Qin Curtis Shi Lemay Huangdi is a FAKE?

No, he doesn’t. I don’t want to pick on the guy; I don’t think he’s a bad guy. He’s free to do what he wants with his life. I just think he’s maybe too over-educated and needs more people skills, and you can’t get those from a book.

Especially books suggested by you.

Good one, Stale Snark Nonny.

Nonny? Fuck that noise. I put my snark, stale or not, with my name.

*Damn, didn’t mean to double post, though.

I don’t get it, why would snark get stale?

I’m on record as not liking the little pissant - a lot. But I don’t think he’s a fake or a troll. Just a creepy little shit.

And I was never like that as a kid - that insufferable. That whole thread about him sexually harassing girls at school…brrrrr…

Well, as noticed, he is named after a guy that decided that after he got to learn just what he needed, he then decided that books should be burned and scholars buried alive, you bet that he needs people skills..

To be fair, if you’re talking about his current name, I don’t see it much different as naming yourself after Ghengis Khan, Attila the Hun, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler, etc. The guy lived what, over 2000 years ago? There was a hockey player for the Detroit Redwings whose nickname was Vlad the Impaler.

I think it’s more of a fascination with history thing. I’m not defending Qin per se, but to go after him for his name, that’s pretty dumb.

(Hey, maybe I’ll change mine to Erzsébet Báthory? I’m Hungarian-Slovak on my mom’s side. That’d be kinda cool)

Well, were I coming from is history, and not only the one from the person he got the moniker from, but from poster history, his bit about Chomsky and swallowing what global warming deniers say (On one previous discussion), reminded me of the current anti-intellectualism going on in extreme right wing circles, and as book burnings or banning and threats to intellectuals are also their bread and butter, I do not think his choice of moniker was a coincidence.

Honestly, I really don’t think it has anything to do with that. It’s more likely that Qin Shi Huangdi is a symbol of power, and young teenage boys are obsessed with power. The ones who have the least power tend to be the most obsessed with it. Qin is socially awkward, he was raised in a strict religious environment, and he probably feels alienated from his peers. So, identifying with this ancient Chinese emperor (who was probably the kid’s ancestor, way back down the line) is empowering for him.

If it was just a symbol of power I would understand, but his posting history shows otherwise. BTW, I do think this defense is getting silly, it is really hard to believe that if he is a good student of History that it would be hard to miss what the first emperor of China did to the intellectuals of the day.

There are more ways to show empowerment, in this case the problem is like if someone called himself Dracula, I would not worry at all if then he usually posted about football, but if he suddenly began to ask about blood bank hours, or ways to sharpen wood stakes, then one has to go :dubious:

I just read that entire thread.

I run hot and cold about Qin. He can really be a smug little shit. I agree his behavior as described was inappropriate but I think it falls short of creepy. If he was 35 and acting like that? Yeah. Creepy. 16ish and diagnosed with Aspergers? That actually makes me have sympathy for his situation.

But all his dancing around what kind of links he sent the girl and then his self flagellation for it being a story of “a base nature” and “not moral” just makes it kinda pathetic.

I don’t harbor any hate for the kid but he really enjoys being the center of attention sometimes. Too bad, because he can make some very interesting contributions to discussions when he wants to.

I think Qin needs to put down the books and take a cotillion class to help him with his people skills. I know I was terribly awkward at 15 but there isn’t much written evidence around now; I’ve burned a lot of journal pages full of crapola i’d scribbled.

The part that bugs me most about Qin is that he has a terrific opportunity to interact with people who have knowledge worth sharing and all he does is try to lecture the SDMB like nobody here knows shit about shit.

Do it, do it, do it.

This, pretty much. I give him a lot of slack just because he seems to be trying sometimes. I hope he doesn’t go radical left - converts tend to be highly dogmatic and being a left-wing dogmatic is not really an improvement over being a right-wing one - but one hopes he gains something useful from his experiences here. He could probably stand to lay off starting threads he doesn’t come back to, though.

No, don’t. I don’t want to have to fuck around with diacriticals if I can avoid it.

Really? It does nothing to lessen my dislike. “But I’m an Aspie!” is no fucking excuse for sexual harrasment.

Quinn the Eskimo. That would be cool and keeping with the is he/isn’t he motif.

Credit where credit’s due: I am totally stealing this (though I probably won’t actually credit you).

Wise choice. I have a feeling Der Trihs knows a great deal about what goes into diagnosing one as mentally ill.
