Poetry in Motion - Today's MMP

I think they’re beginning to think they don’t want me to leave! No, I’m not leaving the country, I’ll just be at the top of the hill rather than down here at the bottom end of campus.

Sadly the new person can’t call with questions because there isn’t a new person. In fact there’s not likely to be a new person in this job for at least three months unless they get a temp in to do it. And a temp is likely to be utterly clueless about how the uni works so I’m having to write very basic level instructions for everything I do.

Much as I don’t care about leaving Tin Knickers in the doo-doo, I feel very bad about leaving the job totally unscripted so that a poor unsuspecting temp gets thrown in at the deep end.

I’ve just had a chat with the lady I interviewed with for the new job and she’s already apologising profusely for taking Monday off (her little boy’s off to camp for the first time and she’s being proud worried mum) but I do at least know that there’s been a temp doing the job for a while and I will have four days with her until her contract ends on 31st July.

The humidity is gross around here too, but thankfully it’s started to rain a bit so hopefully tomorrow won’t be so bad.

No problem, Prof, always glad to be around for drunkenness.

Morning all. We’re having gorgeous, non-humid weather here. It’s wonderful. I just thought I’d gloat a bit. :stuck_out_tongue:

For everyone who remembers how much I’ve complained about the forecast in the past, it’s that time again, but I think we (the forecast manager who started shortly after I did 2 years ago and I) have made enough improvements to the process that it’s almost painless! I’m so proud! My part of the process also went from taking about a month and a half - for two people working on it - down to a few days. That makes me really feel good!

I know the people who did this stuff before the current forecast manager and I came in '06 built it from nothing, under pressure and deadlines… but they had 3 1/2 years (or 6 forecasts) to improve the process and fix stuff before we came along. Why was it still suck a f’ing mess? Blurgh. At least it’s better now!

I’ve biked in to work 3 times this week (drove in Mon morning 'cause it was raining but biked back from lunch), which is pretty good for me. I only live 3/4 mile away, but they keep saying “chances of rain” in the forecast and… well, I’m just too much of a wimp to ride in the rain. You’re far more committed to the biking thing that I am, mika!

Evening all. Well, it’s now 6:30pm, the sun has just set and the temperature is down to 95°F/35°C, although the heat index is still 134°F/56°C, 'cause the humidity is 80%. It’s not normally this humid here in summer. Og only knows what August will be like! The trade-off though is that winter is very nice, usually, with temperatures rarely below 50°F/10°C (thatnk Og, since nothing is insulated and we have no central heating).

And to add insult to injury, I think HRH is coming down with a head-cold. We were about due for one, since she hasn’t been sick in, like, forever (the temperatures probably have something to do with it, going from obscence heat outside, to cool AC inside). I hope this one passes quickly.

How about a poem or two for today?

First, a sad one:

  1. As you can never put a shot in a broken glass
Someone who is sick from love can never rest
Before you broke my heart you should have thought
This broken heart is no use to anyone

1. Toote hue pemane me kabhi jam nahi aata
Ishq ke rogi ko kabhi araam nahi aata
Dil todne se pehele soch liya hota
Ye tota hua dil kisi ki kaam nahi aata

This is kind of a jokey one:

  1. He does it in the morning, he does it in the night
But he doesn’t do anything wrong!
    He says his lover’s name

2. Subha leta hai shaam leta hai
Koi bura kaam nahi karta hai
Apne mehboob ka naam leta hai

Heartsick:

  1. There is a fire in my heart
    A pain as well
    When the whole world sleeps
    My poor heart weeps

3. Ek aag si dil me hoti hai
Ek dard sa dil me hota hai
Jab sara aalam sota hai
Tho dil bechara rota hai

Good morning everyone.

You’ve all been a chatty and drunk bunch in my absence!

Well, my rig is still in the shop and not likely to be done until late today. Sigh…

As it turns out the window switches in both the driver’s side and passenger side were shot. Additionally, my right front axle was leaking. The good news is that my warranty covers EVERYTHING. The bad news is my boss was not pleased that I’m missing yet another day of work.

**rigs, ** I’m with you on the whole working mom thing. I felt (and still feel) incredibly bad that I had to work while my kids were little. But, like you, I need the money.

I’ll try to pop in later, but I have to go take care of something.

Mornin’.

The weather lately has been all rain/sun/thunder/rain/sun, which wreaks havoc on my head (I’m prone to migraines). My brain kinda feels like someone’s used it to clean off the bottom of their shoes. I’d almost be happy to trade it in for 55C. Almost.

At least it’s slightly less crazy at work today. Phew. Now if only the boss would stop giving me instructions and changing his mind when I’m halfway through the task, that would be super-awesome.

LiLi, what’s so bad about Jazz Fest? (OK, fine… I lock myself up in the house and refuse to step outside when Taste of the Danforth rolls around, so I know what you mean)

Also, I second the motion for cherry pie. Mmmmm. Too bad you’re off dairy, though, because my favouritest use for sweet cherries is a cherry clafouti (but that uses lots of milk, since it’s more or less baked crepe batter with fruit).

Personally, I’m holding out for the sour cherries, since we just used up the last container of the sour cherry freezer jam I made last summer.

Y’all can have the cherry pie. More for you… Better hide the cherries while they are still raw, though.

Okay, lunch time, and I’m having the first of the packaged pho I bought.

Today it’s Long Kow’s Crystal Noodle spicy sesame paste. (Hee hee. Long kow. Moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooof.)

Anyway. It’s nea, packaged with a clear rice noodle nest at the bottom, a packet of soup mix, and a smaller packet of sesame paste.

The soup mix packet is actually in brick form, and you place it on top of the noodles as you add the boiling water. It softens up and apparently inside the brick is where the nice leafy bok choy was hiding. While it’s steeping you knead the packet of sesame paste, which seems to start off like putty but turns liquid as you knead. Freaky. Then you add it to the soup.

Once ready, it looks good. Reddish with sesame seeds floating and the definite aroma of sesame. The noodles are totally clear, almost gelatinous-looking – it’s almost disturbing, though I can’t put my finger on why. The soup tastes quite nice though. It’s not particularly spicy, though there’s a bite to it. I’m surprised how well the sesame flavour melds into the soup. It’s now overpowering but gives it a really nice flavour.

Definitely a winner.

Hi. Thunderstormy out.

Just having a quiet, introspective day.

Might need to drink again.

MMMMM… Cherries Jubilee… My favorite of all desserts set on fire.

Afternoon Y’all! I’m takin’ a lunch break. I’ve been a busy and productive bear. So far I haven’t had any really painful, mumbly voice apps to muddle through. May the rest of the pile be as good.

It’s cloudy today, which is good cause it’s keepin’ temps down to the mid to high 80’s which is practically winterish for July down here. It has rained off and on all mornin’ but no big down pours.

Heh… you know you spend waaaaaaaaay too much time dopin’ when, first, I get all excited cause Rebo pmed me about the new feud thread and second when three of my answers in said feud thread are doper names.

Ok, sammich time then back to the pile.

Later Y’all!

Skim, run, l8r g8rs!

Beautiful weather here. Too bad I have to work 1-10 today. Would be the perfect day for a bike ride.

Hey has anyone heard form CutiePie lately? I noticed she hasn’t been posting in the MMP, unless I missed in my skimming.

This has been a horrible, awful, terrible, no good, very bad day.

OK, maybe that was a little melodramatic, but geez. I have had nothing but problems today. As soon as one thing is half way resolved, another thing pops up. Ugh.

Is it Firday yet???

Oh, I’m getting sour cherries, too, I just know what to do with those. And I love clafoutis, too. This is a conversation I’ll be having with the doctor this afternoon, “So, exactly how much dairy can I eat if I’m off dairy?”
I know how to cook with the sour ones, but not the sweet ones. Cherries jubilee, sweet cherry-lime granita, maybe. What else? If I made pie I doubt Mr. Lissar would eat it.
It’s okay here, but humid. Not hot, though.
rigs, I agree. I do not want to go back to work. We’re crunching numbers right now to see if we can afford for me to stay home.

Ergh. We got accosted by the damn Universal Power guys last night. They buzz random people in the building, get let in, and wander around trying to get your to let them see your power bills and personal info. Mr. Lissar tossed them out. A month ago, he had a gang of four trying to intimidate him, and they didn’t clear off until he called the cops.

Lunch time here. I had some leftover Asian(ish… not authentic by any stretch) pork noodles. They’re goooooooood!

Yeah, we haven’t see **Pie **this week. If you’re lurking, {{{Pie}}}

Corporate Jehovah’s Witnesses?

LiLi is off dairy? Huh? I was only gone a few days – what happened?

Good thoughts still going out to the SoapyParents!

I was lucky in that I fell into this job, working at home, when Young Tiger was only 15 months old, so I was able to be a working mom from home. I really had the best of both worlds. I feel for you moms who had to go to work; it’s a real struggle, isn’t it, balancing work and kids? It’s not always easy even when you’re at home. Especially because when I was doing it, it was pretty unusual, and so many people didn’t understand that when I said I worked at home, I meant I earned money at home, and so thought I was free all the time to do PTA/Girl Scouts/you name it. Which wasn’t the case – I still had deadlines to meet and such. But it did give me a lot more flexibility than I would have had in an office. Anyway, I don’t have to worry about that any more; these days telecommuting is so common that nobody’s surprised.

I was basically useless yesterday, and I’m not doing a whole lot better today, but at least my foot and leg aren’t aching as much as they were while we were gone. Alas, all the walking around the pow wow grounds, especially up and down the hill to Ex-Boss’s relatives’ campsite, not to mention around all the vendors on a frequent basis to see what other amazing bargains I could find, definitely did my bad foot in. I took enough drugs to still function, but now that I’m home and cutting back to normal dosages, I’m really feeling it. Oh well, at least it’s starting to calm down. And I found some gorgeous jewelry at truly stunning prices, so it was worth the pain!

I really should shut up and get some work done. Which I really didn’t get done yesterday in spite of the pile that’s sitting here. And I’m not getting done today because every time I try, the phone rings or the dogs need out or something else that destroys the infinitesimal amount of concentration I’ve been able to summon up. Oy.

It’s a power company with very shady business tactics, like going door-to-door and telling people they’re a subsidiary of the people’s power company, asking to see their bills, and signing them up for switchover. They trespass and bully. They’re bastards.

Why are all the Google ads in regards to carpet cleaning and stain removers for pets? Do they know something I don’t know? Gulp.

It just occurred to me that sweet cherries would probably make a yummy salsa and/or chutney type topping for pork, for those who aren’t weirded out by fruit and meat combos… which would be me. I’ll have to experiment with that tomorrow, methinks.
