I for one don’t get the RO over RO in the pit, but it seems to send people into fits of rage which for me is entertaining, so, ::shrugs::, carry on.
The forum description for the BBQ Pit explicitly gives “it’s stated purpose” as:
The BBQ Pit is explicitly stated as being the place for rants; Great Debates, on the other hand, is for ‘long-running discussions on great questions, debates, and witnessing’. Such are not the same as rants, and were I to post a thread in GD in which I did nothing but rail against some great perceived evil, it would very likely be moved to the forum for rants (the Pit).
Since this forum description has been amended over the years (more than once – it formerly said ‘If you’ve gotta flame, do it here’, and formerly directed complaints about the Board to the Pit), I can only assume that it remains current and authoritative.
I stand by my position that rants belong in the pit, while debates remain in GD. Threads which evolve from one to the other (or are inappropriately placed) are frequently moved from GD to the Pit, and occasionally in the reverse direction. And I further stand by my position that a rant serves a useful purpose:
– in shining light on a problem previously shadowed in ignorance
– in bringing the ranter to face his own ill-conceived notions when people demonstrate his errors
– in letting off steam and giving an opportunity for catharsis.
Now you can think these things are a waste of time, but ranting in the Pit is useful, it fights ignorance, and it is official Board policy, per the forum description. You’re right that this isn’t GD with profanity; it’s rants and flames, rather than debates and witnessing.

I agree with you, and I would add that cites should not be avoided when flaming, the hatred of cites by the OP demonstrates why many being flamed are so dead set against them, a citation in combination of a flame is a very powerful weapon against ignorant ranting. People that think they should confront flames with no citations are only demanding that their beautiful theories be not confronted with ugly facts.
As you mention, the pit offers an opportunity for catharsis, citations offer that x100 by adding one important dimension: One can not really depend much on poster’s opinions, valid citations offer context and support. Thanks to the internet, one can not get away with BS as it was possible before. Controversial as he is, Woody Allen did hit the nail on the head regarding how frustrating it was to deal with silly bloviators before the internet in that scene with the critic in Annie Hall:

I understand the urge to vent. And we have a forum where we pretend that we will read and care about their inane blather, and that forum is called More Pointless Shit I Must Share.
Nobody actually reads that forum though, because we all know that it will be typical self-indulgent drivel about bad daddies and having to refrain from acting like a fucking animal in public. People have gotten wind of this and have tried to slip this confession-porn into the Pit. We must resist this.

Personally I don’t give a shit. I think that ivn1188’s thread is very meta, it’s self-referential, at one time it is both a perfect example of what he despises, and a venue he has created for the rest of us to continue on doing that which he has explicitly stated that he cannot stand.

I picture you wetting yourself with glee whenever you see how many people are responding negatively to what your delusions convince you is your wit. I think it’s amusing that you validate yourself by patrolling an internet message board and extoll on how everyone else but you is a gibbering idiot. Even if you got a hundred threads moved, it still doesn’t change the fact that you’re a deluded, angry attention whore with nothing better to do.
Or, more than likely he is the sock puppet of a previously banned poster. That said, nobody that lurks for 10 years is going to suddenly decide “hey, it’s been a decade, I’ll sign up now”.

Right.
Hell, ivn/Rand, a couple of times you’ve posted on the wrong account to me. I responded to Rand, and ivn responded back to me. Only thing that saved you there was the mods being completely asleep at the switch.
