Overrated! Underrated!

Here’s the idea: 1) The first poster names something, anything, that could be labeled “overrated” or “underrated” by someone else. 2) The next poster responds with “Overrated!” or “Underrated!”, gives their reasoning as to why, and then names their own thing to be judged. 3)Repeat.

(Does this qualify as an SDMB game? It’s my first try. Perhaps it belongs in IMHO.)

I’ll start with:

Cupcakes

Underrated, there are some tasty ones

Conservatives

Underrated. It’s easy to mock them, but impossible to make them go away.

Teenagers

Underrated:

Elvis, The Ramones.

Overrated:

The 60’s.

In play: Teenagers

Overrated. I couldn’t wait to outgrow acne, and be treated as an adult, and I doubt that’s changed.
Barbecue

Underrated.

People know it’s good to eat but it’s thought of as low class. Barbecuing is as sophisticated as any other skilled cooking method.

New one: Canada

Underrated.

Beautiful, peaceful, friendly, big.
New: Alexander Graham Bell

Underrated. So much has stemmed from his work!

New: Peanut Butter.

Underrated. Especially with chocolate. But other nut butters are great too!

Turtles.

Overrated.

Slow. Would lose the next 100 races to the hare. Make lousy pets. Supposedly will bite your private parts in the lake. Constantly getting run over despite their supposedly helpful “shell” protection.

New: Melba Toast

Overrated!

Let’s just call them what they are: crackers

New: Half-Life 2

Underrated. It is possibly the best designed video game ever.
**
Your mom’s cooking.**

Overrated. You’ve obviously never had my mom’s cooking!

Marriage

Underrated. IMHO it’s still the glue that binds society.
Game of Thrones

I guess a lot depends on where and when you grew up, but I’d say that for most people of my generation (or subsequent generations)…

**
“Mom’s Home Cooking” is highly overrated.**

It’s NOT that my Mom was a bad cook, or that I hated what she served me. It’s more that I grew up in the Sixties and Seventies with a lot of prepackaged foods. Oh, I liked it all at the time! I still do. Grilled cheese with Campbell’s tomato soup was a great lunch. Shake and Bake chicken with Kraft macaroni and cheese was a perfectly fine dinner. I’m no food snob.

But my Mom didn’t make anything I can’t make just as well and just as easily myself. So, when a commercial tries to tug at my heartstrings by saying “These cookies are just like the ones Mama used to make,” well, I think to myself “My Mom mostly bought Chips Ahoy, and when she baked cookies, she cut them from pre-made Pillsbury dough.”

My Mom is a wonderful woman who always made perfectly fine dinners and lunches for four kids- she deserves a lot of credit for that. But nothing worth getting misty-eyed or nostalgic over. And most of my contemporaries would say the same.
New topic: The Toyota Prius

Oh, man… beaten to the punch REPEATEDLY!

I’ve never seen Game of Thrones, so I have nothing to add. Sorry (sigh…).

Underrated. Nudity, violence, dragons, and zombies = awesome. And even though it gets good numbers for a premium cable show, there’s a lot of crap on TV that gets much higher ratings.

pie

Underrated. Nothing like a slice of juicy apple pie.

Manhattan (movie by Woody Allen)

Underrated.

I’ll take pie over cake any day.

Scrotums

Plural? Overrated. Don’t get testy.
