Onward, Christian Hypocrites!

I was going to title this thread “Jesus Christ sucks donkey dicks”, but I decided that that was TOO inflamitory, and not what I was trying to say anyway. To all you “christians” out there who have jumped down Drain Bead’s throat for her ( aptly titled ) thread Jesus must have been a real dick…, shame on you! You wanna know why the rank and file has trouble stomaching you brand of “salvation”? It’s because most of y’all don’t even follow the rules of what you profess to be your bible. Want some examples? No problem.
Do you keep kosher and follow all the old testament laws? No? Why not?

Matthew 5:17-19
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Offended by DB’s title? Why?

Matthew 5:11-12
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Defending the in-your-face folks who were “witnessing” in the above referenced thread? Why?

Matthew 6:1,5-6
"Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Angry when someone ( like little 'ole me :)) “attacks” your religion? ( actually, I’m not. I’m attacking the way most of y’all “follow” it.) Why?

Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Think I’m just a rabble rousing heathen? Am I, in your eyes, destined to BBQ for eternity? Why?

Matthew 7:1-5
Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
How can you say to your brother, `Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
That’s five examples of Christ’s teachings, not the words of Paul, not the proclamations of the Pope, that I see routinely violated by so-called “christians” when “witnessing” to the masses, and I’m only seven chapters into the New Testament! Please put your own house in order and follow your own rules before you try to sell me on it.

Weird: we all agree that their are a lot of Christian Hypocrites. In several threads re anti-gay bible verses, etc, I have pointed out the same thing, and quoted many of the same verses.

However, Matt5:17 is out of context. "it says “'till all be fulfilled”, which is interpreted as until Christ’s death & ressurection. Ie, until JC died for our sins, you must follow all the Laws. Many other verses confirm this.

Note, that nearly all your verses can be turned about, so those who are attacking those who respond are as bad. Are YOU (& drain bread) not “judging”?

And, true, a “good” Christian should turn the other cheek. However, I’m NOT a “good” Christian. It does not take a Christian to be offended by rudeness. I would be just as offended if the title said Moses, or Mohhammed, or Buddha, or Joseph Smith, or even Brigit. All these religous figures should get our respect, even if their followers DON’T.

Nicely put, weirddave.
It’s not the religion its the people.

Thank you.

I’m trying to think of what this has to do with anything, and coming up blank. It suggests that whether we Christians are supposed to be true to our calling is dependent on whether non-Christians are faithful to our calling, and I know that can’t be right.

Danielinthewolvesden:

Why?

I told you before, I like the way you post.

I wish they would.
If people need to talk about religion, I wish that they could actually have an objective discussion about it. All this witnessing gets on my nerves.

Why do we have to respect religions and religious figures? Frankly, as far as I’m concerned, religions of all kinds enslave the mind. For anyone who values rational thinking, belief in God is as viable as belief in Santa Claus. I’m not sure, but I believe it was Diderot who said humanity will be free when the last general is strangled with the guts of the last priest.
On the other hand, OPs like the one starting this thread do offend people, and I value manners over being right. There have been a lot of Christian-bashing threads started, and it’s really impolite to pick on people for having silly beliefs. If it makes them happy and it doesn’t hurt me, they can sing all the hymns they like.

Does this have anything to do with Randy Newman, or is it just the Sequential Thread Title Fairy striking again? << poof! >>

I dunno, I would view the line ''til all be fulfilled" to mean AFTER the 2nd coming of Christ, And that hasen’t happened yet. Backing this up is the fact that the members of the early church DID follow rabinical law. It was Paul who decreed that that was no longer necessary, in an effort to broaden the popularity of the new religion.( "sounds good. I’ll join your religion…You want me to cut off the tip of my WHAT???. Thanks but no thanks!)

And the saga continues. Good post RTF.

Danielinthewolvesden
What do you mean when you say respect? Why should I respect religious text that says that I am going to burn in hell? Do Christians and other religions respect Other religious texts?

WD: actually it was a meeting of the apostles, incuding Peter, James the Brother of Jesus & Paul, and it occurs in Acts, around Acts15. It is called the Council of Jerusalem, and it occured around AD48. And since it was JC’s chief Apostle(Peter), and his Brother, and most of rest of the Apostles, all of whom knew JC, well, like a brother, I beleive their intrepretation is correct. Not to mention that guy in the Fisherman’s slippers in Rome, with the little white hat, who bases his whole schitck on this. And it is the interpretation of alsmost every Biblical Scholar since. Even Issac Asimov accepts it in his Guide to the Bible.

And, threll, and others: we should respect everyones Religion, even if we do not believe in it, or respect the worshippers. It is just part of Polite society. It is also called Tolerance. Please note the respect I give those SDMBers who are learned in the Talmud, and Jewish Law, despite the fact I am not Jewish. I do disagree with them, and at times, I point out customs/beliefs which are contradictatory, but still in a respectful way. Note, when posting in reply to them, I spell it “G-d”, as to spell out the name is improper in their religion. We could all get along a little better, with some respect for others beliefs.
Try it sometimes.

Friendly Constructive Criticism Time:

Um, Daniel? Just wanna point out that if we’re going to “respect all religions”, we might start by not referring to a major religious leader as “that guy in the Fisherman’s slippers in Rome, with the little white hat,” as someone with a “shtick”.

I’m very uncomfortable with categorizing the Roman Catholic church as “shtick”. I realize we’re in the Pit, and sarcasm and the sardonic approach are the order of the day, but since the rest of your post was saying, “Let’s give religion some respect here,” well…It just seemed a teeny bit inconsistent, is all. Sometimes it IS what you say, not how you say it.

Okay? Ohh-KAY!

OK I see there is no problem with this statement. I respect Wicca, Buddhism, Hindu, Judaism, Christianity / Catholicism.

This is where the problem comes in.
I got this from The American Heritage® Dictionary of the
English Language: Third
Edition. 1996.

I think you see where I’m going with this. There are two ways to cure hypocrisy. 1 to not tell others what to do 2 feel free to tell others what to do as long as you do such yourself.

Folks, that was an attempt to lighten up an otherwise WAY too serious thread. It was not an attack on Catholism, nor the Pope. There was nothing untrue (“ones special trait, interest or study”)or insulting. True, it was informal, but anyone with half a brain could see that it was not serious. I did not call the Pope “a real dick”, as somebody did JC. There was no hypocrisy. The real hypocrisy comes in pretending to be insulted, when one is not. And the Pope does wear “a little white hat, and the shoes of the Fisherman”. The fact I was using him as an example of a religous expert of the 1st order show the respect, not the levity.

But you all know that, were not really insulted, and are just doing this to attack me again. That’s OK, thats what the PIT is for.

While I’m not sure what got your blood a’boilin’ here, ** weird dave ** it would be safe to say, there isn’t anyone who likes ANYONE who is a hypocrite.

If the extra characterization ‘Christian’ is made less meaningful, then it’s that much sadder to see. However, it’s easy to forget that Christians are just * flawed people * especially when they appear less than sensitive to the feelings of others.

As for ‘getting their house in order first’, that isn’t going to happen. All of us are just works in action, don’t you think?? None of us are going to get off this Earth alive, none of us is of intrinsically more or less worth than another.

THAT is why I believe ‘practicing’ my faith is more important than any religion I could ever say I followed. I wish I could say that I also ‘practice’ my faith perfectly, but of course, I don’t. But, focusing on the ‘practice’ keeps me humble and persistent since I’m not meant to perfect it, it isn’t in me to do that.

We are all one.

We all worship or hate the same.

Forgive.

Forget.

Accept.

There is no greater joy in that we are all different.

That is the joy of life.

The joy of being.

There is your view and mine.

And in the end,

there is US.

We are.

Try to change my mind as I try to change yours.

But in the end

Accept,

Rejoice,

in our differences.

Let’s look to our common ground.

In that, there is much for us to stand on.

Best!

Byz

Good to see you, Byzie!!

Ah, the saccarine claptrap of that literary nuisance, free verse. I think I’m gonna puke!

Byz–you are usually pretty cool, but if you decend into free verse again , I’m gonna have to get…sarcastic.

And we wouldn’t want that, now would we?

Of course not.

Now be a good girl, get out your “Collected Works Of William Shakespeare”, and rub your face in the pages until this diseased & unnatural notion that “free verse is profound” passes from your rapidly shriveling frontal lobes. 'Kay? GOODY!

I am totally against people who think that their religion is so “great” that they want to spread their word to the masses. If people want to learn more about another religion, they can go look it up on their own. I don’t appreciate it when people knock on my door asking me if I have found Jesus. I didn’t know he was LOST in the first place. If he was, why did they lose him, and why are they asking me where he is? I am not his keeper! But anyway, I don’t want to go into a rant about how much I don’t like religious persecution involving christians and muslims, etc. It is not my place to tell people how to live, and it’s not anyone’s job to tell me what I should believe in.
