Continuing from my comment in the January 6th thread. What are the chance of the two of them running in 2024 and then becoming running mates? Are they politically compatible? Might the time be right for true conservatives to make a comeback and reclaim the party?
From other thread: After last night I can see this whole committee being a launching point for the Republicans to have a Pence and Cheney ticket to challenge the MAGA factions. Pence can clearly show that he respects the office and is a responsible man that true (old school) republicans can trust, one that can bring the economy back from the brink. Cheney has shown that she is a national force to be reckoned with and since she has no chance of being reelected in Wyoming she might as well make a run for president. Just by the nature of their grievances with Trump they can effectively knock him out of the race (just show some outtakes of Trump being a snake).
Then they can turn their attention to whoever takes up the MAGA mantel and question their sanity of following in his footsteps. What did you do on 1/6 and after to defend democracy? It would split the party wide open, but if played right they could reunite it. That’s a fear worthy of another thread
I can’t see Pence doing well. He’s too tied to the Christian Fundamentalist Right to appeal to centrists, and his name is mud to those same far right folks because of his failure to oppose Biden’s confirmation. He’s somewhat universally disliked by everyone for one thing or another at this point.
I think Cheney could make a good running mate for a potential traditional conservative candidate, I just don’t know who that might be at this point.
Not yet. The party probably needs to hit rock bottom in terms of influence and power, before there can be any real attempt to right the ship.
It might be fun to see a Liz Cheney/John Kasich ticket, but in order to get enough support from within the party, it would be necessary to pander to sleazy right-wing elements. We saw this with Bob Dole and John McCain when they headed GOP tickets. It looked promising at first, then they started playing footsie with Oliver North and Sarah Palin, respectively.
Or they could appeal to centralist Dems who are not happy with Joe and the economy. It could be time for a realignment of both parties since neither stands for jack shit anymore or doesn’t know how to effectively play politics.
I like John Kasich as well. And so did Trump, he asked him to be VP before Pence and Kasich turned him down.
It’s an interesting prospect and I hope it comes to fruition, for a couple of reasons: a) it would create a massive schism in the Republican party, which would ease the pathway to office for Democratic candidates across the country, and b) I would go to one of their campaign events just to shout “Hang Donald Trump!”.
I can definitely see them both running and standing on a debate stage with Trump. His playbook is well known now and they can effectively counter it with facts from the 1/6 committee. Trump would melt down like the wicked witch getting drenched with water.
Whether or not they would be able to team up is questionable, but at that point who cares. What passes for the republican party would be split.
No one supports Pence
He’s too much in Trump’s pocket for Cheney and the anti-Trumpers.
The MAGAs will never go for him since “He screwed over Trump on January 6th.”
If he had come clean and testified, he’d at least get the anti-Trump vote.
Kasich is the kind of Republican I’d like to see more of. I mean, I disagree with him on almost every political issue, but our disagreements don’t go beyond politics. I don’t disagree with him on the fundamentals, like “leaders should try to do what’s best for their people”. Man, I miss the days when we were able to take things like that for granted.
But realistically, I don’t think him running would make any difference, or would even hurt. There’s no chance at all of him winning the Republican nomination. And even if he peels off the sane Republicans, there are a negligible number of those. Most folks who would be willing to vote for him are folks who would otherwise vote for the Democrat.
WTH? Cheney is one of the most conservative Republicans in the House, and formally #3 in the House Republican leadership. Her only sin in the party is not supporting an incompetent, immoral, and dangerous buffoon when he crossed into sedition territory.
Liz Cheney is done with the GOP. She is up to lose the upcoming primary in Wyoming Aug. 16, very badly, to another Republican and will no longer have a spot in the House after the fall election. It is all but certain.
This is an official warning for attempting to hijack yet another thread to discuss Liz Cheney’s bona fides as a Republican.
You have done this many times in P&E threads and have been mod-noted for it several times. I encourage you to pay heed on what you are posting to make sure you are discussing the actual topic of a thread and not simply attempting to derail the main thrust of the discussion.
Agreed, I was pissed when he was elected governor, and I strongly disliked most of his policies. The Chamber of Commerce didn’t like some either (specifically sales tax on services).
But now I look at him fondly, as one of the few Republicans that I actually think has any reason to be within miles of a political office.
It’s weird how you miss the beatings when the stabbing start.
While she may end up there I think she would dearly love to continue to be a pain in Trumps rump by making a run for 2024 just so she can raise money and continue to poke at him. Her status in Wyoming may have fallen but I believe she has enough national attention now to seriously draw enough funding for a run, even if some of it is from the Dems. Hell, I’ll buy her book when it comes out, might even read it.
That and she doesn’t have anything else lined up after 2022. A run would be a bully pulpit to strike out at MAGA’s and remain politically relevant. It’s what dad would want her to do.
No way. Neither really has a political future. The Christian Right loves Pence but I don’t think Liz is their cup of tea. The MAGA Right hates them both. The few moderate Republicans left and business types might support them in their crushing loss to whoever the Democratic nominee is. With that ticket, I think even Texas might finally turn blue.
I see no reason not to link in another thread on the topic:
From post #36 from this thread:
Then later:
If Trump was cleaver enough (which means by way too much) to announce a Trump/Palin ticket from the start of the primary season, it will give him much to talk about: “We are an experienced team ready to finish what I started eight years ago”. But what might really drive him would be-- Look at what the ratings will be!! We will own the air waves again, we will own the radio waves, our rallies will be enormous, she is still pretty hot for an old broad, and the unspoken and unacknowledged reason- our lack of knowledge and sophistication is our greatest feature, the base knows it and love us!!!
If that ticket gains some early momentum (but I am sure our very mature press corp will ignore the dog and pony show to cover meetings about land use by the Interior Department instead, right?) DeSantis may contact Noem and the two of them may say “who better to fight fire with fire?!?!?” There is little or no Republican infrastructure, and McConnell, Graham, and Rubio will not even try to stop either train wreck (Cruz will because he believes he still has a shot).
I would love to see months and months of a Trump/Palin vs. DeSantis/Noem flame war. “We have both been chief executives.” “Yea, well so have we!” “Our states both voted Republican, you both lost your elections!” “You bastard! I MADE you! You begged for my endorsement!” We passed education bills and outlawed CRT!!" “I secured the border – and I am going to do it again!!”
If I believed in a supreme being I would pray for this scenario every day! The Republican base (even the country club set I was depressed to learn recently) is pretty simple minded and completely devoid of the ability to think for themselves. They need to be led, that is why they are sheep – and if Hannity and Carlson come out on opposite sides (they won’t because Rupert Murdoch tells them what their opinions are), if Steve Bannon and Dinesh D’Sousa contradict each other . . . This hypothetical situation which is far too good to hope for, could drag on for months.
It seems that a three way race with prearranged tickets would be a great boon for Democracy as the Republicans would be so very busy attacking and assassinating each other. There could even be chants of “Hang Mike Pence” at presidential rallies if these candidates would team up and run together.
Plus, this is sort of the era of the group of superheros, there is no longer any solo heroes. Even if there are not other superheros, there are multiple versions of the one primary superhero (Spider-Man for example). For goodness sake, there is a female version of Thor in the new movie-- now is the perfect time for picking ones running mate BEFORE the race starts instead of picking one of the losers who had to drop out early. Popular culture has given us an example and several of us came up potential tickets independent of each other.
The Battle Royale:
~ Trump/Palin vs.
~ Pence/Cheney vs.
~ DeSantis/Noem
Keep your guard up, protect yourself at all times. When I say “Break!” go to a neutral corner, let’s have a clean match.
Ding! Ding!
