Why? No one in here will agree with pretty much anything you say. This is not a defense of torture, just an acknowledgement that there are greater and lesser evils. Everyone here still thinks you’re a fucking asshole for supporting torture and a coward for disguising it under euphemisms.
Iran is a oppressive and tyrannical theocracy. That this sort of thing goes on isn’t really shocking so much as it is to be expected. They murder gays, they murder women for having ‘improper’ sex, they keep their Jewish population as second class citizens whose families are held hostage if one member wants to leave the country, and so on.
Yes, it sucks. And the people of Iran deserve a whole lot better than the tyrants who are in charge. Maybe they’ll shake them off one day without blood, but I’m not betting on it.

Does something in that drunken rant of mine have some special relevance about Iran? Does it show some hidden aspect to my personality that indicates a taste for torture? Does it, perhaps, demonstrate something concerning state sponsored murder or even adultery? Or maybe it just reminds you of the state you currently seem to be in? Inquiring minds want to know! I suppose I can add that to the list of reasons why my wife would be really irritated with me if I grew out a beard. I tried once and it didn’t go well.
One of my colleagues, also a good friend, is fresh off the boat from Iran on a student visa. Shortly before she came to the US, she attended an anti-Ahmedinejad rally in Tehran. A few days later, she got a call on her cell phone from the police. They told her that she had been spotted, identified, and photographed in the protest. They told her that they knew where she was, and that at any time the authorities wanted, they could apprehend and imprison her more or less indefinitely.
I can barely imagine what everyday life must be like under these circumstances. The Iranians do indeed deserve better than this.
