sarcasm, name-calling and pit stuff

So… fucking… WHAT??

We’ve been through this before, bj0rn. This is an American message board. Therefore, everyone who feels the need to be understood here uses proper English. Nobody will make a big deal about a foreigner making a minor spelling or grammar error. Good Lord, I know I make some. Generally, people here are more than willing to explain certain terminology, phrases and words.

I’m sure the same goes for sarcasm and irony. Just ASK bj0rn, and you might get the explanation you need, and learn something at the same time!! I registered some 9 months ago. Although my English was pretty decent at the time, I can with certainty state that it has improved significantly over time - mostly due to posting to, and reading, this very board. If you’re so keen on “stomping ignorance”, give us a few clues that you are willing to LEARN, instead of the garbage you’re presenting us with in this thread.

I just HATE it when you go off again, ranting about how we should all take non-native posters into consideration. Bullshit! It’s an American board, hence the language is English.

All Ye who enter here better have a firm graps on it. Or at least show they’re TRYING.

Seriously, bj0rn. As secure as I am about myself and my reputation on this board, your inane raving about this so-called “International zone” always makes me want to explain myself - apologize, almost.

Knock this shit off immediately. It serves no purpose other than to make you look even more stupid.

Kaylas: congrats, mate. Hook, line and fuckin’ sinker

bj0rn:

Read the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, or even a Sunday-supplement article that covers the phenomenon of the books’ popularity in (at least) the UK and the USA, and you will gain an understanding of my reference to the Every Flavor Beans. Also: earwax is not a consumer product (at least not in any marketplace I want to frequent); it is a natural secretion of certain glands found in the ear canal. Putting it into one’s mouth is generally considered geekish behavior, and its own punishment – the stuff tastes horrible!

Coldfire, as much as I would like to bask in the praise of a master flamer such as you, honesty forces me to give you the opportunity to withdraw it. I was not deliberately offering bj0rn any kind of bait, and I must say that I’m disappointed that he’s being so absolutist in his attitude about stylistic features of the posts here that make some of them so much fun to read.

I guess on bjorns protest this is an Internationally viewable board, and we should accomodate every non English speaker, I suggest the following to accomodate everyone and make everyone happy:

1.) The board admins hire translators to translate every post into every world language (before bjorn wakes up and sees them each day).

2.) The board be viewable in the following scripts: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Myanmar, Lao, Thai, Tibetan, every script in India, all of the semitic scripts, Cyrillic, Church Slavonic, Armenian, Arabic, Georgian, etc.

3.) Every user forced to set their browsers to the Unicode setting.

4.) Everyone be fluent in Icelandic so we can explain sarcasm and irony to him when he misunderstands.

Just a few proposals to make bjorn happy.

</sarcasm> (just in case Bjorn doesnt see it in this post)

Dominus ex equo descendit, villamque intravit.

Well, surely, a master flamer I am not. Although I do take it as a compliment, at least in this case. Whilst reading your post, I was contstantly thinking to myself, “he can NOT be serious about this - he must know that this kind of post is completely wasted in a thread like this” (meaning: in any thread even remotely similar started by this poster). Hence, I took it to be sarcasm. If it wasn’t, then I can only applaude you for trying to help out someone - no matter how vain your efforts may prove, it is still decent of you that you tried.

Read without any sarcasm OR irony, whatsoever.

I’m sure bj0rn would like to take this as a fine example of how sarcasm can obscure the true meaning of a post. Or a lack of sarcasm, in this case.

Good morning bj0rn… take it away.

yes, thanks coldfire. and good morning to you too.

its the most peculiar thing. people seem to be looking for sarcasm and irony in posts, and accepting the truth given in a statement as exacly that(sarcasm/irony), rather than reading and understanding just what was written.

taking for example some of my writings:

in reply to:

as ironic as it may sound, i am really asking him if he would do that(forbit a 3rd grader from posting and if hes a teacher), and i am accually giving him advice on how to aquire a “no-capital-letter keyboard”.

its as simple as that.
call me gullible, but the moment you consider that to be stupid youve lost it(dont think i have to say what “it” is).

and while i could have understood kaylasdad99s post as pure irony and percieved it in an entirely different manner, i didnt. because that would have been assuming he was being ironic. such is the way of the written language when mixed with expressions from the spoken language.

i belive Esprix said it best; “Esprix, who is particularly thankful for the rolling eyes”.

bj0rn - good morning everybody…

You’re gullible.

And whil Kaylasdad99’s post obviously was sincere (since he said it was), it could be argued that a sarcastic tone was intended. Not an ironic one, a sarcastic one.

Please check all the numerous (and explained, even) examples of irony and sarcasm in this thread alone. That oughta give you some idea about the differences between the two.

How can we argue about this (I won’t go as far as to use the verb “debate”) when you can’t even tell which is which?

And why do you KEEP posting the same shit, while it is clear as the day that EVERYONE disagrees with you ALL THE TIME on your basic premises?

dearest coldfire:
being sarcastic is begin obvious. it wasnt obvious that kay was being “sarcastic” so that would mean he was being ironic, if of course such was the case.

explanations of sarcasm and irony(not mine):

im sure you are able to spot your contributes to this debate. and tell me now;

can you by using theese examples, decipher the differance and meaning of irony and sarcasm?

bj0rn - please tell me…

I can. The question is: can you?

bj0rn, you could afford to use the rolleyes, as well as the smile and the wink and the various other emoticons, as much as everyone else, especially considering that your posts are harder to understand than most, so therefore your intended meanings might also get misinterpreted more often.

Word to the wise.

Esprix

Ask the Gay Guy!

thanks esprix…ive noticed

i do try to use smileys and emoticons(eh…) whenever they are needed.

putting smileys all over the place can be confusing as well(i know thats not what you are saying).

  1. I would not be sanguine about a third-grader posting here in normal circumstances. The topics are too adult, too intellectual, and too devoid of Pokemon content for most of them to contribute. But, no, I would not “forbit” them. (cheap shot, I know)

  2. Yes, I am a teacher. I’ve mentioned that to you in saying that I will helpt to TEACH YOU how to write in recognizable English.

Bucky

how very nice, do begin…but know this, even if i will learn how to write english, i will propably still write in my own style. but perhaps you could help me with punctuation and stuff like that.

bj0rn - cheap shot…?? where, when??

I call them a facet of the richness of the English language. Who’s right?

This may be true in Iceland, but it sure as hell is not the case in the tradition of English/American literature. Either you’ve never read Swift (in any form) or Pope’s The Rape of the Lock, or you really believed Swift was advocating dining on Irish babies as a means of population control. bj0rn, just because you take everything at face values gives you absolutely no right to call some of the greatest literary minds in the Western world “liars” or “silly”. You are one man, and you have neither the power, duty, nor right to define the techniques of a language for all its users, or even for the small amount of its users who write on this board. Please, cease doing so.

Battles are won in nuance.

Babelfish, bj0rnese module:

you irrelevant. your opinion futile. bad argumentation and rationale do not help also not. no more talk shit about how people who do speak it speak english.

you also learn punctuation. and capitalization while we are at it. it will happen. resistance is futile.

coldfire - just one of us already not so as you bj0rn who are not yet

Coldfire, I know your head must hurt. I’ve only been reading this thread and my head is killing me (thanks bjorn). I’ll buy you a beer the next time I’m in Amsterdam.

Good to see some English posted in this thread… and hell yeah, we WILL have a few beers together whenever you’re in Amsterdam!

Yeah, we’re kind of having a bj0rn impression contest over in the “what is a great debate” thread. Everybody come on over.

I haven’t been on this board for very long but even I can plainly see that you, bjOrn, are very skilled at the art of talking (typing) until you accidentally stumble accross something intelligent to say…give it a rest dude…

BjOrn,
At no small personal risk to my sanity I will reply.
Yes I did read your comment on language ,or rather ,I saw a lot of words that almost but not quite resembled a meaningful topic for discussion.

I wish you would make your posts shorter so that they would be more easily digestable and the frequency of your copying of others quotes is difficult too because I have to go back to that post to examine its context.

I think my eyse are going to bleed now.

casdave: thats a good idea. smaller bites and less to chew on.

bj0rn - hehehe…
