SDMB All-Pro Fantasy Football league

Trade review matters when there might really be a controversy. Most trades are routine and no one has any reason to object. I don’t see the need to wait 2 full days for those. I thought this trade was one of those - it may look worse in retrospect because Williams put up 30 points, but it was essentially McCoy/Moats for Williams. Frosted Lightning likes McCoy, and reasonably so - there’s been a lot of talk of Westbrook missing the rest of the season with his concussions. Moats is a question mark - he got the start on a productive offense last week but it looks like a time share situation. Williams is good, but I myself wondered if his production would actually drop despite more carries because the defenses would be keying on him instead of Ronnie Brown. It seemed like a reasonable, uncontroversial trade for me so I pushed it through. If it had been one where I thought there was a significant chance of league veto, I would not have pushed it through like that.

But yes, for the majority of our trades, I don’t feel that the review process (defined as letting it sit for 2 days) is that important.

If someone makes their intent clear that they want to do something, but can’t, then I will honor it. If, as in your example, someone else completes a trade an hour before gametime and says “hey, you’re not around to do the trade, but we both agreed that we wanted to swap our players and start them in these spots”. Something sort of similar happened when someone e-mailed me monday morning saying their mobile device wasn’t setting the roster correctly but that they could e-mail me and tell me their intention of who to start. The e-mail was sent before the games started but I didn’t receive it until after the games - but given that their intentions were clearly stated, I was going to manually retroactively implement their wishes. But I guess they got their mobile device working, because their roster was set properly sometime between the e-mail and the start of the game. Not exactly the same thing, but it’s an example of implementing the intent of the owners even if I’m not around at that moment.

As far as retroactively implementing trades back to the moment they happen - it hasn’t been an issue (that I recall) this year specifically because I have pushed through trades before gametime all year long. I don’t think any processing trade has sat through a gameday, correct me if I’m wrong.

You act like this is the first time I’ve done this. I can see why it would see arbitrary and self-serving if that were the case. But I’ve done it like 8 times now, and you’ve even been involved in some, and had no objection. You were aware that I was doing this, and yet didn’t give any indication that you were against the practice. Suddenly, though, after it happened and coincidentally hurt your team then you decide to call shenanigans on the whole thing.

Pretty much this exact scenario happened before this year in the auction league. Hamlet had Marion Barber, I had Felix Jones. Barber was a late scratch that week with injury, so I proposed a trade to get him Jones on Saturday. He didn’t check his trades until Sunday morning, like 2 hours before gametime, but he accepted. Because he clearly intended for the trade to happen that week (he needed Jones), and I didn’t think anyone would object, I approved it.

I even said:

I had to make the call of pushing something through before gametime and making it useful, and risk people objecting to the non-standard procedure. I decided to push it through and that I would take some sort of punishment that the league deemed appropriate if I acted out of line. No one objected, no one even mentioned it. So I thought it was no big deal. I mean - it makes sense to me as comissioner that if two people come to an uncontroversial trade agreement before a game starts that the normal waiting period (which is very unlikely to result in any sort of objection) should be circumvented.

So I did that there, and no one seemed to have any problem with it (including you - you were in the league and could’ve spoken up if you felt this was inappropriate). I did pretty much the exact same thing here - the only difference being that the player traded end up putting up a lot of points against you, so now the objections and accusations fly.

I post it to the thread as early as I can. In most cases, I let a trade sit for a day. If there’s time pressure, I push it through faster.

In this particular case, while I did only give 2 hours for review, you (the person most likely to object) did not so do … or at least did not seem to do so, so I figured… well… I declared my intentions on what I was going to do with an explanation, and at least Jules and Omni read it with no objections, and so now game time is rolling around so I’ll approve this trade.

You’re right, I should’ve expressed my intentions with this change more clearly. I thought I had, but after I go back and skim the early portions of the thread it appears that I didn’t.

I did say this before the season started in the auction league:

But even though a lot of people are in the same leagues, I should’ve made specific mention of it in this league thread. I also didn’t specify that part of the point was for expediency.
I did later post about that in the big league

But still, I should’ve included a clear announcement in all leagues early on, including putting it into the commissioner notes within the league.

I did at some point in all leagues express a willingness to push through trades intended by both players to take effect before gameday.

Now you’re back to insulting me. You’re saying I enacted this policy to be self-serving, and only applied it to other people so that I could disguise the self-serving nature of it. No, I implemented the policy because I thought it was good for the the league - who wants to come to a deal on friday night or saturday afternoon and then say “oh well, we missed our window, the game is in less than 2 days, so we can’t get this deal done”? It’s an understandable restriction in public yahoo leagues full of strangers, but we don’t need that sort of inflexible restriction between us. The only possible downside to this policy is that a trade could go through in the name of expediency when, if it were to come under review, it would not pass. But you are not saying that’s what happened here. So what harm was done? Otherwise you are just trying to invoke technicalities as they suit you. “Sure, no one would have objected to that trade, but still, we have to stick to the sacred 2 day review period or shenanigans!!!” even though this has been something that’s happened several times before without objection from anyone. It would actually be the exception here if I didn’t push this trade through - all other trades this year that were made before the gametime of the players involved were pushed through before that game. Why should this one be the exception? Because you’re coincoidentally hurt by it? (And even then, like I said, if Ricky Williams had put up 3 points instead of 30, I wonder how strong the accusations would be).

You seriously don’t get why not objecting to the process, despite many chances, and then suddenly when it coincidentally hurts you declaring it loudly to be unethical seems extremely self serving?

Well, thanks for that. I really do try hard to be a good commissioner and so accusations like this are something that really bother me. I am willing to put myself at the mercy of the league if they do feel that I acted inappropriately. I’m willing to void the trade or at least remove Williams from my gameday roster this week and void the points, if that’s what the league feels I should do. I don’t think that’s fair because I don’t think I did anything wrong - but it’s more important for me to maintain league integrity and a sense of fairness than to win. So again, if anyone else has anything to say about this issue, please do.

Last day of trading. If anyone wants to throw me an offer for a better QB than Roethlisberger and something decent at WR, I’m willing to give up Ben and Wayne for them. Send an offer.

Only roster still requiring adjustment is Kiros.

I am looking for a nice day out of Wallace (PIT) against KC. Hopefully, the Chiefs don’t discover a defense somewhere in the basement of Arrowhead. I know its a risk starting him over Sims-Walker but I don’t feel like I am risking that much.

We’ve got some battles going on still. I lead Jammers by 23 points with the Philly D still to play, but he has Brent Celek and David Akers. He may end up getting hosed by scoring the 2nd most points of anyone and getting beat by the guy who scored the most. And then he’s going to suicide bomb me.

Taz beat Last Place by less than a point.

Ellis Dee needs to make up a 12 point deficit with Matt Forte and the Bears D against Frosted Lightning’s LeSean McCoy.

Gridbirds is 2 points behind No Use For a Name with Rob Bironas still to play, but No Use has Andre Johnson. Better hope Bironas pulls one of those crazy 8 field goal games out of his ass.

Kid A needs McNabb to score 3 points to beat Court Jesters, so given his luck he’ll go out with injury on the first play.

Isotopes has a 28 point deficit and DeSean Jackson and Chris Johnson left to play, while Omni still has Greg Olsen and Robbie Gould. Long shot, but if any two players can combine for that many points in one game, it’s Jackson and Johnson.

The playoff picture is forming. The current top 6 all have at least a one game lead on number 7, meaning that their fate is in their hands. If they can win out with 2 games to go, they’re in. Frosted Lightning has locked up a playoff spot, and probably the #1 seed. We have 4 people sitting at 6-5, and 3 at 5-6 that are still in contention.

Not everyone can win out, since the top 6 play each other over the next 2 weeks. But not as many games between them as you’d think, which is too bad - missed opportunity for drama.

This week Quentin’s Jammers and Isotopes have a critical matchup, but they won’t be dropping out of the playoffs yet. Even if they lose, and one of the 5-6 teams wins, they’re far ahead enough on tiebreaker scores that they won’t lose their spot. Really, it looks like Omni, Jammers, and Isotopes would have to lose both games to be at any risk of losing their spot, and they could potentailly sneak in anyway. Ellis Dee would improve his chances of making the playoffs dramatically with a win this week, since he can knock me down to his record and beat me with the tiebreaker. I’m currently a 32 point projected favorite, which practically guarantees my loss. Whoever loses between Court Jesters and No Use For A Name is pretty much out of contention.

The next week will be the final week of our playoff season. We may have several people still in contention at that point, but I won’t run through all the possibilities until I see how this week plays out.

OH GOD THE HUMANITY Ellis Dee has 3 GB players :frowning:

I get to watch Rodgers, Driver, and Grant put up 72 points on the Lions and about that many against my fantasy team. Gonna be a rough morning.

Okay, that’s enough.

Crap. Almost 60 points from Driver and Rodgers alone. And here I was thinking I might make the playoffs.

DAMN YOU DETROIT!

I woke up this morning, saw the game on TV, and immediately saw Calvin Johnson. What? He’s playing? Is that Matthew Stafford? What the fuck!?

I kid you not, Johnson caught a touchdown like two or three plays later. I nearly stuck my head in the oven right along with the turkey.Hopefully it doesn’t burn me, but it always does.

It’s a long shot, but if they keep stuffing Forte, Miller doesn’t do anything, KC keeps scoring, and Randy Moss goes nuts I could win.

It’s always good when you need 4 things to go right.

Dearest Randy Moss:

I have not yet asked any favors of you, but this week I feel that I make but a humble request: I need you to put up 12 recs/200 yards/3 touchdowns. This should not be too hard as you are great, your team will need to score, and you’re up against rookie corners. Thanks!

Well, we certainly have a meaningful week 13.

7 players have a 7-5 or 6-6 record. Frosted Lightning clinched, but everything else is up for grabs. Jammers is unlikely to lose given his 1 point victory giving him a game up on everyone, but everything else is up for grabs.

Omni is the lowest scoring of the top 8, but one game ahead of everyone. But if he loses this week, and No Use or Pancakes wins while outscoring him, one of them will take his playoff spot. If we both win, it’ll come down to score this week, since we’re 5 points apart in total score. To make it even more dramatic, No Use is playing Omni this week. So if he beats him, he’s probably in… except if I happen to win also and score more points than him.

Pancakes and No Use can get in with a win and a loss from Isotopes and Fanboys too, since we currently share the same record.

Pretty exciting finish this year. It would be even more exciting if Jammers didn’t have the indecency to win by 1 point, since it would’ve put even more spots up for grabs :stuck_out_tongue:

**SenorBeef **provided a nice rundown of how things have worked out, but there’s an even more interesting and crazy situation setting up that he didn’t notice.

Assume that everything shakes down in week 13 according to Yahoo’s projected scores at the moment. These projections are going to change and are obviously unreliable, but go with it. Each team wins or loses according to his current projections, and scores the indicated amount of points. That means Exploding Pancakes wins, moving to 7-6. NUFAN beats Omni, moving each team to 7-6. Frosted beats Gridbirds, pushing Gridbirds to 7-6. Isotopes beats Kid_A, going to 7-6. This sets up the single most interesting and compelling finish to any league, and I’m not exaggerating, in the history of fantasy sports.

Before the season, I was convinced that **Omni, SenorBeef, **and I had the three top teams in the league. Looking at it now, Beef has an explosive roster with as high a potential as anyone, and Omni still has top scorers at the important positions, and with Brady and Welker, unlimited potential. Scary lineups to face in the playoffs.

If I bench my entire team for week 13, I could deliberately sabotage each of them and knock both out of the playoffs.

I would drop to 7-6, the Fanboys would move up to 7-6. This sets up a seven way tie for second through eighth. Because the Pancakes and the Omnipotents have the lowest current scores of those seven teams, and don’t project to outscore the rest of the teams by enough to move up or down, they would drop to seventh and eighth, missing the playoffs. Since my score is higher than anyone’s by a wide enough margin, I could score zero in week 13 and still probably win tie breakers.

Granted, everything has to shake down exactly the way Yahoo projects… but has this ever happened before? Obviously, were I to do this and knock out my perceived two strongest rivals, I’d get dominated in week 14 or 15 and end up losing in the playoffs because the fantasy gods don’t like meddling… but it’s an awfully tempting scenario.

That’s true, and it would work to your advantage. It would be unsporting, I guess. I would appreciate if you didn’t.

My playoff scenarios (all require a win on my part)

  1. Any two of Isotopes, NY Fanboys, or No Use For a Name lose
  2. Omni loses, scores fewer points than me, and any one of those 3 lose
  3. Gridbirds loses and I outscore him by 58 points, combined with any of the above 2 scenarios
  4. Isotopes or Fanboys lose, and I outscore No Use by more than 5 (whether he wins or loses)

Are there any practical scenarios I’m missing?

These were the results of our draft from the beginning of the season. I went through and highlighted the fantasy players who are still on the teams that they were drafted to. I also placed our current records next to each team. No real reason behind this outside of my own curiosity. Looking at my team this weekend I noticed that I did not have many of the players I drafted. I then went through our draft results to compare other teams on draft day and now.

Looking through these results, I think its impressive that the 3rd place Gridbirds roster currently has 12 out of the original 15 draft selections on it. I only managed to maintain 5 players from my draft but 3 of those players were my first 3 picks.

Ahh, fuck. I forgot I had stuck Fred Jackson into my W/R slot. I didn’t intend to keep him there, but I forgot that game was tonight. Now Pierre Thomas is gonna put up 75 points…

Oh well. Go Fred!

I’m right there with you. I actually remembered who was playing but since I pulled most of my Jets off last week I was confident. Once the game started I remembered pulling the Jets defense off in a couple leagues, which would have been a great start against Buffalo. Sure enough, they only give up 10 points and get sacks and picks galore. The last two plays of the game were a sack and a pick just to rub it in.

That’s okay, San Diego will put up at least 20 for you since you can always count on defenses completely fucking me sideways (I have the second highest average scored against me by opposing defenses).

I kinda felt like I was getting reamed by everyone’s defense this season, but I didn’t think it would be so thorough when I tried to confirm my suspicions. 2 of the top 3 highest scores by a defense were against me. It feels oddly fitting since I was the one who voiced the most concern over upping the defensive scoring before the season, and at least once before I’ve mentioned how it’s always a defense and a kicker that fucks me. The fantasy football gods strike again!

I’m really glad I didn’t have anyone from the Thursday night game. I completely forgot about it.

My very own mancrush Jerome Harrison put up 25 points while I had him on my bench :frowning:

My playoff picture got a little weird. Towards the end I wasn’t sure if I should be rooting for Omni or No Use For A Name. Omni is ahead in record, but 1 point in total points behind me, so if I win and he loses, assuming I outscore him, I’d get in ahead of him. But it’s a similar story with No Use, except I’m 5 points behind him instead of 1 point ahead, but we have the same record so I could get in by outscoring him even if he doesn’t lose.

No use is behind by 11 points with Harvin/Ray Rice left to play, so he will probably win. There’s actually a small margin where I end up getting in ahead of both of them… if No use beats Omni, but I manage to outscore him by 5 points, I will beat both of them on a tiebreaker. Assuming Mason Crosby gets his projected score, it would be a crazy slim margin, he’d have to beat Omni by like 2 points or less. The more Crosby scores, the bigger the window.

Isotopes has a 27 point lead over Kid_A with Longwell still to play and Kid_A has Sidney Rice and Greg Jennings. He’s unlikely to make up the gap, but him winning would almost guarantee me an in.

Jammers has a 32 point lead, plus Peterson and Boldin, over Ellis Dee, who has Rodgers, Driver, and Grant to play. It’s not likely they’ll generate enough points out of that one offense to make up the gap.
