There are lots of people in this world who just don’t question the beliefs and value systems they were were raised with, in spite of all their exposure to more reasonable stuff. They are more interested in comfort than in the (possibly uncomfortable) truth.
To be clear, this is not an excuse for anything. Anyone who doesn’t, and who doesn’t want to, think for themselves, is scarcely human in my book.
I participated in the old Pit thread, and I agree that it is somewhat ambiguous how many of his offensive gaffes are due to stupidity, and how many are due to maliciousness. And I’m also not certain how much it matters.
He literally says the same shit you did, that whether someone is racist due stupidity or malice is “a distinction without a difference.” You even used the same fucking words. Yet, for some reason, when the black guy says it, he’s an asshole.
So, um, psst. Your racism is showing.

I get what you’re saying, but I think people who are acting from ignorance usually get more flack if they’re willing to learn and educate themselves. Plenty of people are raised by total bigoted fuckwads, but they end up changing, going out and questioning what they were taught. It’s like, “wait a minute, this isn’t right.”

If I meet a teenage racist, then I have significant hopes of them overcoming their upbringing. As they get into their late 20’s, that hope dwindles rapidly.
If someone is in their 40’s or later, that’s pretty much who they are, and while it is possible for them to change, it’s pretty unlikely, IME.

I agree it’s a fine line. Acey was indeed looking like an advocate for Putin, which seems to be skirting the line of making the thread political. But your calling him out on it also looks political, especially as he’s not extremely blatant. It’s sort of a no-win thing.
Since this is a Pit, I feel no qualms in saying that it’s because he’s either a dumbass, or doing a very credible job of impersonating one.
We can play: troll or dumbass? He comes running in here spitting out Faux News takes and then pretends he knew all along they were bad takes. I lean towards dumbass. I think he tends to believe the last thing that someone has told him.

Aceplace57 came out as more terminally dense than trollish. And, for the record, after many, many posters pointed out that he’d been jerkish in his assumptions, he seemed to acknowledge that yeah, he had gone a step too far. Post 54 above was a pretty solid apology.
So I’d describe said poster as quick to judge, argumentative ( and far too fond of using their own definitions which is often trollish), but not beyond redemption.
Buuuuut (and it’s big), this is in a non-political, non-racially charged subject - where based on comments from other posters upthread, they seem to be able to keep their act together better.
He often apologizes, proclaims that he has learned something, and promises to do better next time.
And then next thread, it’s the exact same act. I’ll hold off on the praise for his heartfelt apology.
Whatever he is, he is tiresome way too often. In the Ukraine threads it is hard to just ignore his usual level of aceplaceness.
Again, wasn’t willing to read through all the previously posted threads, but the snippets did NOT generate much sympathy for Ace. At best, I’m damning with faint praise, because there are other posters here in the Pit who won’t even go as far as a single apology. Thus my feeling that perhaps they’re capable of learning, but until they get to the critical stage of thinking prior to posting opinions as facts they’re not going to earn any admiration.
