Welcome to the SDMB! If you can ignore a lot of the priggishness and “intellectual” one-upsmanship that goes on here, it’s a pretty cool place. Good reading, a lot of laughs, and sometimes even informative (it’s stated aim).

You dared to disagree with some popular posters’ cherished beliefs. Naughty, naughty Rev! You obviously must be chastised! Nice to see you holding your own under this uncalled-for shitstorm. It’s truly a delight to behold. But please don’t categorize all of us Dopers with those who’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to slag you. I think if you keep it together you will continue to be a fine addition to the boards.

I would just like to say that Rev. seems like an intelligent articulate guy to me too. Yes, his opinions are strong and he expresses them forcefully, but that doesn’t make him a troll.

Rev I bookmarked your website btw, I enjoy your writing and I find your arguments fascinating even when I disagree with them. the piece on NASA and the Columbia disaster was brilliant.

Guys, don’t run this guy off. I think he would be an asset to the SDMB.

Before everyone rushes to the side of the good Reverend, or lines up against him, I suggest poking around the Internet a bit. You may find some surprising things. Then again, some of you probably won’t be surprised at what you find. I’ve seen a few unsavory items authored by him, but I’ve also seen a couple that might charitably be called inspired. My overall impression of him is one of mild distaste. The Reverend, in my opinion, is someone who thrives on controversy simply for the sake of controversy. I’d be surprised if he actually held all the views I’ve seen espoused.

The Reverend, in my opinion, is someone who thrives on controversy simply for the sake of controversy. I’d be surprised if he actually held all the views I’ve seen espoused.

No, I just don’t shy from controversy. Now, which views do you doubt that I hold? I can give you a rundown on some of my basic views:

Atheist (God(s) is a figment of your imagination), empiracist, logical postivist (Metaphysics are meaningless. Statements about the world must be empirically verified), Humean, skeptic (Current member of the National Capital Area Skeptics), epiphenomenalist (the mind is just an emergent property of what the brain does).

I have a degree in analytic philosophy. I have been interested in philosophy of science and the occult from way back, even before I switched my major from Political Science.

Politically I am a moderate on some issues, a fascist on others and a democratic socialist on others (especially concerning HMOs).

Then again, I am a graphic artist and did a number of poetry slams in my time.

When you put it all together it may indicate a hard-headed skeptical outlook on most things with just enough artsiness not to be too crabby.

It’s true though that I may not hold some views in much the same way that Swift didn’t really encourage eating babies. However, I never cease to be amazed when some people don’t get obvious satire. I have refrained from tagging all items on my site with “this is funny”, “this is satire” , “this is serious”. People that can’t figure out the difference deserve to be confused.

UncleBeer, Rev may be a complete asshole and the biggest fuck the SDMB has ever seen or he may turn out to be one of the better posters. Who knows? Certainly not I. In fact, I may think he is a dick after reading his work.

I am just bothered with the latest trend that appears (at least to me) that newbies must run a grueling gauntlet, fly under the radar, kiss ass, or sniff butts before they are considered eligible to stay. This is really what is bothering me with this Reverend thing.

I again wonder how the first few posts by Rev (before shit really hit the fan) would have been received had they been written by one of the beloved regs. We shouldn’t assume that all newbies are socks, trolls, idiots, or wet behind the ears when it comes to message boards.

As for being noisy and controversial- he’s expressed an opinion, backed it up with sites, and been challenged by assholes claiming he expressed an opinion he plainly didn’t express. Believe it or not, I agree with this. We do have a handful of posters whose primary reason for being here is to be controversial. Do a search for december and you’ll see what I mean. I have no doubt that you do not shy from controversy. I would go further though, and say you seem to court it. As for what views I’ve seen from you that I don’t really believe you hold, how about this one (scroll to the very last post) where you are speaking of teens shooting (and blowing up) their schoolmates:

Of course, the German kids are that much more efficient than the American shooters, managing to cap an extra five kids over Klebold and Harris, the previous record holders. And one can bet if the German kids used explosives, they would have worked, unlike the Columbine kid’s failed do-it-yourself demolition jobs.

Of course, simple body counts are a crude measure of success. If we are going to worry endlessly about this sort of thing (and ignore sources of even more death and mayhem, like the automobile and the fact that rougly 3,000 folks aged 15-24 cap themselves anyway [ref.]), we should be giving out points for style.

For example: No points for Kip Kinkle. If you are going to go on a shooting rampage, at least blow your own head off so we don’t have to listen your yourwhining, sniveling confession.

The problem with kids today is that they have either no role models, or, in the case of the German kids, rather lame role models like Klebold and Harris. They should be looking back at the greats, folks like Charles Whitman, the Texas Tower Sniper, who managed to shoot someone between a 6 inch space in a balustrade from 400 yards away, and in one case, nailed someone who stood up, thinking he was out of range, from 500 yards. That’s over a quarter mile. Fuck dud propane tanks, that’s finesse for you.

It would be sad to think kids are caught in a cycle of copy-catting bad copy cats like an endless series of bad Xeroxes, when they could be emulating the masters.

Or maybe there is a third possibility: Sarcasm directed at the previous poster named Pexxa who, if you knew anything about the CSB is a hopeless troll and courter of controversy, conspiracy and strange significance. In this case, it was Pexxa being able to make sweeping generalizations about America and American kids while at the same time avoiding making the same conclusions about a shooting in Germany. The post was a dig at the strange significances and conclusions this poster tends to pull from his ass.

Contrary to many Americans USA is not paradise on earth and there is well of visdom for Europe from USA in good (inventions and art) and bad (American gun legislation/its results).
