^^^ Ten minutes later, me too. I tried a different browser, same thing.

Caused a thread games double post here: https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=22073431#post22073431
Damn!
I posted the first, got the error, then reloaded the thread and saw that I lost my post.
Damn!
So I recomposed my post and posted it. That’s when I saw my original post DID hit. Wow. And…
Damn!
I’m no expert, but from what I’ve been reading through the links in this thread … it seems that these errors are:
a) very strictly server-side (e.g. whatever server on which the SDMB physical files reside) and also …
b) completely unrelated to anything regarding the clients (us SDMB users, and out various computer & software configurations).
…
However. I have noticed that a handful of the same users keep coming into this thread reporting this issue over and over. I realize that many users may get an intermittent 504 error and shrug it off, never to post about it here. But still. Even though these errors are supposed to be independent of whatever is happening on the users’ end … the concentration of complaints (as opposed to breadth) at this point makes me curious.
One thing I am 90% sure about (and 10% unsure about
):
This is a different thing than the 502/504 errors and could very well be on your side.
…
I haven’t seen but one 504 error this calendar year. Rather, my experience with the board in recent days has been more like what **ftg **and **Chefguy **reported in their most recent posts upthread: general, nondescript sluggishness.
But for me, even that sluggishness is not all the time. Not even all that often in recent days. Things – right now – seem pretty much OK in regards to opening threads here, posting, etc.
I’ve mentioned a couple of times that the problem doesn’t happen to me very often. I first joined this thread in December when I was getting timeouts. Since then, I’ve had only a few actual errors, with slow response a little more often than that. I’ve had no problems at all over the past few days.
If the problem really is on the server, maybe there’s an issue with user authentication that affects some users more than others. Maybe it’s a problem with cookies.
any news of a fix? Bueller ? Anyone? Bueller?

I gotta say, whatever emergency fix was done over the holidays didn’t work very well.
If it was a holiday fix, seems to be some debate on that.
And between all of us we’re probably using them and calling in a few geek-friends as well. But, like my other computer, Vb is really really old and showing its age and compared to more modern systems it just has bugs that are hard to fix. And I don’t think anyone has a financial interest in going after them. It may be - may, not sure - that TPTB will have to go Platform Shopping again some time in the next year or so. Or the rest of us will have to get used to hitting refresh a lot.
But whatever the case, I have no doubt volunteer time and a lot of effort is being spent.
There was a period of 1-2 days where nobody reported errors, IIRC. Maybe 2 weeks ago.
502 Server Error
Error: Server Error

Just now in Thread Games. Win 10, Chrome, laptop. (sigh)
Sometimes people don’t report them all the time.
I have the hanging for minutes on end, with no error message all the time here.
A half dozen times a day. But I don’t report them all day long.
This board has almost become unusable for me - over the last week I’ve been getting so many 502/504’s (doesn’t matter what time of day).
I’m giving up a lot more quickly, now, and just surfing elsewhere.
Doesn’t seem to be certificate-related but there’s this odd thing going on.
There’s a random process going on where in some threads the new posts are properly marked and in other threads they are shown as old posts. No pattern to it at all.
Click on 10 threads, 4 will be properly marked, 6 won’t be. Age of new posts, thread, etc. doesn’t matter.
Nope. I’m getting them too. Last night, I couldn’t log on to the site from my phone - the message was that my phone’s time was wrong, and would I like to adjust it? I got that message at 08:59:17 EST. And my computer’s clock read: 08:59:17 EST.
Of course, just because people have not reported the problem, it doesn’t mean the problem hasn’t been occurring. But it might mean that. And when people do report the problem, it is data
I’m sure there are plenty of posters like me who only wander into ATMB when things get really, really bad.
Also, I’ve been able to access the board through email links since yesterday afternoon. It seems to be pretty snappy now.
That particular “phone time is wrong” error was due to the SDMB’s site certificate expiring. It was a different thing from the 504 errors.
What’s the point in having an edit function when the site is so slow it just sits there till the clock runs out?
