At the time of Tim’s first check-in, it was a sleeveless leather wrap top. I’m not sure how much farther he went with it after the reaming.
Yeah, that’s what I thought.
I don’t know why he didn’t make a jacket or wrap to go over the original dress. That top seemed to be the best made (what little we saw of it), it was just more revealing than the client wanted.
I really liked Kelly’s overalls. I would never wear them, but they clearly fit her client well. They were stylish overalls and that isn’t easy to accomplish.
I think Ashley should have gone home. That peplum dress was unforgivable.
it looked to me like he was putting a sleeve on it but it was essentially backless. He did not get what his client was asking for and basically farted around for a day and a half and only showed a very simple wrap top that was nit even ready to try on and then started making excuses. Tim apparently watches them on the monitors and knows how much time they spend sewing and how much time they spend doing other things.
Tim Gunn is very passionate about PR and views someone doing half ass work to be an affront. Rightly so, there are thousands of designers who want to be on this show to have the chance to present at Fashion Week. Having someone who with talent blow off the competition week after week must be galling as the Executive Producer.
I must be seeing things. I thought there were sleeves, but you’re right.
I remember when this show was actually fun to watch. Remember the time Jay’s model didn’t show up during the USPS uniform challenge? Austin Scarlett stepped in to walk the runway, and completely rocked the women’s uniform. Good times.
It’s what I was thinking the other day. The show used to be fun, so what changed?
The designers used to have bigger personalities.
It’s hard to forget people like Austin Scarlett, Santino, Chris March, Rami, Micheal Knight, Mondo, Dmitry, Jeffery, Christian, Kara Saun, Uli - all memorable. You loved them or hated them but you don’t forget them.
The latest contestants are so boring. Nothing they design makes you sit up and say WOW! Nobody makes a powerful statement anymore. It seems like they all want to play it safe. I still watch, but I have no idea why.
It’s true – they haven’t even been able to edit up much drama in this season. I still watch because it’s a skill I don’t have and I like to see what they come up with. Next week is avant garde and the glimpse I saw (I try not to watch the teasers for next week too much) looked…questionable.
Avant garde has always been one of my favorite challenges.
Even those have been pretty boring the last few seasons.
I really don’t like drama between the contestants, but it seems (or maybe it’s just me) that the designs don’t have any flair anymore.
Maybe too many are playing it safe until it gets to the end.
then again, maybe it’s just me being bored
They’re making the challenges less challenging. Other than the obligatory unconventional materials, when have they done something with seriously out-there parameters? Remember remaking wedding dresses; or the first-challenge-off-the-bat when they had to tear up their own clothes and make a new outfit?
You’re right and those were good challenges.
It seems too, that they want wearable more often. In the beginning they didn’t want something you would buy in a store, they wanted something showstopping to walk down the runway.
I wonder if they just aren’t getting good (as in talented) people to apply anymore. This current group is uniformly meh.
How many times have they gone to Mood this year to get their own fabrics? Maybe 3? Also, it’s really difficult to make anything special in 1 day. 2 days should be the norm with an occasional 1 day challenge thrown in.
I wish Michael Kors would come back. I’m getting sick of seeing Zac feel up the models.
I’m not surprised that Ashley is melting down, I’m always surprised that the rest aren’t. The stress and 5 hours of sleep per night (or less) and no days off/ no outside contact will get to you.
I believe Tim if he meant his outburst was not producer manipulation, i.e. it was his idea to shout in frustration at Swapnil. But Tim is the mentor and it was not cool for him to berate Swapnil in front of the “client” (with whom, because he knew her, Tim identified waaay too much) and then lead her away by the hand which also prevented Swapnil from discussing the design further with her. Would any of us want to work with someone who screamed at underperforming workers in front of the rest of the office? Does that ever work as motivation? Does it work with someone from another culture? No, Tim is the mentor but he made sure that the rest of the judges knew that Swapnil was underperforming while he was in the Top 3 for five weeks straight.
btw, the button bag is easily producer manipulated, you can tell by the way it is edited. We don’t see the names, we only see Tim pulling a button out of the bag and announcing the pair ups. That’s how the pairings end up so dramatic.
There have been plenty of episodes when the designer didn’t have anything to put on the model for the fitting but no one called them lazy, just disorganized, and there have been quite a few designers who’ve sent models down the runway in disintegrating, unfinished clothes who didn’t earn a beat down from Tim before they were voted off.
We viewers always say we want less bickering and more designing and this season the designers all seem to get along (except for team challenge episode) so we got half our wish. Everyone likes Swapnil that I can see. Yet Heidi said in an interview that this was the most immature set of designers they’ve ever had. Nice.
After he was voted off, I did go look at his final collection and it was as gorgeous and dramatic as you’d expect. I just wish I could see the actual film instead of looking at still photos.
Here is an interesting article, one of several on this site, that discusses the reality of writing and filming reality tv. Unscripted does not mean Unwritten.
I believe they don’t go to Mood as often because the studio workroom location and accommodation are not in Manhattan anymore. Now I can’t remember which borough, Queens?, but it means that they don’t have the time to drive to Mood, which itself is a 3-4 hour filming event each time.
ps This is late but I didn’t realize until now that Finding Neverland was chosen because it was a Harvey Weinstein production.
A lot of it was the switch from Bravo to Lifetime. Lifetime tries to play it safe, while in its early incarnation, Bravo had nothing to lose so they could have more fun with the format.
Didn’t Edmund say during the auditions/casting scenes in the first episode that he’s applied for every season of PR? Sure, he’s probably been building up his skills in the meantime, but still… I feel like talented up-and-coming designers have seen the result of appearing in the show, and even despite the big prize and exposure, maybe they don’t think it’s worth it any more. I know I wouldn’t.
I have come to accept and embrace that this is just a game show and has nothing to do with design. I read the linked article last week (previously.tv has multiple pages on this) and it appears from the article, and simple from Tim’s actions last week, that he just didn’t like Swapnil and wanted him gone. There have been plenty of “lazy” designers, or designers who turned out total crap (like Blaine? from season 5) who were far less talented than Swapnil and Tim never talked to them like that. I think Tim needs to be gone.
I had pegged Edmond, Ashley, and Swapnil for the final 3. Edmond will definitely make it. Ashley is a one way monkey who despite all her talk about designing for a plus size woman, can only do circle skirts and crop tops (like those are flattering to those of with a tummy and hips???). She can leave this week.
I do love me an avante garde challenge, although none will even come close to the brilliance of Season 4’s pairings of Chris/Christain and Jillian/Victorya. I still covet the coat J/V made for that challenge.
I wondered if Swapnil had been caught smoking something other than cigs on his breaks. That might account for the anger from Tim.
The contracts they sign are very strict. If that was the case, they’d just bounce him out and say he broke the rules. They got rid of the pattern book guy fast enough.
So it turns out Swapnil’s first shirt DID have long sleeves after all. I knew I wasn’t seeing things.
I requested a screencap of his first top from a friend on another board. This is her reply:
I’m sure one of the other hundreds of members will come up with a photo, I’ll link to it when it’s posted.
