Two weeks ago I lost a bet when my San Francisco 49ers lost to my friend’s Philadelphia Eagles. The loser had to sing the other team’s fight song. So, I sang the Eagles’ fight song. And it’s been stuck in my head.
I’ve had the stupidest song in my head for the last 5 days and it won’t leave!! Usually annoying songs are out in a day or two, but this one is driving me nuts…uggghhh!!!
Lonely Night (Angel Face) by the Captain & Tennille (1976).
What an obscure song. It came out when I was 11 years old. Quite torturous to have that blasting in your head for more than 5 minutes!
You all are very lucky in your earworms. Most of mine are horrible embarrassing songs that take hold in my brain and will not leave.
I heard that on Dr. Demento back in 1988 or so, and being a teenager in Ottawa, I’d never heard of those streets, so the entire song was basically just random syllables to me, albeit random syllables with a hook. When I finally saw the clip from Forbidden Zone years later, many years after I’d lived in L.A., it was like the scales fell from my eyes.
Kpop song by G=idle has been rattling around my ears and brain for the past couple of weeks. On the surface, Oh My God seems like another, “Caught up in love/wanna love.” song, But I just learned today that the song, especially the MV may be much deeper.
The song was written by the leader and rapper So Yeon.
Here’s the Korean version with English lyrics:
At first I thought the translation of ‘she’ might have just been a gender neutral pronoun. But reading and watching interpretations of the song, some by native speakers, ‘she’ is definitely female.
Here’s the MV:
and the interpretation of its meaning by a native Korean speaker. Turn on CC for the translation.
I have to watch a few more dozen times to take it all in. And there’s a lot of other videos with their interpretation.
G-idle often makes English and Japanese versions of their songs with similar lyrics. But their English version adds another dimension and possible interpretation to the song:
Most of the group doesn’t speak English, so their heavy accents makes understanding what they’re saying difficult.
But we’re not done yet! Yes, I’m probably reading too much into this, but I was listening to the English version all day, today and it brought me to tears several times.
Soo Jin sings:
Babe, babe, you got me losing my mind…
Toxic, toxic. I tell my friends I’m fine. But I’m a liar.
In March 2021, she was accused of being a bully in middle school and was placed on hiatus from the group. Then in March 2022, it was announced that we was terminated. It was then revealed that there was no proof that she was a bully and one of her accusers recanted, saying she wasn’t sure it was Soo Jin who did the bullying. She brought a lawsuit against her accuser, but citing a lack of evidence proving she was wrongly accused, she dropped the suit in September 2022.
Note that this isn’t a condemnation of Soo Jin. Actually the opposite. She was wrongly accused, was ousted from the group and her agency, then dropped her lawsuit when it was decided she couldn’t win against her accuser.
Toxic, toxic. I tell my friends I’m fine. But I’m a liar.
AFAIK, she hasn’t been heard from since March 2022, but there’s an irony in the line above. She’s supposedly okay with dropping the lawsuit, but is she?
Later, Shu Hua sings:
Put your hands all over, Want your smell on me forever.
I’m losing my composure. Nobody does it better.
Time and time again, I told myself I need to let go.
Then I fall right back into your arms.
In the MV, Soo Jin may be the object of affection. And Soo Jin and Shu Hua are best friends and former roommates, affectionately known as SooShu

Platonic or otherwise, there’s real love and caring between the two.
Sadly neither Soo Jin or Shu Hua meet the exacting beauty standards of some Kpop fans, and both were called ugly during during a live webcast. Soo Jin was obviously stunned speechless, ending her webcast shortly after. But when Shu Hua was told the same thing during her webcast, possibly by the same viewer, she got extremely angry, referencing what was said to her best friend Soo Jin and saying she didn’t care about herself, but not to say bad things to her friends.
Shu Hua then has the best possible comeback. Telling her bandmate Mi Yeon, the poster is the ugliest because they have no face! GO SHU HUA! My near tears turn into a huge smile everytime!

Was at the pub last night, and Tuesday Afternoon by The Moody Blues was played on the stereo. It’s been stuck in my head ever since.
Odd choice for pub music. That’s the kind of song they’d play over speakers outside the 7-11 to discourage loiterers.
I just bought tickets for a Vienna Teng concert, who’s back on tour after a 10? year hiatus. That’s made me put on her music, and so any one of a number of songs have been getting stuck in my head. Gravity, The Tower, Antebellum, White Light…
Georgy Girl by The Seekers. That stupid chorus is stuck in my head.
I’ve got two. Curvaceous Needs by Katzenjammer and The Bitch Came Back by Theory of a Deadman Both came up as I was wandering around YouTube Music in various moods. Primarily when I was in a bad mood and needed music to fit with that. “Curvaceous Needs” is actually what I think when I’m feeling body positive. “The Bitch Came Back” has me thinking of a crush/friend whose ex treated him pretty badly. And since I think about him a lot, this song runs through my brain a lot.
