Sarah Palin's Glasses

I’ve never worn glasses, but don’t people change glasses from day to day to coordinate with clothes or just for a change? I get sick of my black shoes on some days so I’ll wear brown, depending on the ensemble. Also, people sometimes take their glasses off. I don’t think that she has the flexibility to even do that in public.

Really? I had no idea that people did this. I’ve worn the same pair of glasses every single day for the past year. Prior to that, I wore the same pair of glasses every day for six years straight. It would not occur to me to have different pairs of prescription glasses around so that I could properly accessorize with my outfit.

I definitely know some very fashion-conscious people who change their glasses to match their clothing, but I am certainly not one of those people.

Then again, I wear black shoes every day, too.

I know very few people who can afford multiple pairs of glasses. They frequently run upwards of $300 for stylish designer frames. I managed to get a cheap-ass pair that were pretty cute…for $150, and that was just a simple reader. My dad and my husband both paid around $400 for theirs.

I was told by a cow-orker that a glasses manufacturer worked with Palin. Palin went through more than 300 different designs and hated them all. The manufacturer then created an original pair for her. The rumor is they cost around $700.

Kinda goes well with the down to earth, every woman’s outfits worn by Cindy McCain. You know, the $300,000 off the rack stuff.

Equally? $200 each?

Who gets to wear them on weekends?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Speaking for myself (a guy), glasses are a turn-on for me. Maybe because I wear them myself.
But I don’t find Gov. Palin particularly attractive.

I have pretty bad myopia so my glasses are expensive. Even with good eye insurance and cheaper plastic frames (yes I have “emo” frames) they are still $200+. I couldn’t afford prescription sunglasses this year.

I have a definite weakness for women with glasses. Dorothy Parker didn’t know everything.

I think the square glasses are ugly. I too think a Tina Fey type style would be better. Her voice is very midwestern housewifeish, so I don’t really find her that attractive, glasses or not.

When I bought my most recent pair of glasses, there were certainly signs up in Lenscrafters suggesting the idea of treating glasses like shoes. I declined–picking out one set is hard enough. (I have almost no fashion sense and am nearsighted enough to make judging what the frames will look like on my face problematic).

My Dad has two pairs he switches out, but it’s been almost a decade since he bought them and he would probably benefit from a visit to the eye doctor just to make sure his prescription hasn’t changed/check on general eye health.

As others have said, no–people don’t usually do that. If I had a lot of disposable income, I’d probably have a few different pairs, though. I think that would be awfully luxurious!!

As far as taking her glasses off sometimes–George H.W. Bush sometimes wore his and sometimes he didn’t. Not a big deal.

You know, that might actually make me like her a little bit. Especially if she flattened Bill O’Reilly instead.

p.s. Hey boys! My glasses are of the Tina Fey-ish style. :: preens ::

Those Tina Fey frames are getting old. They look good on Tina Fey and a handful of other women I’ve seen, but they’re everywhere and some of the results are not pleasant.

But lots and lots of women can. Am I wrong,or did HRC’s teary meltdown in the primaries not come at some town hall where some matron asked her a question about how she managed to keep her hair so well-coiffed?

Yes, it did, I find:

Way to use your fifteen minutes on the national political stage, lady.

Universal suffrage is not an unalloyed good thing.

Mst eyeglass-wearers I know, myself included, have no more than two current-prescription sets, some for the sake of having a spare, some to have one for sports/active use and other for more sedate ocassions. (Myself: 1 pair progressive-bifocals with ultralite lenses and Flexon frames, daily use and in front of the screen. One pair lower-priced distance-only, with clip-ons, for driving or outdoors activity in sunny weather – I hate having to cock my head down to see the directional signs. When Rx changes I switch the lenses, NOT the frames, have had one set for 5 years)

Palin’s glasses do fit her look quite well, they are sensible w/o being frumpy, yet not too fashiony either. And they will be a trademark, for sure.

For me it was the vid of her meeting up with Alaska Natl. Guardsmen in Kuwait firing off an M-4 at the range. That’s hot.
On another note: The Daily Gut had a post about Palin’s glasses recently. See here.

This is a chick who has 200+ bottles of nail polish, socks in all colors of the rainbow and at least a couple of dozen pairs of shoes. And the thought of having multiple pairs of glasses is absurd to me. I mean, it’d be NEAT to switch it up, but these goddamn glasses cost me a crapton of money. I can’t justify spending more on a second pair of glasses* just to update my look.

When I get glasses, I take a looooooong time to pick out frames, because I know it is an unchangable part of my look for at least 1-2 years.

  • Prescription sunglasses I’m toying with, because they serve another purpose (and no, the magnetic kind that fit my frames suck, because my frames are too small and let in bright light all around the sides :().

To me she looks like a character in an SNL sketch. It’s bizarre - she just looks like a complete caricature.

…if you know where to shop. Zenni Optical.

Yes it works. The glasses are top quality and cheap enough that you can try a different style without worrying about the cost. All you need is your prescription.

I have progressive bifocal lenses and glasses at the optometrists cost about 400-450. (that’s prior to insurance of course). I get eye exams every two years. When my prescription changes I’ll buy a pair there and another pair at Zenni.

I do change my glasses to fit my mood.

No. My glasses cost $500, and it isn’t because of the frames. I have very poor eyesight, and I have to pay for lenses that aren’t a quarter-inch thick. Glasses are not my fashion statement. And the only people that take glasses off are the ones that only need them for reading.
