In an earlier thread, people created a list of movies that were known for famous scenes but few people have actually seen in their entirety. Lets see which ones people on the Dope have seen.
Check any films that you’ve seen from start to finish, and not just for the famous scene (in parentheses).
I watched Triumph of the Will in university, along with Olympia - doing a film course, which included a section on propaganda. Riefenstahl was a hell of a film maker…it’s really too bad she directed it toward making propaganda for a vile regime.
I thought people were still adding movies/scenes to the earlier thread linked in the OP. I thought it was still going. That being said, I counted 25 of the movies in the poll that I’ve seen all the way through.
By my count I’ve seen 18 of these: Trip to the Moon, Citizen Kane, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gone with the Wind, It Happened One Night, Metropolis, Network, On the Waterfront, Some Like It Hot, Taxi Driver, The Gold Rush, The Great Dictator, The Seventh Seal, The Shining, Un Chien Andalou, and When Harry Met Sally.
I’ve only seen 7 of them.
Of those 7 I’ve only liked 2, Citizen Kane and Network. Patton and And Justice for All were mediocre but decent. The Shining and Taxi Driver were long, pointless, and without any interesting character motivations or development. As was The Deer Hunter which Taxi Driver always reminds me of and also seems like it could have been on the list for the Russian roulette scenes. Some Like it Hot remains the only Jack Lemmon movie I’ve seen that I didn’t like. And When Harry Met Sally was so dull that despite that I’m fairly certain I’ve seen it twice the referenced scene is the only thing I remember about it. And that likely only because I’ve seen it parodied so often.
Quite a few more I’ve tried to watch but got so bored so quickly I gave up. A Streetcar Named Desire, Braveheart, Casablanca, Freaks, Gone With the Wind, On the Water Front, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
The only reason I’ve even seen that many is about a year ago I made a list of as many movies I could think of that I hadn’t seen but had seen referenced, parodied, or talked about a lot and tried to watch though them.
Most of the rest of the movies on this poll that I haven’t seen or tried to watch I’m not even familiar with the famous scene and or have never even heard of.
