I don’t think it matters too much who is on the Republican ticket, because it’s who Putin supports that matters.
I think Mike Pence is political toast at this point. She might do better teamed up with Ron DeSantis. She was on board with the Trump agenda through most of his term. To her great credit, she was too much of a patriot to back the insurrection, but she is still the same very conservative Republican she was before this ordeal. DeSantis is widely seen as the “new and improved” Trump. I’m not sure they are on the same wave length, but if they double-teamed against Trump, they might win over all but his craziest and most loyal followers, while bringing in the conservatives who were never that happy with Trump. Frankly, as a Dem, I’d rather that DeSantis never gets out of Florida. Also, while I admire Cheney for her defense of the Constitution, I am wholly against her ultra-conservative agenda.
They do polling on things like this. Here’s one that was in the field July 15 - 17.
If the 2024 Republican presidential primary were being held today, for whom would you vote?
Donald Trump 53%
Ron DeSantis 23%
Mike Pence 7%
Liz Cheney 2%
I left out a lot of other candidates that appeared in the poll. Full data.
Pence and Cheney are both extremely unpopular among Republican voters and appeal is a necessary ingredient of crossover appeal.
Any hypothetical of Cheney or Pence challenging Trump in the primary or running third party is nonsense in the face of this.
DeSantis is the only one with a chance of challenging Trump and his chances are extremely poor.
