Sappy love songs you hate to admit you like

I love just about every song named so far.
I’d like to add a song that grabbed me the first time I heard it, and I’ve never stopped liking it:
“Sometimes When We Touch” by Dan Hill.

I would readily admit liking the Carpenters. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better voice than Karen’s.

Otherwise known as “Gecko Love”?

Sorry, but I used to like it too, before they started using it for that damn GEICO commercial. I mean, come on folks!

Q

Theres no shame in admitting …I love Ambrosia! there I said it.

“Your the biggest part of me”
“How much I feel”
“Your the only woman”

Thats some good belly rubbin music…By that I mean slow dancing.

“Falling” (or “Fallin’?”) by LeBlanc and Carr (whoever they are).

It is a really sappy 70s lite rock love song, and even though I am as tough a cultural critic as anyone, I get misty eyed over this song. The “you wrote my name in the sand” line especially gets me. I think this is because it seems to be such a pure expression of that innocent, giddy feeling of love at its very best. When you are just happy to be with someone, and not even thinking about mundane worries like the bills that need to be paid, the household work that needs to be done, the tension with other family members or co-workers, and so on.

There are many less sappy love songs that I like a lot, such as “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” by Bob Dylan, “Attics of My Life” by the Grateful Dead, and “Love’s Recovery” by the Indigo Girls.

Very sappy tune, but it never fails to make me choke up: It’s a German song called Junge, Komm’ Bald Wieder (translates loosely as Son, Come Back Soon) by Freddy Quinn who was born in Vienna and educated here in the States.

The song tells the story of a young man who runs away to sea, and receives a letter from his Mom telling him she worries about him, and to return to her soon.

What makes it special to me is the fact that my friends in Germany play and sing that song to me the night before I have to fly back home. They do this just before I leave the pub to return to my hotel room, and it just means so much to me even though it is a sappy song.

You can listen to the song by going to the Freddy Quinn homepage.

Black Books by Nils Lofgren. My dark secret on my Sopranos soundtrack.

I’m weird. I like gory movies, sick humor and loud violent rock music, but I’m also a sucker for a good tearjerking movie or sappy love song.

I like a lot of the songs already mentioned. I also really like If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot. Can’t put my finger on why, but that song gets to me every time I hear it. (Which admittedly ain’t that often, but still . . .)

I also love Something by the Beatles, though I feel it is neither sappy nor a song anyone should be ashamed to admit to enjoying. Hell, Frank Sinatra called it the greatest love song ever. Who am I to argue to Frankie?

There we go…

Love it!

Came in here to mention “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton.

Also, that Madonna song.
Oh, the humanity!

Ach. Am I really about to admit this?

Madonna, “Crazy for You.” That is one sexy song.

And “Take My Breath Away” (aka the Top Gun song) by Berlin. (Gimme a break! It was the theme song to my sophomore-year homecoming dance…)

…and if I’d read the entire thread, I’d have seen that I’m not alone in my admiration for the Madonna song. Glad someone else likes it; it’s stuck in my head since the last time I heard it, in maybe 1987.

“Said I Loved You. . .But I Lied” - Michael Bolton

“God Only Knows” - The Beach Boys, but in this I suspect I’m hardly alone.

“One on One” - Hall & Oates (listening to it right now, in fact)

“Human” - Human League

“Killing Me Softly” - Roberta Flack; like The Fugees’ version too.

“Don’t Take the Girl” - Tim McGraw

“Didn’t We Almost Have It All” - Whitney Houston

ABBA’s “I’ve Been Waiting for You.” I damn near fell over when it was included on a Danish CD of their songs.

And finally it seems, my lonely days are through.
I’ve Been Waiting for You.

“On the wings of love…”
and
“I’ve had the time of my life…”

But can’t remember who sang either.

Jeffrey Osbourne for the first, Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes for the second.

“I’m Not In Love” 10cc
“Nobody Does it Better” Carly Simon
And [/hides head in shame] “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” Meatloaf [/hides head in shame]

“Making Love Outta Nothing At All” by Air Supply
“Le Bel Age” by Pat Benatar
“Love Is Love” by Culture Club

I’ll be over here in the “lamer stuck in the 80s” corner if you need me.

“I Get Weak” by Belinda Carlisle

“For All We Know” by The Carpenters

And…nobody mentioned “Your Song” by Elton John? I used to love that one…full of sappy goodness…

Faithfully and Open Arms by Journey. Sappirific.

Since I’m a child of the Eighties, I have to include Save a Prayer by Duran Duran - even though it’s clearly about a one night stand, we all thought it was a sniff beautiful love song.
