Thanks Swampy, I know she’s a smart kid. Both of my kids are smart. I know I’m blessed. They’re both pretty good kids, stay out of trouble and seem focused on their goals. They seem to have a lot of common sense too; well, most of the time, anyway. They are not afraid to stand up for themselves or for what they believe is right, either.
I hope all this follows them into adulthood.
Well, I’m all cleaned up and purtified. I’m just waiting on my daughter now to call me to pick her up.
I’d go to the store, but I just know I’ll be in the middle of shopping when she calls, so I’ll head to the store after. Then it’s off to the country to visit our friends.
Afternoon, all. I’m home from the MADDope, changed into lazying-about clothes, and have thrown the Kong for Isaac to his satisfaction before it rains, which it looks like it’s going to soon. Fortunately, we had lovely clear sunshine for the garden trip, and it waited to cool off and start raining till after we got home. In other words, the weather cooperated perfectly.
Anyway, it was fun meeting a buncha Dopers I’d not met before. And Ladew Gardens? Is GORGEOUS. I took about a zillion pictures; I’ll put them up later. And then we went out for Italian food and even ended up with extra money to tip our very helpful server instead of being short, like such groups all too often are. Yay for no cheapskates!
Best of all, though? I was able to stroll about the gardens, up and down hill, for two hours, and my new knee hurt no more at the end than it had at the beginning! Yeeeehah, I can WALK again!! Seriously, I have not been able to do something like this trip for several years now without misery and pain, so it’s a MASSIVE relief to know I can start living my life again. We can now start tackling that list of things we’ve been wanting to do since we moved back up to this area but couldn’t, starting with the National Museum of the American Indian on the Mall. Which we’ve been wanting to see since it opened; Papa Tiger’s former boss is a Chippewa, and gave us VIP passes, but we weren’t able to use them.
I’m recaffeinated enough to be awake again (all that fresh air made us all sleepy), so guess I should go back to doing something constructive. Or not.
I got something in the mail to return the canned dog food I buy from Costco. I’ve already got a thread going on it, but I just want to make sure you guys know about your fuzzy-faces too.
I’m home, and here to report that MamaTig’s hair looks really nice! And my mother seemed to have a really nice time meeting all them weird internet people.
After we got back from lunch (I’m still stuffed) she cut my hair and I tried to help her with her computer. Stoopit 28.8 dial up… I got home around 6:30, and now I’m just winding down. All the fresh air and exercise kicked my butt!!
According to my sweetie, it started raining hereabouts early this afternoon. He was not happy - he wanted to work on the boat. Oh well. We need the rain. And tomorrow, we’ll attempt to do some boat stuff. I’ll be running the kiln tomorrow night - I’m just too tired to mess with it today.
Taters, my cousin will have that radiation in isolation treatment too - two rounds of it, after each round of chemo is finished, I think. Thanks to all, too, for the prayers; my uncle is fortunately recouperating, although more slowly than he’d like. But he is cooperating with the recouperation plan, and not trying to do too much, too quickly.
We’re having tacos today in honor of Cinqo de Mayo - the soft kind! I’ve chopped up some onion, tomatoes and even avocado to put on them. That way, we get our veggies too. laughs Right?
Whaddya mean??? Could my doctor stop my Depo??? How old are you? Sorry, but you’re scaring me here. They can pry my Depo from my cold dead fingers!!
I’m sorry for your cramps. I can totally relate.
I’ve been a busy little Rebo today, but I ran out of steam. I washed three loads of clothes, including gross plush dog toys, dog bedding, and dining table chair cushions. I deep cleaned Dad’s study, Dad’s bedrrom, and my bedroom. I don’t think I’ve moved my nightstands in 3 years. I’m talkin’ Harvey-sized dust bunnies, made of dog hair.
And I vacuumed dog hair out of my bathroom, and (mostly) dusted and vacuumed the living room. I’m pooped!
I’m glad y’all had a good time at the MadDope - I wish I could meet all of you guys here in the MMP. One of these days, when I win the lottery…
I bought Dream Girls on DVD the other day. We’re gonna watch it tonight, since last night I watched The Cable Guy with hubby. What a crappy movie.
Ok - off to tend dinner. I’m making stuffed peppers and mashed **N.O.T.**s - with sofrito for gravy. Sofrito is peppers, onions, tomato paste, and garlic sauteed then deglazed with white wine and tomato sauce, then add cream (but I only had milk) and butter. And salt and pepper. Yum. And green beans. From a can!! I like them, so there!!
Good afternoon all, yesterday was crazed, and I am still wonky in the brain, so appropriate noises all around. The one post which stands out is that of Bobbio, which deserves a huge Atta Boy, and I now know who to call on when the hospital nazis are being mean. Really though, good on you for jumping in to help restrain the psycho, standing up for the orderly, and most of all being a good husband. I am glad that the missus is home, and I hope that she is properly medicated and you are being as good a nurse as you are, well, Vunder Bob!
With MamaTigs and swampy all getting their hair chopped off, guess what I did? Yup, the long-ass hair is gone. The first 10 inches are going to Locks of Love, and then my friend (isn’t it great to have a friend who cuts hair?) gave me a very nice cut. It’s still long enough in the back to reach my bra strap, and she put a lot of (long) layers so it moves and a lot of the natural curl is back! I may go back and have her do highlights to offset the silver (maybe it doesn’t show in photos, but believe me it’s there, and the layers really show it off) Skiffman got his cut as well, he had enough to donate to Locks of Love as well, and it’s just past his shoulders, long enough that he can put it in a ponytail but still long enough to look cute. (I like men with long hair and facial hair, can you tell I am a child of the '60’s?)
So now I am making the etoufee recipe that someone (MamaTigs? gave me a while back, so I had better get it started. It’s being an eventful weekend, and there is more to tell, but I have run out of time for the moment.
No etouffée recipe from me, kai, although I do love me some good etouffée! And congrats on the haircut! I was hoping to get enough hair to donate to Locks of Love before I gave in and got it all chopped off – although I’ve not seriously considered cutting it until the last couple of months – but I would have had to probably wait at least another six months to a year, even at the speed my hair grows. I think I was about 2" short. So good on both you and Skiffman for doing the right thing. I wish Locks of Love had been around when I was 19 and got two feet cut off my hair, went from long enough to sit on to barely shoulder length.
I forgot to mention how delightful FCM’s Mom is. I sat next to her at lunch, and really enjoyed visiting with her. And she told me about her experience as a contestant on Jeopardy! back in the Art Fleming days; I watched the show enough back then myself that, who knows, I may have seen her. But alas, like me, she lost on Jeopardy!
Call me a total sap, but I just watched the tearfest special on Barbaro, last year’s Kentucky Derby winner. He was such a beautiful horse! Race horses are such amazing creatures. The great ones just seem to have such joy in what they do.
Did she tell you how much she won? $600 and a set of encyclopedias. In 1970/71, that was a lot of money. She donated the encyclopedias to our school, since we had a shiny new set of Brittanicas. And I think we used part of her winnings to go out to dinner.
How cool. Did I mention how envious I was of all you MADs?
I’ve bought just about all the plants that I’ll need. I’m hoping to do more color this year than last year and stocked up accordingly. Also got some nice perennials to fill in with. Some are baby ones that won’t do much till next year, but were really cheap. I also got some plants to use as ground cover on the side of my house where I’m eventually hoping to stop mulching. Since it rained quite a bit today, I probably won’t get to plant till later in the week, but I’ll get to do a lot of weeding and other plant removal (I’ve got a bunch of stuff to move). I’m all excited that I finally got to go plant shopping. I made it to 4 nurseries plus our plant sale. Won’t even tell you how much the entrance fee was, cuz it’s too embarrassing. But I think the garden has a lot of potential this year. Got some really good deals too.
So I’ve had a very nice day, too.
I’m thinking I’ll crawl into bed and read for a while.
I’m back home. Ya know, no one wants to fest with me. :dubious: Glad the MADfest went well. The last Doper gathering in the Triangle was back in '02. I remember Polycarp, and RTFirefly being there.
Good for the hair donation, kai. I never could stand it long enough to do that.
obligatory drunken post full of love. Scottish Darling and I went to see The Kooks downtown, then got pretty smashed at the bar downstairs and ranted to each other about stupid boys and how they’re stupid and have cooties.
Definitely ready for bed. Hugs and kisses to all, muah!
So, doggio any word on the fire trucks at the gas station? I gathered nuttin’ went KABOOM since you didn’t say.
Good mornin’ y’all! I’m up and caffienatin’. I also have a casserole bakin’. Well, sorta kinda casserole. It’s my grown up version of beanie weenie that I’m takin’ for brunch after church today. I don’t really have a recipe for it cause I just put stuff in it as I go along. Like usin’ little cocktail weenies, canned beans (a combo of canned baked beans and regular ol’ navy beans), some onions and bell pepper, a little brown sugar and a shot of bourbon. Plus a little spicy mustard. I let the beans, brown sugar, mustard and bourbon simmer for a bit. I sautee the onions and peppers. Then I put everything in a casserole dish and let it bake covered about 45 minutes at 325 degrees Amurrkin. Sometimes I add some minced garlic but I think I forgot this time. Anywho, it always turns out good and is usually a hit. Plus it smells really, really, really good! Usually I bake it the night before and nuke it the next day cause like a lot of stuff, it’s better if it sets overnight. However, I forgot to do that last night, hence I am up and cookin’ now.
kai yay for you and Skiffman for donatin’ hair to Locks of Love. I keep my haid buzzed a half inch all over and trimmed up off the ears, so I’d never have enough hair for that. I’ve known several people who have done it though and I think that Locks of Love is a great cause. Just think, some lucky person is gonna have cool kid hair and won’t even know it!
