Sdmb nfl mock draft

19 (19) Texans select Earl Thomas, S, Texas.
20 (20) Falcons select Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan.
21 (21) Bengals select Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma.

The Patriots (Omni) are on the clock. Packers (me) on deck, Eagles (Jules Andre) next and Ravens (unclaimed) after that.

Hamlet,
do you prefer PM’s or emails to get any picks we want to send you.

SFP

PM’s are much more likely to be seen quickly, so use those. Thanks.

After entertaining the idea of addressing the offense the Patriots decide to wait until their pleathora of 2nd round picks to go there and take the best remaining defender on the board.

New England Patriots
22) Sergio Kindle - OLB, Texas

Though there were several players at this slot who’d have been fine, Thomas fills a very big hole on the Texans D. The Texans were atrocious at giving up big plays last year. They haven’t had the kind of center fielder Thomas should turn into, since they had Darren Sharper many years ago. I was very surprised to see Thomas last this long, resigning myself before the draft to taking Wilson from Boise State. The fifth round pick to hop up one spot may have been silly, but I was worried the Falcons would scoop up Thomas instead.

Of course, I was excited too about Reggie Nelson when he was in the draft, and he seems to be a bust. Hopefully Thomas will be a lot better than Michael Huff…

Speaking of the Texans defensive backfield…

The Raiders trade Nnamdi Asomugha and the later of the Raiders’ two 5th-rounders (158) to the Houston Texans in exchange for the Texans’ 2nd and third round picks (51 and 81).

And now, the defense is mostly done. People in Houston seem to be antsy about the repeated 8-8 seasons. Though this is overpaying for Asomugha, McNair can afford it, and I think the Texans need to do something like this to give their season ticket fanbase some red meat. Cross fingers that Slaton will be O.K. next year…

Packers select Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers.

Eagles, by proxy, select Maurkice Pouncey, OG/C, Florida

Ravens select Jared Odrick, DT/DE, Penn State

Cardinals select Sean Weatherspoon, OLB/ILB, Missouri

That brings us to:

1 (1) Rams - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
2 (2) Lions - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska.
3 (3) Buccaneers - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
4 (4) Redskins - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
5 (5) Chiefs - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
6 (6) Seahawks - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
7 (7) Browns - Joe Haden, CB, Florida
8 (8) Raiders - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
9 (9) Bills - Brian Bulaga, OT, Iowa
10 (10) Jaguars - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
11 (11) Broncos - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama
12 (12) Dolphins - Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee
13 (13) 49ers - Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
14 (14) Seattle Seahawks - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
15 (15) New York Giants - Taylor Mays, S, USC
16 (16) Tennessee Titans - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech.
17 (17) 49ers - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
18 (18) Steelers - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
19 (19) Texans - Earl Thomas, S, Texas.

27 (27) Cowboys
28 (28) Chargers
29 (29) Jets
30 (30) Vikings
31 (31) Colts
32 (32) Saints

The Cowboys (Grey Ghost) are on the clock. The Chargers (Roland Orzabal), JETS (unclaimed), and Vikings (unclaimed) follow. I’m done for the night, so if anyone wants to pickup the unclaimed teams and pick for them, I’m good with that.

For Pick 27, The Dallas Cowboys take Bruce Campbell, LT, Maryland.

Ouch…several guys I had my eye on have been taken–Dan Williams, Sergio Kindle, Sean Weatherspoon. Not sure I’ll be around when the Saints are on the clock, so I’ve pm’d my proxy list to Hamlet.

Can anyone tell me what all of those “compensatory picks” are for?

Who made this pick? I ask because this would be like the Dolphins spending their first rounder on a #1 receiver. It’s just plain silly.

Not only do the Giants expect to get Kenny Phillips back at 100% – he’s a stud when healthy – but they also traded for Antrelle Rolle to pair with him. If Phillips is healthy that will give the Giants the best pair of safeties in the entire league. In addition to that, they also brought in the ironman veteran safety Deon Grant via free agency, who is currently boasting a 144 consecutive starts streak.

As far as positions go, the Giants couldn’t possibly be more stacked than they are at safety. So drafting a safety in the first round would be, as I said, silly.

Here are a couple articles discussing the current state of the Giants safeties. Note how the second one mentions how the Giants really want to get Grant on the field as much as possible, even to the point of running 3-safety formations. Meaning that Grant isn’t some scrub stopgap, but rather a legitimate starter just in case Phillips can’t go.

So yeah, not taking a safety.

heh, well, this isn’t quite as silly as drafting a safety in the first round, but it’s close.

Who is making the decisions for the Giants?

Just for the record, in this mock with McClain gone the Giants would have taken Weatherspoon. Which means (of course) that they wouldn’t have needed to trade Boss for a LB.

In a nutshell, if you lose quality players to free agency and don’t bring in the same amount of quality in free agency, you get the difference back in compensatory picks. As you might imagine, they have formulas to calculate all this.

Here is a complete rundown of this year’s compensatory picks.

I’m sorry you didn’t sign up in time to get the Giants. There are other teams that could use your flawless acumen at drafting. The JETS were recently claimed, but the Colts, Chargers, and numerous other teams still need Owners.

If. I probably wouldn’t have drafted Mays for the Giants either, but I don’t think it’s not so far fetched as to qualify as “silly”.

I would rather have Mays playing out of position at LB than Sean Weatherspoon at 15. Weatherspoon, to me, could develop into an OK LB in the right system, but he’s not versatile and not a gamechanger. But to each their own.

The Chargers are on the clock. I have proxies/picks for the rest of the teams to finish round 1. When Roland makes the Chargers pick, that will put the Rams (Omni), Lions (Least Original User Name Ever), Buccaneers (garygnu), Chiefs (unclaimed) and Eagles (Jules Andre) on the clock. Get those proxies in.

Here’s the Draft Order for Round 2, with trades:

I did. Best player available. Also, I have no confidence in the available 1st-round projected LBs after McClain. Hence, the trade for Adalius Thomas, who is on the outs in NE, but is a proven top LB, which I can’t say about anyone the Giants could have taken.
I would have taken CJ Spiller if he was available too, so go ahead and criticize that as well.

No word from the Chargers (Roland), but I want to keep this moving. I think the pick for them comes down to a couple people, so I’ll just pull the trigger for them.

Chargers select Ryan Matthews, RB, Fresno State.

Jets (claimed by Grey Ghost) select Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU.

Vikings select Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers.

Colts select Charles Brown, OT, USC.

Ghost beat me to Hughes. Griffen was second on my list, figuring the Saints can use a DE to replace Grant (I think we lost him in free agency). I’m kinda hoping my third choice falls to us in the second round, but I doubt he will…
