You’ve come across the type IRL. Based on his apology post, I’d say he’s been trying on a persona. I think he’s now discovered that it’s not much liked. Let’s see if he changes; I think he will. But then I’m an optimist.
I’ve always thought that the word ‘troll’ is thrown about here far too much. Sometimes - perhaps often - it’s justified. But it’s sometimes it’s just shorthand for ‘I don’t like this guy.’
There’s not much new under the sun with regard to trolling, it’s true. If somebody apologizes and then immediately returns to their old ways, that’s different: we haven’t seen that here. We give people the benefit of the doubt when we can. After his first day on the board I was thinking stucky wasn’t going to be here very long, but we can wait.
I don’t think choie’s post requires any comment or action, really. I read most of those posts earlier, and I’m not just taking his comments on faith. It’s not impossible to be a retired cop and a former miner. Most of the other posts look like jokes and not actual biographical claims. The jokes were mostly crass, the masturbation one in particular, and they didn’t make anybody laugh, but failed jokes aren’t the same thing as trolling. I gave him a note for a post in MPSIMS that choie didn’t mention and I think he got the message. People sometimes make a bad first impression here and turn things around.
I think a good rule of thumb that would avoid a lot of these problems is simply to stay out of a pit for your first few months of posting. As he seems to feel that the Dope is filled with foul mouthed people who’ve spent a lot of time insulting him and calling him a Troll.
But i doubt he’s seeing much of that in any MPSIMS sorta threads. All he’s describing is the usual MO of the Pit, and the Pit Demons that live in here… I think more Newbie Posters should try to build a solid reputation over a month or two before even really trying to post in the Pit, if they want to be taken more seriously. I remember it was something like 3-4 months before I could even really address anyone in the Pit, because I was so intimidated by the denizens in here. It’s a whole 'nother breed of Dopers in here. And even then, I try to actually stay out of Pittings and prefer just my usually random comment here and there or my own opinions or interpretation, nothing that goes directly against another Poster or such.
The Pit can be a scary place, and not the best starting point for many a new Doper.
I still think if everybody didn’t get all worked up, it wouldn’t be as much as a perceived problem when posters like this come along. There’s a five letter acronym for it, but I can’t seem to recall what it is off the top of my head…
