Ugh, Kenley is super obnoxious. Laughing at people on the runway? So not cool. And then she gets all bent out of shape whenever anyone dares to suggest she’s less than a stellar human being? Apparently Tim tells her off next ep. Yay!
All in all, I thought the challenge was…very meh. Felt like they were trying too hard to manufacture drama by having the moms there, too. I hope they do something more interesting next time, because this one was a real snoozer.
I loved the way her Mini-Me was laughing, too. But as much as I loved her early in the season, and as much as I like her style, I can’t defend her anymore. I wonder if they needed a bit of a villain so they started making her look worse in the edits.
I didn’t think Leanne or even Suede’s looks were that bad. The only one I didn’t like was Joe’s.
I thought Kenley was definitely really obnoxious. And as cute as the 40s and 50s style dresses are, if that’s all she can do then there’s no reason for her to be there anymore. She designs what she wants to design and never mind the actual challenge. I think the only reason she didn’t get called out on it this week was because her client has her same style. (Though I’m glad they did at least notice that Kenley basically just turned her into a Mini-Kenley.)
I wasn’t a fan of Leanne’s jacket but her dress was super cute and she should have got more credit for it.
Joe’s suit was just awful. Terrible. And it didn’t even look like it fit her well at all. Her boobs looked droopy and the suit looked badly tailored. He definitely should’ve been the one to go.
I didn’t like Suede’s jacket but the dress was cute.
With Jerrell getting a second win I think he’s starting to look like the best contender for the number 3 slot after Leanne and Korto.
I thought so, too, but I just feel like it will be Kenley from the editing. She’s kind of the designated one everyone loves to hate. Kind of like Wendy Pepper from season one.
Kenley is super obnoxious, but I really do like the stuff she creates. Among the designers who showed at fashion week (and this isn’t a spoiler; all of the designers following Terri’s elimination showed collections), I liked hers best.
What Joe made was absolutely horrendous, and he got the kiss of death “phone call home to family” edit besides.
That said, I wouldn’t have been too broken up had they decided to do another double-elimination and got rid of Suade as well.
The previews are making it seem like Kenley is going to pitch a fit on the runway next week, but who knows if that’ll send her home or not. Santino got uppity on occasion as well, and his work kept him around.
For a while I was terrified that Leanne being saddled with that horrible mother was going to be her downfall and we were going to wind up with another Alison/Vincent scenario.
Joe’s outfit was horrid. Just a disaster. Kenley is getting on my last nerve, and I didn’t really like the vest thing over her garment. She looked ticked off that Jerrell got the win - I know she was mentally popping the champagne. I hope she gets her comeuppance next week. Jerrell was great. Suede working around his model to get her to accept a dress was good, although I was meh about the dress. And he’s still talking about himself in the third person. I actually liked Leanne’s jacket. I thought it was cute.
They had the “text to vote for your favorite designer” and I realized that there’s no one I like this season. Not their looks or their personalities. Some I dislike, some I don’t care about one way or the other, but I’m not rooting for anyone.
Suede’s jacket was atrocious. I couldn’t see how that piece of garbage related to the dress at all. Oh, and I’ve never seen a photographer out on a shoot in an outfit like that. Just horrid, all around.
Kenley is grating on my last nerve, but I did get a kick out of her and mini-me giggling in unison during judging. The mother of Kenley’s client reminded me of Harvey Fierstein in Hairspray. Put down the Marlboro Reds.
I guess I’m the only one who didn’t like Korto’s outfit? She said she was trying to relate the jacket and dress, but I don’t see that she did. The jacket was nice, but I didn’t like that green print at all. Overall I like her designs.
I don’t like Kenley much either. She never listens to Tim, I don’t know why he wastes his time talking to her.
I think Jerell will win with Leanne second and Korto third.
I loved Jerrell’s outfit and need the jacket NOW. Apparently his model was to wear the feather hat Jerrell was sporting the day of the runway show. I think his headgear is terrific. I started out liking him, went “meh,” now I want him to show at Bryant Park. And how down to earth was he about his first job? “I worked at McDonald’s, had a lot of Hot and Tasties, and got bad skin from standing over the fryer” HEE.
Kenley is a spoiled brat who is ignoring the cardinal rule of PR: Tim Gunn is always right. However, she’s the most drama on the show (that in itself is pretty lame) and will therefore stay (my prediction only–I know nothing about the outcome).
Mahna thinks Suede needs to get the boot. Suede may be a reasonably good designer (and yes, the outfit was rather cute) but Mahna can’t stand watching Suede much longer without throwing something at the TV.
Once Suede is gone, we can start working on Kenley. Besides the fact that she’s annoying as hell and full of herself, she really is a one-trick pony when it comes to designs (and not a very interesting trick at that).
Tim Gunn mentions in his blog that he didn’t feel as though Korto’s look came together, either.
And actually, I have to disagree with peedin. Tim quite frequently disagrees with the judges and always mentions it in his blog when he does. I can’t recall of the top of my head any advice that he gave a designer that the judges specifically disliked, but he has given his enthusiastic approval to garments that the judges ripped to shreds on the runway. Alison’s paper dress in season 3 that sent her home comes to mind; Tim raved about the dress in his podcast and was stunned when the judges booted her.
Obviously Kenley is being bratty and immature in response to Tim’s criticism rather than accepting it graciously, considering it, and then discarding it, but she’s not necessarily wrong to not do what Tim suggests.
What I found interesting was her reaction to Tim’s suggestion of leveling the hem of the tulle with the hem of the dress. In her talking head segment she poo-poo’d his advice on this, but what she sent down the runway was suspiciously lacking in tulle length.
It would be interesting to see more of differences in opinion–between the judges themselves, between Tim and the judges…it all seems kind of uniform now. I know they edit a lot, and it has seemed of late that Heidi has disagreed a bit (she didn’t like Kenley’s dress in one show, where the others really seemed into it), but I’d like to see way more.
Agree that no one really is my favorite. In terms of personalities, Stella was funny. And Jerell is also very sweet–can see him winning fan fave. But no one that I’m totally into.
An interesting comparison is with TOP DESIGN, which we just started watching. The Tim-like person there is actually helpful – he usually comes in fairly early, and gives useful suggestions.
I agree that Todd Oldham is extremely helpful to the Top Design crew (he flat-out recommends actual techniques, color pallattes, etc), but I think it’s unfair to paint Tim Gunn as unhelpful. He doesn’t always know what the judges think about something, but he’s given mountains of useful advice to various designers, and his not liking something is usually a pretty good sign that something’s not right.
Not, like I said, always, but generally.
Now, if you want to see unhelpful, just watch Top Chef. Tom Collichio just walks around the kitchen, bugs everyone, makes them waste time talking to him, spews a few snarky and unhelpful comments, and gathers information that he can use against them at judging.
Tim hated Terri’s drag queen dress, and they had a verbal altercation about it that didn’t make the show. Then Terri was in the Top 2, so Tim was “wrong” about how the judges would react, even though I personally agreed with his opinion.
ETA: Did anyone notice that India Hicks on Top Design was wearing a Jerell knock-off? Her outfit looked a lot like the dress Jerell and Stella made for the Brooke Shields challenge, right down to the yellow belt.
It bothered me last time Kenley did it but this time I found it amusing. Especially since her mini-me was fighting not to crack up too. I think it was less about making fun of the contestant and more about the fact that the judge made the same exact comment about pocket squares that everyone had been joking about earlier in the episode! I would have had to have fought really hard not to crack up myself at the phrase “pocket squares”.
As for Suede, I was a little surprised to see him in the bottom two. His client seemed to really love her outfit by the way she did her walk, and the judges didn’t even bother to ask her how she liked it.
Old pocket square deserved to go. Beyond the whole cliche thing, it just didn’t look well made, and the blousey part was horribly fit. Made her boobs look deformed!
I quite like the medical school one. It looked kind of feminine and futuristic at the same time. She should have taken the jacket off towards the end of the runway walk though to show off the dress.
I’m glad the school teacher one got a pass. If she had lost it would have been more to do with the luck of the client draw than anything else.
Eh, I thought it was creepy when the mini-me was laughing, too. Like, must you imitate her at all costs? I think part of it is that Kenley has the most annoying laugh, too.
