Does anyone know of any protein bars that absolutely,100% do NOT have soy? This doesn’t seem like it should be as impossible to find as it actually is. Surely somewhere, SOMEONE must manufacture one with whey protein, egg protein, etc…???
MET-Rx makes a bar called Big 100 that is a whey based protein bar. From what I understand it is absolutely disgusting though with a weird unpalatable texture. You could probably Google it.
Ah, here it is. The ingredients are bottom left.
Note: The chocolate chips have “soy lecithin” which, I think, is an emulsifier.
I once made my own by mixing peanut butter, whey protein powder, and, as I recall, unsweetened coconut flakes until the consistency became quite dense. Then, fridge till firm and slice.
I would not describe them as delicious… though, if you need complete control of the process (as in a severe allergy) it might be worth it to you for peace of mind.
That doesn’t sound half-bad. Did they fall apart when they were no longer refrigerated? Could you take them on a hike or would it just turn into a bag of goo?
The recipe was alot like this one:
only it definitely had the coconut (I was trying to sneak some fiber in there and still keep it low carb). Also I don’t remember so much butter in ratio to the peanut butter.
As I recall it was slightly crumbly out of the fridge. Wrapped up well, it should make it through a hike without self-destructing.
Well, when I googled “soy-free protein bar”, these folks came up. Under their “Think Organic”, their Raw Fruit And Nut Snack Bar is billed as being soy-free, mainly because it’s just…fruit and nuts.
And Buddha Bars came up.
Also these folks.
So they are out there. No idea which retail establishments carry them, sorry, but it looks like they’re probably available online.
What’s wrong with a strip of jerky? Loads o’ protein!
Yes, but fruit and nuts is good as a meal replacement, but not so great as a protein bar. For example the Buddha Bar you listed has 9g of protein, the yucky MET-Rx bar has 27g. Three times as much.
I eat a lot of the “nature bars” for the average meal replacement. They are great for making sure you get your core vitamins, but if you are looking specifically for a protein-rich snack source, you’re better off eating a half-cup of almonds. (One cup of almonds has 30g of protein).
Actually a large strip beef jerky only has only about 6-7g of protein. Protein bars have 15-30g of protein plus a ton of other useful vitamins and nutrients.
This is giving me some ideas about making my own… I found a source for pecan butter! And yes, I’ll probably eat jerky WITH it, but there’s only so much jerky I can take.
