FINALLY after more than a year, our suitcases have new wheels. It took him all of 15 minutes to remove the old ones, and that included gathering the tools he needed. I’ve put the new ones on and the bags roll smoothly and quietly. I also looked at the additional bags we have in the basement - several to choose from. I’m leaning towards the Land’s End garment bag - it should be easy enough to strap it to one of the rolly bags. Certainly easier than a 3rd rolly bag.
Almost my lunch time, so I’ll wait, eat, then head to Food Lion.

Morning, all! It’s currently 59°F and rainy, but the showers should stop in another hour or so and the sun is supposed to come out around lunchtime. At some point it will be sunny and 73, which I’m looking forward to.
I’ve been overweight for nearly my entire adult life, and have therefore never been one to wear white. I did own a pair of white shorts once, which I actually wore every now and then (with a long shirt); I think there was also a time when I decided that an oversized white button-down looked stylish when paired with jeans. I didn’t wear it very often, though, even though it probably looked fine. I have a “fat people don’t look good in white” mental block.
The Lego typewriter was delivered early yesterday afternoon, and by last night I’d gotten through bag 5 of 11 (bags 1-3 in an afternoon build session, and bags 4-5 in another session after dinner). There’s a good chance I’ll finish it today, over 2-3 more build sessions. I don’t expect to have time to post tomorrow or Wednesday, but I’m hoping to share a photo of the finished set on Thursday. Next up will be the Sherlock Holmes and Hogwarts Express book nooks, which should be here by this time next week!
In news that will shock absolutely no one, I skipped the WorldPride concert last night: partly because I’d had something with too much sugar in the late afternoon and I was feeling a little blurfy, and partly in favor of playing with Lego. I have no plans today other than doing laundry, which I won’t start until the rain ends/sun comes out (I have to go outside to get to my laundry room). After this post I’ll likely read until lunchtime, watch a little TV while I eat something, then start the laundry before jumping into today’s first Lego-building session.
A few catch-ups from the last MMP before diving into this week’s:
Ahhh, gotcha. To me it seems odd that they’d offer an incentive for just three additional months (vs six), but whatever works for them.
I don’t do the health comparison thing – Mom’s was always crap, Dad’s has always been alright, and I never had much awareness of my grandparents’ health until they were older – but I do sometimes think about how old my brother and I were when my parents were whatever age I am now. In those terms, I’m a much younger 53 than they were: never married/no kids vs divorced for 10+ years with a 30-year-old and a 28-year-old.
I’ve used deluxe waterproof mattress pads for the past 15 years (Bailey has never peed on the bed but used to sometimes puke there), and because I need them so infrequently I find it much easier to simply replace them vs washing them. I keep a backup in the spare bedroom, and when I need to use it I order another one. The cost is definitely worth the effort it would take to wash one, but if I needed more than one every year or so I could see the tradeoff being different.
I actually could remove the mattress pad at this point, because Bailey hasn’t been able to get up on the bed for quite a while, but whenever I think about doing so it feels wrong…I’ll wait until after she’s gone.
Yeah. The snow, after 33 years has become a bit much. We are moving downhill 6200 feet to an elevation of 5000 feet. Much more manageable.
I can’t spread and grade road base with how wet it is. But, my wife the other day picked up all the dog poo in the yard (it’s nearly impossible to do in the winter). So, my plan is to gather wood, make a big hot fire, gather the dog poo in the bucket of the tractor and burn it. So a dog poo bonfire. It works well (please check with your HOA and county ordinances before you do this )
Those are my Memorial day plans. It’s supposed to snow again though. Get the fire nice and hot and it won’t matter. It always snows on Memorial day up here.
Nope. So dang chilly and gloomy gray here that the city postponed opening the city pools today, the decades long tradition for as long as I can remember. The best we can hope for today is 61 degrees, with “rain all day”. Bah.
I had to put the heavy quilt back on my bed four nights ago. This morning I turned the space heater next to my chair back on, thank goodness I hadn’t put it away yet. I refuse to turn the furnace back on on Memorial Day. Bah again.
It’s a cloudy 72F/22C here, with another round of thunderstorms expected at some point. We had wonderfully rumbly storms all evening and into the night. My lawn guy is supposed to come mow today - he’ll have a wet slog of it if he does, but conditions won’t get better for a while. I normally leave a check under the front mat for him but it’s soaked. I’ll see if he’ll do Venmo (he doesn’t seem to like it) or if he wants me to drop a check at his house later instead.
I will pry myself from the house shortly. I need to find a new makeup brand. The one I had been using changed and now doesn’t cover or wear well. I’ve put it off about as long as I can - my sister’s wedding is in less than 2 weeks! A lot that needs to be wrapped up by then…
And just to make sure they’re as stressed as possible leading up to the wedding, my future BIL is visiting family in Texas and they got hit by a tornado last night. Multiple large trees were uprooted, one of which crushed his truck. Luckily no other major damage other than fences, etc., but dealing with insurance and getting a new truck will not be fun.
NWS sez 88/31 & sunny outside; Webcams show me the beaches are doing quite a business today.
I have many white pants and white + various color patterned shirts. And a white linen suit. Which get worn year round. Our pools are open year round too.
GF is here since yesterday and that’s been fun. One of her posse who lives near here decided to throw a last minute party at her house, so this afternoon I’ll get presented to the rest of her crew, and whatever men some of them are attached to. best of all I’ll actually have time to chat, not just wave hi & goodbye, or try to shout over a band in a bar as it’s mostly been.
Wait, what? This is a thing? ::promptly goes to Amazon to order one before even replying in this thread::
At home I sleep with risers under the head of my bed because I get acid reflux. When I sleep away from home, I’m sleeping flat, and that plus vacation food indulgence results in mucho trouble for me.
I don’t know why I’ve been ignorant of the existence of inflatable wedge pillows until now. Thanks, FCM, for cluing me in. Amazon says I’ll get it tomorrow, which will be in time for our next planned trip.
We had to throw an afghan over the comforter - like you, I didn’t want to turn on the furnace. And it sure is chilly when I step out of the shower every morning. I’ve learned to dry off really fast!!
Our old gutter cleaner had us tape an envelope with a check to the storm door. But we’re way back off the road, so no one would see it. Dunno if that’s an option for you.
Glad to be of help. I’m actually on my second one - the first was kinda cheap and while it got me thru a 4-week cruise, it didn’t last much longer than that. The current one seems to be a bit more substantial.
I scored the root beer for FCD. Once the Aldi in Charlotte Hall opens, I’ll be doing the majority of my grocerying there, since the Food Lion is maybe half a mile from the future Aldi - surely less than a mile anyway.
I need to decide what tonight’s supper will be so I can get it thawing. The chicken teriyaki last night was really good, and we had beef before that. So I guess maybe salmon? Tuna? Shrimp? Shrimp salad? That sounds like a winner. Off to the freezer I go!
And this. Especially around a 7 year grand kidlet, a particularly rambunctious 3 year old one (although that may have been redundant-the ‘rambunctious’ & three year old) and a two month old whose specialty seems to be poop storms on the Richter scale.
Besides the above, I had to wear nurses’s whites from head to toe for so many years that I’m terminally thoroughly sick of white anywhere on me, even if I wasn’t fat or at risk from poop storms. I last wore white shoes under my wedding dress in 1973~size 10 shoes on a woman look like pontoon boats, fat or not.
Its 60, no rain.
Being alone, I decided to walk with my sore toe to the homeless dinner.
A mistake. There was bread, butter, kale, beans, and I am guessing by the color: pork. You wouldn’t know from the taste, as there was none.
At home reading.
It was jumping at the capital, lots of angry Vets today. I had several TV cameras pointed at me but I tried to keep my head down so all they got was my wimple covered head.
Besides the usual undercover guys, I saw a few different ones who had very different vibes. I think the feds have finally landed which isn’t a comforting thought.
A few weeks ago, Hubs asked that I stop smoking weed at the capital so I switched to vaping. Now that the feds have landed, I think I’ll start investigating edibles.
(WV law is weird, I can buy flower, but smoking flower is illegal. Enforcement of that particular law is up to the County Sheriff, some of them are hardasses about it but most of them have bigger worries than a little weed. The big bosses attitude about it influences the beat cops. The Charleston Sheriff doesn’t care and I’ve been openly smoking weed at the capital for months.)
As a general rule, bikers don’t wear a whole lot of white. Harley’s are more reliable then they used to be, but riding is still a rather grimy sport.
Back when I worked for the eye doctors, white was required and I did learn how to wear it with confidence but my skin is so white that it really is not my color.
That’s great, I hope you have a wonderful time! Even when we were into the loud biker bar scene, I never liked having to shout into people’s ears.
Oh gosh, that sounds like just the thing to insure he has a nice relaxing honeymoon. That poor man, I really do feel sorry for him. An out of state act of god sounds like an insurance battle royale.
I can certainly see your point as to your use…we have a rather costly thermal mattress pad that stops the need to pay to heat our waterbed. Modern waterbeds don’t hold as much water as the old ones, but keeping 180 gallons of water at a comfortable temperature 24/7/365 is still expensive.
I’ve put waterproof liners over the thermal pads and we get all sweaty, so washing it will continue to happen. (Even if the fuzzbutts were both wearing claw-caps, he bleeds if he rubs his arm against a door sill.)
I hope you have fun with your Lego session, I’m going to have to guess that I’ll probably stop posting for a few days Saturday morning because the thread trance will take me over when I can see again.
Grrrrr! That would also be nibbling at my brain, how can you possibly know what you have with that system?
I have one white shirt that I wore to a couple of job interviews before I gave up and retired six years ago. Other than that the only white clothes I own are my skivvies and a few pairs of socks.
Unfortunately I live in a city neighborhood where my front door is quite visible. I’ve never had any issues with packages or anything getting stolen, but I also don’t want to tempt luck. But speaking of luck, he happened to show up just before I left to run an errand. I always enjoy chatting with him a bit - he is just one of the kindest, happiest people I’ve ever met and find my own mood boosted for a while afterwards.
And my mall trip got postponed so I am going to hermit as hard as one can hermit for the last afternoon of this holiday weekend. I’ve got two loads of laundry to do but refuse to do anything else. I think I’ll even just have dinner delivered instead of making some dirty dishes!
Yeah that’s already kind of started… My sister is headed down to get him as his insurance company was originally going to arrange for a rental car but has since rescinded that. The company is now saying that the homeowner’s insurance of the relative he was staying with is responsible for the damages instead.
Tell them to read their vehicle policy closely. Unless there are specific exclusions for tornado damage, their comprehensive policy is responsible for making your future BIL right and then litigating the homeowner’s insurance. The homeowners policy won’t pay for a healthy tree falling over, that is an act of god. BIL’s comprehensive auto policy is intended to insure him against random trees falling on his truck.
Hubs and I just had a nice discussion about this - he is a retired auto body repair guy, dealing with insurance companies was part of his job.
We both think that BIL’s insurance company is trying to get out of paying. Out of state claims are a PITA and if they can convince BIL to focus on the homeowner’s insurance, he will go away and stop telling them that they are the ones he paid to fully insure his truck from acts of god.
Surgery is Friday, thanks for asking. I am SO looking forward to this.
Thank you that is excellent information I will pass on. The truck is only ~3 years old but the cab was completely crushed. I’m pretty sure there’s still a car loan on it as well, so he (and the lender) definitely won’t be easily brushed aside.
He has Farmers, not sure what insurance company the homeowner has. Let’s hope it’s also Farmers!
More discussion just happened. It won’t matter what insurance the homeowner has, they will not pay for this.
Your future BIL has an agent who gets a commission on all of the policies BIL has with him.
This happened on a long weekend and it wasn’t an isolated event. All of the insurance people and bodyshops are going to be slammed and nobody has time to deal with an out of state claim.
BIL needs to wait until tomorrow when his insurance agent is in the office and talk to him. BIL’s agent is the only one who cares if BIL is happy. He won’t have a whole lot of power, but he will know BIL’s policy by memory (cause all of the auto comp policies he sells are the same). Once BIL knows for sure who is responsible to make him whole again, he will have a much better idea as to what he should do next.
I made two pancakes, one bacon, and one over-easy egg (double yolk) for Mrs. L.A.'s breakfast. I had two slices of SPAM® on white keto bread (not as good as Sara Lee Delightful Multi-Grain, but I can’t have seeds until Friday afternoon) topped with an over-easy egg.
We watched (and are watching) war movies on TCM. We went to a cemetery in Ferndale to look at graves. CWO2 Wifey says the VA will bury her there free, but it’s not a National Cemetery. I did see some G.I. headstones.
Trash is out, I’ve done an hour’s worth of sorting in the laundry room (this is also my utility room), pretty much finishing it up until I move, dogparked and fixed ham, some stove top stuffing and green beans for supper (starting to pare down the freezer and the pantry).
It’s been a bit frustrating lately with all of the phone calls from the vultures health insurance companies (none of them will give me an answer in writing so I’m going to start looking through agents) and moving companies (same shit..did they all go to school as politicians?). Now I’m going to start calling companies directly and tell them to give me something in writing or !@#$ off.
At least I can get creative in the studio this evening. I’m using some odds and ends die cuts and sentiment strips to make ephemera for cards and scrapbook layouts.
We’re currently watching You Got Mail. Just because I wanted something to fill the void while I was doing other stuff. I’ve been working on sorting through my art stuff that resides on the first floor. I’m not done, but getting closer.
It’s been a cloudy, drizzly coo(61 degrees Ferret Height, 16 Centipedes). Spot and I napped on my bed. He continues to nap on the couch. I made a cup of tea earlier(with nuked water!). I had bought a hard drive docking station from Da Jungle, so I was looking through stuff from saved hard drives from dead computers. I found one of my cartoons I had lost the physical copy of:
Because the shit may hit the fan, if the shit hits the fire.
