Big controversy on Pawley’s Island (near Pawley’s shore). Registered sex offender allowed to work around children at a church (and against the terms of his probation). At least some of the top church officials knew about it and kept it quiet, since of course nobody’s perfect. The pastor’s wife was apparently the guy’s power of attorney for some reason. But somebody at the church refused to be a “good Christian” and went to the press about it. The pastor, his wife, and the head of the school quickly resigned
I learned about it because Facebook decided to show me this post about a planned protest.

Wow, they kept the pastor and his wife in jail overnight, didn’t even get them an immediate hearing so they could be released right away:

I don’t think that’s all that unusual. I watch a number of YouTube videos showing people being arrested and that happens often in them. The most recent I can think of is showing a Texas couple vacationing in Florida who left their infant unattended in a small tent on a very hot beach for almost an hour. They were told they had to spend a night in jail before posting bond the next day, and this arrest happened right in the middle of the day.
That doesn’t seem super unreasonable; you can’t always count on a judge being available immediately. According to this site, some people sit in jail for weeks waiting for a chance to post bond.
And here is a Q&A site where lawyers answer why a person might have to wait weeks before a bond hearing (though this is specifically from a Wisconsin perspective, and it might be different in other jurisdictions):

In that case, they speculate that the person in question might have a parole violation, which changes the rules, and could lead to a person waiting weeks before having a chance to post bond. One lawyer said that probable cause needs to be established within 72 hours or a person can be released, but that’s not the same as a bond hearing, which can take longer to schedule.
But yeah, overnight seems to be pretty typical.

Oh… the poor, poor “church family” is “hurting”… but not one word of sympathy for possible victims.
What they’re having a difficulty putting into words is “we care more about saving our skins than protecting others from harm”.
Tbf I’m reading that as including the victims and their families in the “church family” designation. Which doesn’t mean that they aren’t desperately trying to deflect from the culpability of the church in the first place.
