is better than not-swampy’s-pimento cheese. Need some of those cheese twists too. No reason not to make them with jane’s.
Hopefully doggio can be in charge of mixing up lovely violette cocktails for us delicate ladies. flyboy pours a mean cocktail I bet. Vieux carres for all!
Sign me up.
I still have some of swampies recipes from a long agp cookbook done in another board. I’ll look them up and can send you a list of the names.
What we really ought to do is a cookbook for the Dope. I know there have been numerous recipe threads, but if we just set up categories or something and asked Dopers to contribute their favorites, maybe up to five, that would be cool. This other board is now defunct, but swampie gave 26 recipes!!!’ And maybe I should ask the bear’s permission before I give them out.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It’s my Firday!
I need to make one. < adds Cachaça to Likker store list >
I see you work with some of my cow orkers.

Up especially stoopit early after a very late night. We did a video chat with Daughter - OMG, ain’t technology freekin’ amazing?!? She was home late from a corporate meeting at the school where she expected to be officially fired. Lemme tell you how much they lurves her…
First off, they want to try to save the school. They fired the old board and voted in a new one. And they asked Daughter if she was sure she no longer wanted the position of Headmistress - no, she didn’t. So rather than fire her, they’re keeping her on for 3 more weeks to help with the transition. Then they’re laying her off because the position has changed from when she was hired 2 years ago - that way, she can qualify for unemployment. (One of the members last night works in HR and knows how Merrylande law works.)
Then, the mother of one of the students is a job recruiter and she asked for Daughter’s resume. (Plus SIL’s sister asked for it, too.) And apparently more than one member of the corporate board think the previous head bailed because she knew what the county was about to do… something I suspect, tho Daughter is more charitable. Bottom line, lots of stress is off my little girl’s shoulders, and she has a little more breathing room and a lot of help in finding a new job. Now she just needs to figure out what that will be.
Meanwhile, today we’ll see the monster iceberg and then Elephant Island, as we get our first look at Antarctica. If we can’t see what we want from our balcony, we’ll find a place on deck. Exciting day ahead! Iceberg sighting theoretically in 4-ish hours!
Happy freezing Saturday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 62 Amurrkin out and mostly cloudy with a predicted high of 75 with light rain showers late afternoon/early evenin’. After today we go back to the 50s/mid60s range for highs which is much more normal for these parts. Another day of high sloth is planned, except for we shall have N.O.L. at the not to shabby Chinese hog trough buffet place for today’s main feed.
doggio beat me to postin’ a link to the Mumper recipe blog. There are a lot of really good recipes there.
CupCakes I make no claim to sooper sekrete recipes that I will take to my grave, so post away! I don’t invent recipes, just tweak 'em to my tastes.
Boo while it is true that I am appalled by sto’ boughten pimento cheese, there are a few that are pretty good. Don’t know if’n you can get it in your neck of the woods, but Palmetto brand pimento cheese is pretty good for commercial stuff. I’d look the other way while you bought it.
MOOOOOOM have fun starin’ at the ice berg. Glad daughter has such good folk to deal with. Hopefully this will make it all a lot easier for her to find a new gig.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Sattidy Y’all!
The Incomparable Sunflower has a Hamilton Ventura. I bought it for Her in or around 1997, when Men in Black was in the theaters.
Thick fog continues. We may not see the berg after all. Dammit. Supposedly, we’re 30 minutes away. Maybe it’ll lift. Maybe…
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 6c/43f with no predicted change, and cloudy. Weather app has wisdom to impart - “Stratus clouds are definitely the fucking shitbags of the meteorology world. Trust me, I know my fucking shit.”
I’ve had a busy day so far, been to the gym for a couple of hours then nipped home to get changed and whizz over to the hairdressers to get my barnet cut. Back home for a cup of tea, then we will be going into town for lunch at the Good Chinese Place, and errands, then home again to clean up, have an early dinner and head back into town to see a couple of bands. Of course, that means I intend to have no plans at all for tomorrow!
Moooom I hope the fog lifts and you get to see the iceberg! Good news for Daughter too, I’m glad she is losing some of that stress, and also getting some help deciding where to go next.
Pilot I have gone right off Her Ladyship now too, that was very childish and spiteful of her. Good for you in dealing with it so well.
Boo there is a fabulous cheese shop in the shopping centre which also houses the branch of Pets at Home where we do our fundraising for Little Paws. I suspect I would have to be forcibly removed from there! Chuckling Cheese Company
nellie good news on the tooth then? I hope life continues to bring you good stuff today too.
Coppertone hope your tooth issues can get sorted too, as well as your ears!
Right…time’s a-wasting…got to run!
Still foggy but there are a couple of berg pics on my FB.
Of the three languages I’ve had formal training in, Portuguese was the most difficult. One would think that as a Romance language, it would be less so. Part of the problem was that I was taught Brazilian and was then expected to function in Lisbon. But I agree with Jane that six months of immersion would have you speaking it fairly well.
Morning all. Woke up to more rain and it looks to continue for most of the day. It’s 52F out heading for 65F, so there is that. Indoor soccer for several hours this afternoon will keep me occupied and out of the house.
FCM, neat pictures. Sorry you don’t get to go below the Circle, on the ship I was on (much smaller) they had a ‘crossing the line’ ceremony like they do when you cross the International Date Line or Equator on a ship. But looking at the map you’re still going to see a lot. And glad Daughter has good people she is dealing with and hope to hear good news soon.
I have no language skills beyond English and there are days I struggle with it, so anyone who can converse in a second (or more) language earns my automatic respect.
JtC, nice cat pics, surely someone will give them a home.
red, glad the dog park gives Nelson time with his friends.
In all fairness, the jerk deserved it.
nellie, life is a series of ups and downs, often at the same time. You ride that rollercoaster about as well as anyone I know. Be well.
shoe, hope New Kid has a good excuse or you guys can get some more responsible cow-orkers so the teenagers can get to learn about real life…the out of work kind.
boo fae, enjoy the day!
OK, need to clean up and head out into the Deluge, catch up with y’all later.
It’s raining and we’ve left A23a in our wake. FCD got some amazing pics on his phone - I’ll share some when we get home. That hunk of ice was unbelievable!
Next, Elephant Island after supper tonight. The rest of the day is for chillage.
Fcm, I’m so glad that your daughter will have a soft landing. What a relief!
Jtc, a good day yesterday, cats and freezer both are in good places.
Well swampie, we could see this recipe from FCM. It’s not an iceberg though.
Cucumber-onion salad
contributed by FairyChatMom
3 large cucumbers, peeled and sliced into 1/4" thick disks
1 medium onion, sliced - sweet onions are the best
1/3 cup mayonnaise
2-3 Tbsp white vinegar (I prefer the larger amount)
1 tsp sugar
salt and pepper to taste.
Combine the mayo, vinegar, and sugar - it’s easiest in a shaker bottle, but you can whisk it, too. Put cukes and onions into a bowl with a lid or a large plastic bag. Pour mayo mixture over the veggies. Stir or toss to cover completely. You can add salt and pepper now, or do it when you serve it. This needs to sit at least an hour, but it’s best overnight. If you put it in the bag, just turn the bag over every few hours. Otherwise, stir it up in the bowl.
Yum Yum Yum!!
Or this from you.
Cheese Straws
contributed by swampbear
A southern delicacy. As I understand it, no southern marriage is legal unless cheese straws are served at the reception.
2 cups of all purpose flour One-half teaspoon of salt
2 cups of grated extra sharp cheddar cheese Cayenne pepper to taste
(that’s one 8 ounce package of cheese)
1 stick and two tablespoons of butter or (if you must) margarine, softened
Cream cheese and margarine together. I prefer my hands but a mixer will do. Combine the flour, pepper and salt and add to the cheese mixture a little at a time, mixing with your hands until you get a smooth consistency. Place mixture in a cookie press and use the star or bar press to push out into one to one and a half inch strips. Bake at 300 degrees until firm and the straws begin to brown, usually 12 to 15 minutes depending on the oven. Watch closely.
My ear stopped hurting, so thats good. Tooth still achy, especially when drinking. Going to walk to the library as I only have one book. Thats not enough.
Caffeinated!
Good morning, everyone.
It’s 50F and raining. It will rain pretty much all day (showers, light rain, rain); you get the drift. The expected high temperature is 59F. It’s been so soggy, that I’m going to start growing moss on my skin soon.
FCM, I saw your pics! Also, I’m very happy your daughter has a much gentler landing. That’s good news on all fronts!
nellie, I’m sorry about your friend’s doggo. It’s very kind of you to make a contribution in the dog’s name. I’m sorry too, about your sister’s troubles. She’s lucky to have a sister like you! Loved the video chat story with the dogs. I’m betting there was lots of head tilting, too.
pilot, I’m sorry her ladyship is being unladylike.
shoe, I’m sorry those two co-workers are pretty much useless. It’s too bad Sweet Manager doesn’t take a harder line with them and find replacements. On the other hand, it’s probably hard to find replacements so then you are even more short-handed. A double-edged sword, for sure.
Yesterday, we celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary. Well, as much as we could, anyway. Hubby went out and got lunch for us, brought me roses, and made a nice dinner. It’s tough to go anywhere with the pups here. We knew that going in.
We also found out yesterday a friend and former co-worker of my husband retired last November. We contacted them and initially were going to meet up for dinner when we could arrange for someone to dog sit. However, the plans changed, so he and his wife will now come to our place. I’ll make dinner, and we’ll hang out. They’ll probably stay the night, so I’ll need to have breakfast on hand too. I’m looking forward to seeing them. We’ve G since the early 90s and his wife is just a hoot. We used to hang out a lot more, but when my husband left his company, we saw each other less often.
Maisie seems to be pretty much back to normal. She ate with gusto yesterday, and her energy levels were much higher.
My son is supposed to come up today, and it’ll be good to see him. He and my husband have a great time hanging out and playing computer games together. Maybe, if there is a break in the rain, we can take the pups on walkies. He loves seeing those pups.
coppertone, I’m glad your ear stopped hurting.
Welp, I need to tidy up the kitchen. Maybe I’ll take out some butter and eggs so I can make a batch of cookies too.
Thank you, thank you everyone for your kind words. I FINALLY got the data I needed - and I did have a little screwup in what I asked for, but we can correct it after we submit the application if necessary (they usually circle back with more questions.) I woke up at 7am ready to go, and finished up a glorious 12-page draft. It is a beautiful summary of how we’ve managed to turn things around this year. I have a little bit of information to confirm and discuss with my colleague on Monday, but there’s no reason I won’t submit this by COB Monday. If I had to submit it now, as-is, I could. It’s funny, when we discussed this application and report with the funder, she asked me if I felt comfortable writing what we had discussed (which is a weird question for a funder to ask, but anyway.) I replied, “Sure. I can write anything.” I felt awkward about that little brag in the moment, but there it is. (The funder replied, “We know that is definitely true” because she’s read my applications for the last eight years.) I’m really fucking good at grant writing, and I love doing it, so it’s a cycle that perpetuates itself.
With everything I’ve gone through the last two weeks, and how I’ve felt in the past in similar situations, I think I have an anxiety problem (I mean, we all knew this.) So I need to change how I relate to my job, and get to the point where I can accept that I’ve done all I can when things like this happen. I at least need to do that until I have all the power and control over when and how I access program data. I suspect it’s going to be a steep learning curve to learn the system, but oh the sweet relief when I don’t have to wait on this stuff from other people.
I also need to get back to that wonderful technique of not thinking about things that upset me. I was getting so full of myself in November and December because of how well it worked, but I fell off the wagon. (Did I mention I also have a half dozen federal reports due this week? January is the crazy.)
OCD is hard. This is my husband’s specialization as a clinical psychologist (that and tic disorders.) The demand for OCD services is insane. He has a wait list two years long - and that’s his cutoff. The proper treatment requires that a therapist has a great deal of training, and there are areas where people can’t even access anyone with that training. He is one of maybe three specialists in a major metropolitan area.
You don’t have to play her game. I don’t know why people forget that they loved each other, once, with the way they treat each other during divorce. It’s a testament to your character that you haven’t been vindictive. I don’t really know the situation but it’s possible she’ll just feel grief looking at your things and wants to avoid that. This is so sad and I’m sorry you’re going through it.
A fancy dinner with a good steak is exactly what I require on my own birthday. There’s nothing better.
This was my experience too. In my case, I assumed since I was fluent in Spanish, had been living in South America and could speak Chilean Spanish and Argentine surely Brazilian Portuguese would be easy, like Italian was for me. Nope. It’s a mashup of all sorts of languages and influenced heavily by African languages as well. It’s beautiful but I had to live with being able to read it and not speak it so well. Absolutely though, if you live there for a bit you’ll catch on.
Overlyboy got a no on the two colleges, though he was admitted to one of the top 5 for aerospace engineering. I’m damn proud.
Right now I’m crammed in some bleachers at a university pool waiting for my daughter’s events to start. We’ve been here since 6:30 for warmups but her heats probably won’t start until 10. Blah. Brought my knittin’ though so the time has gone faster than expected.
