SDMB Diplomacy 2004. Shall we play a game?

There’s a long article about Diplomacy in today’s Washington Post Magazine. Definitely worth a read. Most of the article is about a FTF tournament, but it also mentions the online game. The origins of the game also get some significant play, with some quotes from Allan Calhamer, the guy who invented Dip back in the 1950s.

A Ruh-Hol

I’m fairly sure we all knew that before you even ordered it.

Well, I could’ve sent the brave soldiers of Ruhr into the horrible, despicable slave mines that France is known to operate … but I don’t think they would’ve liked that. And by they I mean my soliders, I’m sure France is missing the income more slaves would’ve brought … oh well.

Nate -

On the Front page the due dates are given for Fall 02 is “Monday, November 22, 2004” and Winter 02 is “Wednesday, November 23, 2004” whereas on the latest page, you state: “Fall 1902 Orders due: Tuesday, November 23, 2004 7AM Eastern US Time
Winter 1902 Orders due: Tuesday, November 30, 2004 7AM Eastern US Time”. Could you clarify these dates?

Also, why such a long delay until Spring 03 - only due 8th December?

Many thanks
Grim

I don’t know if it’s reflected in the schedule, but our Thanksgiving holiday is next week. Many people travel and are away for the whole week.

Yep, I just had the wrong week on the front page. It’s fixed now. Next Tuesday is Fall and the following week will be winter due to the holiday and it’s affiliated travel.

This sure is an odd-looking game.

Honestly, I hadn’t. I hadn’t even considered the implications of retreating to an open SC.

Some GM I am.

Thanksgiving in November? Who’d of thought about that? Crazy Yanks … :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d like to request some sort of Christmas break - I’m flying to the other side of the country and I’m not sure how often I’ll be able to get net access.

Also, is it possible to put the Summer advances onto the website?

You think that’s crazy. We’re right around 80 F all this week, and no real reason to believe it won’t continue into next week*. So we’ll very likely take the kiddies down to the beach for Thanksgiving. A little surf and sand, then turkey and the trimmings. It’s the proper way to do it. And don’t worry about your Christmas holiday, we’ll look after those SCs for you while you’re away. You can trust us.

*Silly English weather.

Retreats will be posted when I get home tonight. Gimme a break.

Yes, a Christmas break will be declared. Everyone send me your schedules.

OK, lets make this a cute little bulleted list.

[li]First of all, could we tweak the schedule a little bit to make the upcoming year complete before Turkey day? Assuming no one is falling off the map prior to Wednesday it seems would should be able to nudge the game forward a little to get Winter builds (disbands for the English and Italians of course) out before the long weekend.[/li][li]I’m not doing anything too thrilling for the long weekend so no need for special scheduling on my account.[/li][li]I find the big warning of the Englishman’s plans to “fly to the otherside of the country” for the big holiday weekend somewhat amusing. I suppose I’d better brace you all for the incertainties of my big day trip to West Lafatyette. Crazy Yanks indeed…;).[/li][li]This is a crazy little board we’ve got set up. Not quite as wierd as the Jackson Pollack that was created in the last game we played (I forget the name and Cat23 number), but still worthy of outside commentary. My kingdom for GoAlien’s return.[/li][li]Hey Russia, wahhuh?!?[/li][li]Hey Italy, worst kept secret ever![/li][li]Hey England, hope you like the taste of your own bile.[/li][/ul]

Thats all for now, I have lots more to blather about, but I’m expected to work at least a little here today.

I’d agree with this, over-long gaps between moves make for inefficient negotiations in my view… I’d also welcome a Christmas break and will email you some dates.

Secrets??!? Moi?!??

Grim

Actually, it’s me that’s flying to the other side for a while next long weekend I get - which just so happens to be for Boxing Day. I didn’t see Shibb talking about flying. Are you getting us confused?

As to your second point … are you still confusing us? I just want to know if I have to sample my bile …

Ah crap!

Englishman, Canadian…close enough.

Remember, as always, I’m an idiot.

For clarity, Lockz, I had it in my head that you from England IRL. So when I read the the “flying across the country” line, it seems kinda funny…considering the country ain’t all that big and all. The fact that you’re Canadian just makes me look retarded.

As for the Englishman who will be tasting his own bile…well that’d be Shibb. I probably owe Germany a reach around right about now.
