bj0rn, just how stupid are you?
You said something about incorrectly used sarcasm and irony. I asked you to define the “incorrect usage” of sarcasm and irony. I specifically asked you to use examples.
What is so difficult about that? Don’t quote the same nonsense we don’t understand - EXPLAIN.
bjOrn
There’s a poster here who has a sig line that states:
(paraphrase) Winners never quit and quitters never win. Those who never quit and never win are idiots.
Sound familiar?

as much as i dont want to do it coldfire, here goes. take for example some of your own writing/reading. i am not going to quote any of your text, i am just going to refer to it, i am sure you will know what i am talking about.
how you misunderstood green bean is a good example on how sarcasm/irony are used incorrectly. yet while green bean claims he wasnt being sarcastic (afterwards) you (coldfire) somehow managed to understand his post as it was (sarcastic/ironic).
that my dear posterfriend is an example on how sarcasm can be used incorrectly.
[confusing text]
taking me for a second example: i sometimes write texts that could be considered sarcastic/ironic(people have asked), but by reading those posts as sarcastic/ironic ones the word that i am saying get translated into something they are not (which is the purpose of sarcasm…saying something that isnt “true”).
so if what i am saying is considered sarcastic it will be an incorrect usage of sarcasm, for the words are “true”.
bj0rn -
[/confusing text]
flyhalf: have you been doing alot of reading lately? i sure hope you have done a backround check on the subject you are referring to.
if you havent, shut the h*** up and do it(if you want to continue on present course).
if you have, start contributing something of value or shut the h*** up.
bj0rn - have a nice day…
(Beavis as Cornholio voice-on)
Are you threatening me?!
(Beavis as Cornholio voice-off)
bjOrn: BITE ME.
When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then you’ll begin to understand

no i wasnt. did it sound like i was??? if so, im terribly sorry about it. please do not consider what i said earlier as a threat of any kind. it was mearly a suggestion in your benefit.
bj0rn - not while you have thingies up your bunghole(if there were ever stupid cartoon characters…)
bj0rn, you ignorant slut.
You couldn’t be less right if you sat in an American car and did counter-clockwise donuts all day.
This is my impression of bj0rn’s recent exchange with Coldfire (the part of the Viking will be played by an English-speaking actor).
bj0rn: sarcasm and irony can be used incorrectly.
Coldfire: How? Give me an example?
b: I already did.
CF: Where?
b: When I said that sarcasm and irony can be used incorrectly.
But let’s put that aside for the moment and focus on what you said when you did get around to stating what I believe to be your point:
bj0rn, THINK BEFORE YOU FUCKING TYPE. Riddle me this, Odin: if GreenBean wasn’t using sarcasm to begin with, then how precisely does this constitute an example of the incorrect use of sarcasm?
Let me put it another way: if you are not using sarcasm in the first place, then how in tarnation could you possible be using it incorrectly?
And let’s even say that the adverse happened, and you used sarcasm and it was misunderstood as the truth. The error would not be in your usage of the sarcasm, but in the interpretation. If an artist tries to convey something through a work, and you’re too thick to get it, is it the artist’s fault? I hardly think so.
And, while I’m here, let me directly address something that’s been bothering me about this thread? Does anyone really use irony in their posts? It’s a literary device, not a conversational one. To have irony you need to present a conflict and characters. Unless I decide to write a short story or play and post it to this board, I don’t think you’re going to be seeing much irony in anyone’s posts.

Bjorn,
As I was scrolling through, I saw my name, so I read your post.
As many times as I read it, I couldn’t figure something out:
Did you think my “Message to Bjorn” was supposed to be sarcastic?
(This is a good example of the reason why using proper grammar is important. If strange grammar and sentence construction is used, sometimes it is difficult for the reader to understand the writer.)
Please answer!
i really dont understand why you all have bugs up your asses over bjOrn. i dont find him offensive at all i did note however that none of you called coldfire out when he went off without provocation. if it had been me saying the same things you would have been all over me like fags at a ball licking contest btw have you tried typing without caps or punctuation it is very soothing
Califboomer.
I refer you to the "Califboomer what gives?"thread elsewhere.

Fags hold ball-licking contests? Well, Esprix? Or should I go over to Ask the Gay Guy?

::Taking a deep breath and diving into the deep end, newbie-wise::
BjOrn - I became a fan of the Straight Dope by reading the various Straight Dope books. I was attracted by both the educational (content) and amusement/humor (presentational style)factors. I expected the STMB to be a continuation, or outgrowth of the books and columns. Lo and behold, that’s exactly what I found. I expected to find a certain amount of sarcasm and name-calling since those are, or can be, elements of humor.
I don’t recall seeing a post by you complaining about the content of the site, but rather, the presentation style of the posts. (Granted, I haven’t read every post you have made, and I’m typing with my asbestos undies on just in case you have.) It seems to me that this board is not meeting your expectations or needs for both content and style. I’m sure that there are plenty of sites out there on the Web that offer similar content in a totally serious style. I can’t direct you to any because I’ve rarely felt the need to use them (Nice places to visit but I wouldn’t wanna live there). If this board didn’t deliver the content I wanted, in the style that I wanted, I would go elsewhere.
My $.02.

Whoops, forgot this was the Pit.

Welcome to the SDMB (and the Pit), Billy! You’ve got the right idea, just use more hand gestures, and stomp your feet; oh, and it’s very important to foam at the mouth just the teensiest bit…
You’re probably right, about Bjorn’s agenda. I’m coming to the same conclusion myself, that Bjorn just enjoys bashing heads with Coldfire and others, and it really doesn’t matter what the topic is.
Don’t make yourself crazy trying to talk sense into anyone in the Pit. The sort of people who are capable of having “sense talked into them” are the sort of people who don’t hang out in the Pit (myself included!) Just make yourself comfortable (did you bring a blanket to sit on? Good. How about plenty of chips and beer? Excellent–I see you have indeed been observing us), and enjoy the show.

Please show us all where mr. Coldfire went off without provocation. Thank you. Scrote.
bj0rn: I think I get it now. But you’re really talking about misinterpreting sarcasm. In my case, I assumed sarcasm where there was none (Green Bean’s post). That’s my fault, and it cannot be blamed on sarcasm. Perhaps we should rephrase and make it: Sarcasm and Irony are easily misunderstood in writing as opposed to verbally. Therefore, it is inadvisable to apply them in message board postings.
Still a statement I strongly disagree with (even if I did misunderstand GB’s post, he explained it afterwards - plus, I rarely make the wrong judgement call on these matters, and I’m a ‘foreigner’ too, remember), but at least it’s a hell of a lot more accurate now.
bj0rn, I’ll leave you with this thought: if I thought you were really stupid, I would have started ignoring your posts long ago. But I’m quite convinced there’s actually a lot you could contribute to this board, if only you would show some effort by trying to be more coherent. And, of course, obey the given rules of capitalization and punctuation. That’s not a big sacrifice, bj0rn. It’s common decency. Nobody’s gonna blame you for a spelling error or a grammar mistake. They don’t blame ME for those either, and I’m sure I make lots of them.

CB, Bj0rn has been provoking Coldfire for months.
If you don’t know what you’re talking about, and as usual, you don’t, shut the fuck up.
Ignorant Fucking asshole. I’m done with you.
You can talk to yourself.
Wally7:
Thank God. I’ve never seen you say a kind word toward anyone. If you’re supposed to be one of the ‘revered members’ here, no wonder this board lacks simple civility.

Disclaimer: There is no sarcasm or antagonistic intent in this post. I am genuinely curious.
It has been stated that my post “A message for bj0rn” was mistakenly thought to be sarcastic. It was also stated that I “explained myself” after.
Why did you think that the post was sarcastic?
Where did I “explain myself?”
Thank you in advance for answering.
