Paternally "Lost"

It’s been mentioned in other threads, but it may be important enough to catalog fully. Many (all?) of the characters and situations in the series “Lost” revolve around fathers. Here is my first attempt to details these (in no particular order):

  1. Hurley - Father died after winning the lottery with the evil numbers.
  2. Jack - Father died and he was taking him home on the plane.
  3. Shannon - Father died in the ER due to Jack being preoccupied with Sarah.
  4. Sawyer - Traveled to avenge his father’s suicide.
  5. Jin/Sun - Father was very bad guy, Jin on mission for father to cause him to be on the plane.
  6. Locke - Father stole his kidney - may be involved with loss of use of his legs which led to the walkabout.
  7. Walt - Reunited with father who takes him on plane.
  8. Kate - May have killed father to set off chain of events that led to plane.
Sayid, Claire, Charlie - ??? help me out - maybe to be revealed this season?

All of this is off the top of my head, from memory. Please feel free to correct or expand on the list.

Other than Walt, do any of the characters have living fathers?

Didn’t Claire’s boyfriend make some comment to her about her father? At the time, I took it to mean something along the lines of him hinting that her father had abandoned or abused her or something. It was in the episode where he leaves her.

Interesting thought about them all being fatherless except Walt. And they took him. The last person they took was Alex–who also had a living father, assuming that Danielle’s “love” was Alex’s father.

Wasn’t that his grandfather?

Yup, 'twas.

I haven’t re-watched anything from last season. Would someone be so kind as to elaborate on this point for me?

Thanks,

It’s only speculation at this point about Shannon’s and Kate’s fathers.

Jin seems to have a good relationship with his father after their reconciliation.

Sun’s and Locke’s fathers are also still alive, albeit that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Claire had problems with the father of her child. Charlie had problems with his potential father-in-law.

Sayid seems to be the only one who’s had no father issues.

It’s never been explained what Kate’s original crime was that caused her to be a fugitive. Based on what we have seen, some people, including myself, have speculated that she was being abused by her father/stepfather and killed him.

Thanks. I only vaguely remember something about a hospital and a bank robbery. I didn’t remember anything about a dad.

Hurley’s father died before the lottery thing happened. Maybe that’s what sent him to the nuthouse?

Jin had a bad relationship with his father before his marriage - he was ashamed of his poor family, though they reconciled. But his original plan was to escape to the US and never see his father again.

Okay, recap:

  1. Hurley - Father died before winning the lottery with the evil numbers (reason he was committed?).
  2. Jack - Father died and he was taking him home on the plane.
  3. Shannon - Father died in the ER due to Jack being preoccupied with Sarah (speculation).
  8. Kate - May have killed father to set off chain of events that led to plane (speculation).
Claire - Problems with baby’s father?
Charlie/Sayid - to be revealed this season?

I’m re-watching season 1 on DVD. I’ll add to this if I spot anything else.

Jin’s father is a fisherman and apparently a nice guy. Sun’s father is the bad guy who owns the car company and wants government officials beaten up.

The father originally told Claire he wanted the baby but then decided it was too much responsibility and deserted her.

Jack Sawyer - Father killed in hunting “accident.”

Oh, wait, never mind.

I’m pretty sure that there was talk of Claire’s father abandoning them when she was a child. Her boyfriend (babydaddy) said he wouldn’t do that … then he did.
