Until last week, most people had never heard of Sarah Palin or seen her face. Now when I hear her name, that first picture of her on the news is what I see. Since then, she’s consistently shown that same “look” to America. A big part of her look is the distinctive eyeglass frames that she wears.
I think she’s now stuck with those frames (or something very similar) at least until after the election. If she suddenly decided to switch to rounder frames or to contact lenses, her look would change tremendously. She’s spent alot of time getting America to familiarize itself with her and getting voters to latch onto her and what she brings to the ticket. A change in eyeglasses would reverse much of that because many people would subconsciously see her as different person. IMHO, she’s married to those frames until November, and possibly for even longer.
You mean the see-through solid rectangular frames? If we’re talking about just looks, she might want to switch to solid black frames a la Tina Fey. Of those women who look good in glasses, the rimless look rarely does them any favors. You often hear how glasses bring out the eyes, and rimless glasses are just too plain to help out. Contact lenses are even worse; women who are used to glasses end up squinting all the time. Solid black frames would change up her look without shocking anyone.
I’ve never noticed any habitual glasses wearers squinting in contacts, myself included. Perhaps you are thinking of those who take their glasses off but do not put contacts in.
Am I the only person who just doesn’t get her alleged attractiveness? Everyone on all sides seems to be talking about her being hot, and I see pictures of her or video of her and I’m just not getting it.

I agree. Maybe it’s just the 20-year age difference, but she does absolutely nothing for me. She’s not as ugly as many politicians, but that’s a pretty damned low bar. Don’t get me wrong, she’s not bad-looking, but she’s nothing special either.
True. Governor Palin is not Monica Bellucci hot, or even Campbell Brown hot. But people are comparing her to Senator Clinton, or Mrs. McCain, or ::shuddering:: Ann Coulter. That’s what makes her the RMILF.
Not to sound like a smug 22 year old bitch, but I don’t see a gigantic amount of middle aged women (minus hollywood type people) who: have a decent face, haven’t gotten unattractively overweight or just unfit in general, dress decently and not outdated, have pretty hair, and just generally look like they take time every morning to look nice (because most people don’t have the time, genetics, or money to look nice all the time). I’m sure I will be bombarded with other examples, but I am talking regular women you will never see on TV, just middle aged women in general. Just like most middle aged men aren’t attractive either. Or just most people aren’t unless you’re not picky. There are very few attractive people in politics - and who are women in the political sphere (not pundits on TV) that come to mind? No overly attractive ones probably. It’s all comparison to others and surprise that a female politician is kinda cute → hotness.
I’m not saying Palin is hot. I don’t aspire to look just like her when I am her age besides the fact she looks healthy and pretty trim. But she’s not ugly either, and standing next to John McCain she looks like a perfect 10 model.
Her husband is kinda cute, and looked like he had perfect white teeth. That’s always a nice quality.
myskepticsight, I understand your point in general, but I still think that far too many people are incorrectly making the terms “decent-looking middle-aged politician” and “hot” interchangeable. I certainly don’t mean to imply that I think she’s ugly; she’s not. But I work in the middle of downtown LA and see plenty of well-dressed, well put-together middle-aged women every day who I think fit the description “hot” far better than Sarah Palin.
I think they are erring when they call her hot as well, but I think it’s because:
they are shocked she’s not a dog
it’s easier to just say “she’s hot” than “well I think she is pretty attractive but…”
or they just have somewhat lower standards than others
It doesn’t matter to me what politicians look like, I still have a soft spot in my heart for Nader but he’s freaky looking - but remember the Nixon vs Kennedy stuff? That people who listened on the radio thought Nixon won and those who watched it on TV thought Kennedy did? If that hasn’t been debunked or anything, there’s some evidence looks help.
Until November? That’s two months! Big deal. Most people keep their same frames for years.
I am, shall we say, not a Palin supporter. But I like the glasses. The style is good on her. And as a glasses-wearing woman myself, I love that a fellow glasses-wearer is being called “hot.”
I keep expecting her to touch a small button on the frames, upon which a red force beam would issue forth and flatten Joe Biden. The noise it would make would be something like “thwaaaaaark!”
