SDMB Football Mock Draft

I’m not suprised he was still left, Omni. But I think he’s a good value there. Antsports has him picked at an average of Round 8 in a 12 team draft, earliest pick at 6, latest at 20. However, I’m not sold on him, and would have taken him a couple other WRs for my second receiver. Could have a huge ceiling, though.

When will the madness end???

Exactly one year from today.

Munch, you perv!

Munch, I think a big reason Rogers is being drafted that low on average is that he’s not listed in the top 32 WR list which is the default. I bet things are alot different when the drafts go live and players are ranked more accurately.

jones just went to tampa. with pittman going to jail, the jones pick isnt bad at all.

I dunno, mrchan. Jones was butt-awful in Arizona, and that was in a pure HB based offense.

With TB being a FB/HB combo based offense, Alstott being a proven commodity, (and the fact that JONES SUCKS  ) , I’m not sure I would want to touch him this year. I guess we’ll have to see what develops in camp. He may be worth a late round gamble, but there are still RBs availble now in this draft that I would want ahead off him.

Here’s the Jones deal.
He did suck in ‘Zona, but the Cardinals as a whole were terrible. I think we’ll see a truer measure of Jones’ ability now.

Munch: The Herald article was about what I expected. It seems as though Fanball is trying to read something into the article that isn’t there.
On the whole, I trust a local paper more than, for example, Krauss publications. The magazines play a lot of “I told you so” games, but they don’t bother to mention their errors. Remember Aaron Hayden of the Chargers?

Regarding the Olsen twins, you’re just thinking what I thinking.

Where’s Hamlet?

Maybe in the beginnings of a three day bender?

One can only hope.

I’m still predrafted for 8 and 9.

Is mrchan in the house?

Any of you guys on computer control want to make NurseCarmen’s next picks?

Apparently the Nurse and the inscrutable mrchan are both on autopilot now.

Pickings: slim.
Likelihood of finding value this late: low.
I’m hoping this will be the year that Rob “Cannon Arm/Rock Brain” Johnson decides to throw to his own teammates.

One pick left and we can wrap this thing up. Not a whole lots of value this late in the game, I’m curious if the real drafts will continue to be as RB heavy as these drafts.

Wonder if it’d be a good idea to set up a league that had a roster of only one RB spot and one RB/WR spot and 2 WR spots instead of the usual 2 and 2. Good RBs are so tough to get that the one guy who has 2 great ones is really pretty unbatable. Seems to place a unfair value on drafting early. Whatever the case, I’m starting to get excited about this season already.

Unless some late round 16 picks really wow me into changing my mind, here are a few thoughts thoughts:
Shibb–You have 6 RBs, and only one of them is an unquestioned, non-splitting-time starter. However, getting Jerry Porter in late 12 is good stuff.

Wadda – Iknow that after round 12 or 13 most of these picks are throwaways, but I think that Baltimore has announed that Chester Taylor is the #2 behind Jamal Lewis, so a later round gamble may be better spent on Taylor. I like the late Tai Streets pick. He’s very low on a lot of boards and with JJ stokes gone, Streets has many of the pieces of a player waiting to bust out.

WL – the Mcnabb/Deuce/George 1-2-3 is a nasty core, but I’d be a little nervous of those WRs. Is Qadry Ismael even playing this year? I think Reggie Wayne is going to work hard to have to lose the #2 job in Indy.

Knumb Knuts – getting Gannon in round 5 is highway robbery.

My team: The one thing this mock proved to me is that I do not want to use the strategy I used here in any of my leagues this year. There’s something about takin a QB in the first three rounds that leaves me feeling empty elsewhere. Unless I can get someone to fall into my lap (McNabb or Vick in Late 3) then I will not do it again. I think the teams with the QBS a step down (the Gannons/Warners/McNairs/Brooks crew) are going to wind up with better all around teams. Or at least, that’s been the case in every mock I’ve participated in so far.
Best teams: Knuts, Toes, and Mr Chan.

I’ll chip in some thoughts since the draft is now officially over and I’m trying to avoid raiding my fridge late at night right now.

Shibb, you’ve got an excellent WR core. Porter and Moss in 12 and 16 is excellent, Porter is probably one of the top 3 steals of the draft. You’ve got real problems at RB sonsidering how many picks you spent there, and as great as Dillon is, he won’t score as much as the other first rate RBs on better teams. I’m not sold on Brooks and Ramsey would have been available as a FA. There are better TEs than Mili still available IMHO, taking him in 9 baffled me. You have Cincy for the defense without Spikes, ouch.

Munch, you’ve got a somewhat hodgepodge team. Alexander has proven to be somewhat streaky, and might leave you wanting more from a #5 overall. Garner scores, but can also be a feast or famine guy in that offense, the rest of the RB core isn’t even certain to make it our of training camp with a spot on the roster. I’m exaggerating, but its a motley crew. Moulds is the only lock WR considering Price is in a new city. Stallworth is a great value in 11, another top 3 steal. Gonzo is real nice, and the Redskins D is decent. Excellent late round QB moves, both Green and Brady are solid starters. Points for having a guy named Taco…is there even a scouting report on this guy?

Wadda, sorry man, but wow. Might be the thinnest team in the league. Garcia puts up nice numbers…but what now with no Mooch? TO might melt down at anytime, and the RB situation could hurt his productivity. You have 2 more QBs, that is all. Lewis should be good, but he’s a reach in round 2 with some question about how strong he’ll come back in a weak offensive system. Playing time will be a question for all the other backs. Harrison’s great, hopefully Peyton will bounce back and make him a superstud. The other WRs are very solid, but you lack depth. Carolina is a nice pick, but they probably would have been there in 11 or 12.

WL, was stuck on autopilot for the last several rounds, not your fault, and frankly it didn’t hurt you too much. Love McNabb in late 2. The other QBs are throwaways and the result of that server issue. Wasted two picks. Deuce and Eddie are smooth and a great core. The other RBs (Jones = Trung) are good backups, though round 6 was a little early. It doesn’t appear you took any WRs, not sure what you used your 4, 5 and 7 picks on. Good value with the Miami D in 8.

Hamlet, another computer casualty. Manning might be great, but it might have been a slight reach. Good first 3 RBs except the SF situation is always a pain. Nothing remarkable at WR, and you’re real deep at TE. Too bad about that D. The computer is responsible for half this team, and it shows.

mrchan, I’ve gotta disagree with mouthbreather, I’m not sold on this squad. McNair’s a nice value in 6, Holmes is a big question mark and you have Johnson for insurance. But that means you really ony have 3 RBs and you can stick a fork in Stewart. Weak. Solid WR core, but it probably won’t carry the team. Taylor was a huge reach and the defenses are pretty iffy. I see alot of holes and gambles.

Bergen (Happy Scrappy), is thin at RB and WR, never a good sign. He chose to go with backups at TE, PK, and D. Not sure if this is good or bad, but since both players at each position is very good, it’s probaly not too terrible. At the very least he has excellent trade bait to fill in at RB. If the primaries at RB and WR were better I’d like this team more, but Edge is off a bad season, Emmitt is 93 years old, and who knows when Wheatley will play or not. Brown is aging quickly and losing alot of balls to Porter. Coles and Conway are in a new city, always iffy for a WR. Rob Johnson was a garbage pick, even in 13. I see alot of trouble.

SDMB, formerly NurseCarmen, was picked by committee. The primaries at all the positions are very good. Culpepper is a big value at 4, Faulk and Bennett make a nice 1-2 punch, and Horn, Chambers and Heap combine to make a excellent pass catching trio. Between the two defenses one is likely to be top notch. The depth is pretty pathetic after that, Flutie, Dayne and Betts don’t have much worth. All things considered I’d call this one of the strongest teams though.

Knumb Knuts, I like this team a whole lot. I’m skeptical on Gannon coming back big again this year, but at 5 its a worthwhile gamble. Great top RBs, Pittman was a mistake, but Shipp and Brown could end up being nice finds. Boston and Rice should be no brainers. The depth is balanced, and there aren’t any standouts, but its a well rounded team without a single achillies.

Camel Toes, another team with tons of UPside! The top overall pick payed off here. LT is gold, and Fraud is solid as a second RB, though it might be a litle bit of a reach there. Brees is a great pickup in 11, huge steal, and the perfect backup for an iffy Warner secured by Bulger as a #3. The RB depth is a problem. The WR core is suprisingly good top to bottom, and there weren’t any big gambles. The Ravens D tops it all off nicely. Very nice team if Taylor stays healthy.

Pittmans Body Shop (mouthbreather), I like the first stringers here. Vick could be a goldmine and you’ve got solid backups if he gets hurt. I love Portis, and Dunn might come up big You’ve got a third RB who’s at least likely to start the season as the go-to-guy, rare in this draft. Moss and Holt are a great combo, and you got value with your K and D late. The only hole is at TE, and that’s tolerable. Probably a top 3 team.

Lasty, I’ll run down my team.

I’m pretty satisfied with my roster, I didn’t like where I drafted. The 9th spot seems like the worst one, you don’t get the benefits of getting the very best players, nor do you really get to make back to back picks at the end of the first round either. I love Bledsoe in 5 and Greise in 11 is a great value IMHO. I think I have the strongest 3rd RB in the draft, early reports are that Bettis looks awesome in camp. Green and Tiki should put up excellent and consistent numbers, especially with Dayne out of the picture. Rhodes and Fuamatu-Ma’afala aren’t locks to play much, but if things fall right they could be big contributors on those teams. I’m a little thin at WR, but I think every one of them will be consistent producers. Smith is a stud, and Easy Ed is a huge steal in 14. If the young guys play well it’s a bonus. Great D, K and TE. The only real flaw is that I really dislike most of my players from a fans perspective. My first pick was a Packer, gag. I have never liked Pittsburgh or Miami, and I can’t stand Denver under Shanahan. Bledsoe’s the only real likable guy on this team, too bad. However, from a talent standpoint I’d compete for the top 3 here.

Well, I was picking 11th, you know! So I really can’t argue with your assessment. Dillon was about the best that I saw at that pick (were the first 10 picks all RBs as well?) Both Mili and Cincy defense were about fifth or sixth on my list of choices at those positions (since I was predrafting I did a lot of things positionally vs best choice at the moment). I think there were runs or mini-runs before those choices.

I’m not terribly up on TEs beyond who I see as the top three or four, they seem interchangeable at that point. Who would you see as better? As for the Bengals D, that was based on a couple of things: 1) Marvin Lewis 2) Bengals actually had a solid D, albeit with Spikes, 2 years ago. I figure you add the first and second point, and there’s a chance they could have a good defense this year. It’s a crap shoot, but everything else left by then was mediocre.

In my defense, I’m testing my “dead cat bounce” or “redemption” theory of fantasy ball, depending on how optimistic or pessimistic you are. I think that I’ve got value at all positions. Did I make a few mistakes drafting? Sure I did.

But I like Emmitt. I’m not sure that the Cardinals will have the personnel or coaching aptitude to do anything but ride him for one or two more seasons (especially given their lack of Plummer, who, btw, I like very much in Denver’s system). Couple that with Emmitt’s desire to prove his worth, you get a decent pick in the end.

My WR quandary is a little bit more hairy, but I still think that I have enough to get the job done. Then again, I am a reasonable pup and will listen to offers.

Hopefully all you other guys have your stars come down with unmanageable cases of OCD and remain locked in their rooms, rocking in a corner and muttering to themselves, until Week 13.
