Return of the NYC Thursday Night Dope-Dinners

Ahem . . . let’s keep this on the first page.

I really should leave by nine—it IS a “school night”—but I’m still planning to make it. Dammit, it’s supposed to rain tomorrow . . . That lets out the Marie Antoinette costume I was planning to wear . . .

Just as well, Eve . . . someone would’ve had to schlep a guillotine . . . in the rain !

Yeah - you wouldn’t want to slip in a puddle while carrying one of those…

Aw, MAN…

Does that mean they won’t let us eat cake?

(ducks)

OK gang, since it’s going to be a big one, I’ve called in a reservation for 14 or so at Blondies for 6:30 under the name of “Cecil Adams.”

Whoever gets there on time (and chances are it won’t be me), take the table and order a pitcher of beer (or two . . or three . . .). Most folks seem to get there by 7’ish, but we know that there’ll be some latecomers.

See you tomorrow.

I haven’t been on the Upper West Side for years . . . Is there any time-killing place around there? It’s supposed to rain, so window-shopping is out. But if I leave work at 5:00-ish, I’ll need a nearby library or Barnes & Noble or something to hide from the downpour and kill some time.

Haven’t really done that neighborhood in about 15 years—does Amsterdam still suck and Columbus is nice, or has it reversed itself by now?

There’s a Barnes & Noble just around the corner on Broadway and 82nd (in fact, IIRC it took over the old Shakespeare & Co. space). There’s also the St. Agnes branch of the NYPL on Amsterdam near 81st - but you’ll note it closes at 6:00.

Personally, I’m perfectly happy wandering around Zabars, especially the housewares section - often good deals for sale items. Laytner’s Linens sometimes has decent sales, too.

And don’t forget, there’s Harry’s Shoes, with the best selection of sizes in New York. Prices are nothing special, but boy is the service good.

Shakespeare & Co. is gone? Augh! Shows how long since I’ve been up in that neck o’ the woods. Well, I’ll be killing time at that B&N on B’way between 82nd–83rd, if any of you wanna come cruising for me beforehand.

Ahem. Ah, yes. Remember me? From back in the day at that place? The really really big one we had in the winter? Right, that one. Well, I’m going to make it some time between 7:00 and 8:00. And…ah shit, it’s raining out. Hrmmm. Well I’ll start walking towards the subway when it stops raining, but I will get there. Promise.

Damn. I’m so sorry. I really wanted to make it. I got stuck at work late and only just got home. Hope you kids had a blast.

Thank you, I had a great time. Some interesting discussion and very friendly people. Oh, and thanks for telling me what you really thought about my nuts!

DaLovin’ Dj

Had a swell time too—though I fear I was unintentionally bitchy to DrMatrix . . . Enjoyed playing “taking Kay out of the briefcase” with Oxymoron!

Hoo-boy. That was a great evening folks! Thanks!

And stuyguy even showed up and finally brought me the stuff. Thanks stuyguy.

Now, for my confesssion.

I left early (well, earlier than most) because I’m a corporate lacky and had to work today. I went home and soon thereafter went to sleep.

And then I woke up, at three in the morning, in a cold sweat, heart beating like snare drum, and made a realization

I didn’t leave any money for the food/beer when I left.

I’m really, really sorry. I feel like such an ass. So next time, (Assuming, of course, that I was not responsible for the bankruptcy of the Emergency Doper Food Fund) I promise to pay for two people.

No worries, friedo. We ended up with just the right amount on the table.

Friedo, I’d be very judicious in deciding which two people to pay for!

and Eve, it was the putting Kay back that was more fun!

I remember SOMEone asked me for these lyrics last night; was it Oxy or Stuyguy?

Chorus:
O Genevieve, Sweet Genevieve,
The days may come, the days may go,
But still the hands of mem’ry weave
The blissful dreams of long ago.

O Genevieve, I’d give the world
To live again the lovely past!
The rose of youth is dew-impearl’d,
But now it withers in the blast.

I see thy face in ev’ry dream,
My waking thoughts are full of thee,
Thy glance is in the starry beam
That falls along the summer sea!
Fair Genevieve, my early love! The years but make thee dearer far. My heart shall never, never rove; Thou art my only guiding star.
For me the past has no regret. Whate’er the years may bring to me I bless the hour when first we met, The hour that gave me love and thee!

[Godammit, there WERE line returns there when I posted!]

Eve, that was me. Hey you remembered. Thank you, thank you.

Next Doperfest I may try to liquor you up and get you to sing it on a tabletop… with or without a trumpet. [winky grin]

Seriously, it was great meeting you in person (… and seeing everyone else too, of course). I’m very excited for you about your new book. Good luck with it.

Due to the fantastical success of last night’s rendezvous, and to the spectacular failure of myself to cough up any cash, I hereby take it upon myself to announce the location for next week’s (Thursday, Aug 30) dinnertime doperfest:

Ruby Foo’s, 1626 Broadway, between 49th and 50th.

This is one of my favorite places; you can get everything from Sushi to Chinese to Thai food. A shmorgous(sp?!) board of asian cuisine, if you will.

And they have beer. Lots of beer.

Let me know if you can come and I will make a reservation for 7:00!
