Russia invades Ukraine {2022-02-24} (Part 1)

Israeli missles have wiped out a factory in Syria that assembled drones from parts made in Iran. These may or may not have been destined for use in Ukraine. No human casualties were reported.

That’s an interesting development. Not striking Russian territory, but instead, striking other countries that enable Russia’s efforts. Of course, then to balance against any nuclear negotiations with Iran…

The fly in the ointment there is that Russia might start urging its allies to attack nations contributing to Ukraine’s war effort, saying “they did it first”.

Yeah - good point. A sticky situation all around.

Israel’s animosity towards both Iran and Syria is well-established. All they have to say is “those drones were/could have been used against us. We took proactive steps to make sure they couldn’t. What Ukraine?”

The simple fact is that Russia can say whatever nonsense they want and their captives allies will claim to believe them, no matter how counter-factual.

The Finnish ambassador has penned a stirring op-ed calling on the US to stay the course.

Does Ukraine have the forces to enter a city and fight from street to street? It’s my understanding Ukraine has very good light infantry and little heavy Armored divisions

Russia lost a lot of men fighting in Mariupol.

My guess is Rus. will try to get as much of their heavy equipment out as possible while they still have a little time holding onto the Kakhovka dam, and still have ferries in operation. They’ll probably leave a contingent - not necessarily a large force - of light infantry in Kherson to fight it out to the bitter end, and inflict as much damage as possible on the city infrastructure and the attacking Ukr troops. I also expect they will lay waste to the city with artillery from the south bank of the Dneiper all the while the street battles rage.

Apparently this was too much, even for Russia:

Yes. Even evil has some standards…

Too bad Kevin McCarthy is unable to read and comprehend something that length. Maybe he could get someone to explain it to him.

Yes, they do, as they have already shown. From my experience, heavy armor is a hindrance in street fighting. Too much of your infantry is tied up protecting the armor. Much better to just use infantry supported by artillery as needed.

I understand Russia is leaving behind only the new untrained infantry while they evacuate all heavier weapons and, of course, officers. They are going to sacrifice troops for time. Of course, if the troops flee or surrender like they have been doing, that plan totally falls apart.

Thanks to @Walken_After_Midnight for the nitter advice. Works great for translation.

Or wants to make us think it has a line it won’t cross, against all the evidence they’ve given that they went over that line a long, long time ago.

Nah, they’re just angry that he’s releasing spoilers from Season 2.

No, I’m sure McCarthy and his kind comprehend perfectly well. It’s deliberate trollery. They know how vital US aid to Ukraine is, so they’re deliberately being penny wise and pound foolish.

Like someone who deliberately tries to save money on fire extinguishers so that a company would be unable to put out a fire if needed some day, as opposed to trimming the vastly greater wasteful expenses elsewhere.

The authoritarians of the world tend to stick together. This is also why we’re hearing a lot less about Iran as well. Though they play for different teams, they’re all playing the same game.

Modnote: Keep politics out of Breaking News threads.

Some way should be found to persuade Putin that defeat in war doesn’t necessarily mean personal jeopardy for him. After all, Saddam survived the defeat of the 1991 Gulf War just fine. So Putin can withdraw now.

On the contrary, should Putin persist, there is more reason for him to be assassinated or overthrown, not less.

Sorry 'bout that. It was in direct reply to the Finland article so I thought it was okay.

The Fletcher Memorial Home is sounding better and better.
