Forgive me, honorable RickJay, but what the heck is Oep’s Law? My google-fu yields nothing.
Out of curiosity, what is the worst / most combative / least gracious concession speech so far?
Have there been any cases of people spitting the dummy? (if not presidential, then how about congressional)
Nixon in 1962 was pretty damned ungracious. Comically so.
That’s kind of cheating ;cause it’s not a Presidential election, but boy, you nailed it.
Incidentally, Oep’s Law is simply the reverse of Poe’s Law; there’s no parody of liberal bitterness over election results too crazy to not sound like the real thing.
“I have just been informed by my staff that women and black people can now vote. I wish somebody had told me this a year ago.”
Okay, seriously, I think Romney will be gracious in defeat and will speak well of Obama if he wins (and whatever he says, I predict some people on this board will say it wasn’t enough). I’ve said all along that I believe Mitt Romney is a good person. I just don’t think he’s the best choice for President.
Umm, wouldn’t that be Eop’s Law? You’re going to have to order new t-shirts.
Mitt will make a gracious and moving concession speech and people will say how if this Mitt had shown up he might have won. Isn’t that how it usually works?
I’d imagine that they will be gracious. Hopefully they’ll be thanking everyone who helped Romney become the 45th President.
That was well put. I don’t agree that he isn’t the right choice but otherwise a good comment.
He’ll move to Utah and put a couple of extra wings on his home.
I think Mitt Romney like John McCain are decent men. They would both make reasonably good presidents. Romney will be as gracious as McCain. The problem is that their party is a fucking abomination. I never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate before Kerry and I was really voting against Bush than for Kerry. I could see myself voting for a Republican again once they take the keys away from the Tea Party types.
Okay, but what does that have to do with assuming Romney will be a gracious loser? And why exactly do you assume that the negative reaction will be bitterness and not anger?
And of course Mitt will sound all nice publicly. The question is, what will he feel privately? My guess is that he’s already doing his best to cope with the fact that he is most likely to lose, and he’ll be numb for a few days. And I agree that Ann will breathe a sigh of relief since she already thinks being a candidate’s wife is hard.
Barack, if he were to lose, will likely be more upset. I picture him irrationally feeling like he was let down. I picture Michelle having to comfort him. He’s someone I think might actually become bitter and cynical.
I just hope that in the Obama Victory Headquarters, they put the feed of Mitt’s concession speech on delay.
And that President Obama, right before cuing it up, says: “Proceed, Governor.”

In the case of defeat, Obama will happily return to teaching and pocketing some generous speaking fees.
Romney has burned all of his political bridges with both Progressives and Conservatives. Difficult for him to admit defeat and call for National unity after spending four years trashing the institutions of our government. Maybe he and GW Bush can team up and go fishing, otherwise Ann will have to put up with having him around the house.
Crane
Don’t you worry about Mitt. He’ll be serving on several boards, surrounded by people sucking up to him and telling him daily how smart and terrific and nice smelling he is. Folks will be hanging on his every word, and nobody near him will ever question his judgement again (within earshot).
Or he can always console himself with his many millions of dollars. The very rich are not like you and I.
If you include candidates’ spouses, you’ve got a contender in 1980. In his concession speech, President Carter said, ‘I’m not bitter. Rosalynn is, but I’m not.’ At which point, Rosalynn Carter added, ‘I’m bitter enough for all of us.’
Mitt is no more impressive than Donald Trump and the only advantage he had over Trump was his credibility.
Trump has more money, more wives, more hair…
And Trump is fucking losing it.
“Big man in a presidential campaign. Take that away and what are you?”
“A genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.”
Hmm, a Republican presidential campaign basically blaming God for an electoral defeat?
That’s funnier than anything SNL’s come up with.
