Sdmb nfl mock draft

1 (33) Rams - Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
2 (34) Lions - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida.
3 (35) Buccaneers - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
4 (36) Chiefs - Brian Price, NT, UCLA
5 (37) Eagles - Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
6 (38) Browns - Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
7 (39) Raiders - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State

That takes us to the Chargers (BoltEater standing in) with pick 40. I’ll be back tomorrow morning.

Thought the conventional wisdom was that Jacksonville really needed Tebow so they could start filling seats? I could see them wasting a 2nd rounder on him (and it would be a waste, IMO) I don’t doubt his heart and drive, but I don’t see him having the delivery or arm speed to make it as a QB in this day and age, nevermind having to learn how to read pro coverages and adjust to pro speed like every other rookie QB.

Think the Cowboys might make some noise on draft day too. I haven’t followed this draft class that closely, but would it be worthwhile for the Cowboys to trade up to the Okung/Williams area or will they get pretty much the same bang for the buck by drafting Campbell or Anthony Davis? Also, do you all think that Marion Barber’s on the trading block, and if so, how much could they get for him?

Well, with the GM out of town, I will humbly step into Roland Orzabal’s shoes for this pick and hope he doesn’t fire me for incompetence. With LT and Jamal Williams gone, though, the Bolts need a running back and a “Power Pig” nose tackle in this draft, so this seems like a layup.

With the #40 pick in the draft, the Chargers select Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama, and desperately hope that he doesn’t eat Philip Rivers.

See my comment above re: hack sportswriters.

The idea that a team would draft a player to fills seats is complete nonsense. Jags fans might come to the stadium to see Tebow play if they are Gators fans too, but that bump would only last for maybe a game or two. If Tebow sucks in the NFL initially that buzz will die almost immediately. The NFL is not like any other sport in that star power does almost nothing to drive attendance. There are just too many other people on the field and players are too homogenized by the helmets and pads. The only way the Jags would draft Tebow early is if they are convinced he’ll be great. The only way he’ll put butts in seats is if he is actually good and wins games, and it’s debatable if he’d put more butts in seats than another rookie QB from say Notre Dame who wins games.

I don’t think anyone will ever trade up that high for a OT. The reason OTs are such popular choices in the first round is because they tend to live up to the scouting reports more reliably than any other position. However there generally isn’t a huge gap in talent between the first and second tier.

If the Cowboys moved up to get one of the studs they’d have to spend a ton in real money and draft capital. There’s almost zero chance that Williams or Okung are that much better than Davis or Bulaga. However, if Williams, Bulaga and Okung come off the board really early and the Cowboys are in a position where they worry that none of the top OTs will be left they might move up. The difference between OT#1 and OT#4 isn’t worth trading up for, the difference between OT#4 and no OT is.

All in all, I think there’s zero chance that Campbell is off the board before the Cowboys pick. No idea if they like him or not, but he’ll definitely be available for them. The most likely scenario is for the Cowboys to trade up to, say, pick 22 to grab the last of the first tier OTs before the Packers pick.

That was the third guy on my proxy list. Even if he doesn’t make the tackle, a RB loses at least half a step going around Mt. Cody.

Stepping up to draft for the Bills.

The Bills decide that the QBs aren’t worth drafting here and avoid the trap by taking another lineman.

Buffalo Bills
41) Rodger Saffold, OT - Indiana

In taking back-to-back Tackles in the draft the Bills have solidified their line and given themselves a chance to improve immediately. The running game should thrive with Lynch and Jackson behind two Big Ten maulers. Saffold projects to be the choice on the right side and has the mix of skills to run and pass block much like Bulaga.

I’m gonna jump in to the Commish role for a little bit here to accommodate anyone who’s up late and bored tonight like me. Here’s the updated draft from start to finish as of now. I added the Dopers name next to the picks for the ones I’m aware of, I think that’s interesting to see. Maybe Hamlet will fill in the blanks next time around for those who he proxied for.

I believe garygnu is on the clock.

I missed this comment earlier, the Saints signed former Bears’ DE Alex Brown to replace Grant. Seems unlikely they’ll spend a high pick at that position. I’d have picked Brian Price or Daryl Washington.

Second Round
10 (42) Buccaneers - Daryl Washington, LB, TCU

Wow, really? After Ron Dayne?

If you really don’t think the other LBs are first round worthy, at least go wirth a team need like DT.

Save the smarmy sarcasm. I expressed interest back on April 7th to pick for the Giants. Looks like you did post a link to the signup thread, though I think I missed it by virtue of it being the last post on a page.

Anyway, my complaint isn’t that I didn’t get to pick for the Giants. My complaint is that the Giants pick was apparently given no thought to team needs at all.

It’s more farfetched than “silly.” I was being kind. It would be like the Jets taking a RB with their first rounder. It just wouldn’t happen. Big Blue already brought in two starting safeties this offseason; drafting a third when you’re already expected to get a third back from injury is just plain nuts.

I’m pretty sure you’re alone in this attitude. “Mock” is short for “mock-up”, not “mockery.”

I was KIDDING.

When I picked Ryan Matthews in the first round for the Chargers, I thought they could wait for either Price or Cody in the second round, and lo and behold one of them was there. It worked out. Although I do think Cody has huge bust potential (and huge food bills).

Thanks for stepping in Omni, I can always use the help.

Denver Broncos select Tyson Alualu, DT/DE, California.

Omni and one of the 14 gubbadillion 2nd round picks for the Patriots is up. Then I’ll make the Broncos pick after that. Then two more for the Patsies.

New England Patriots
44) Arrelius Benn, WR, Illinois

MUTHERFUCKER!!! I wanted Benn and Alualu at these two spots, and went with Alulalu first thinking that the Pats liked what they saw from Edelmann and getting Welker and Tate back to go with Moss, that they wouldn’t select a WR there. Took a big risk and lost out big time. Shoulda figured out an Illini grad was picking, and taken Benn first.

That changes things. With Bryant, Tate, Thomas, and Benn gone, I’m not sure there’s a WR worth a second round pick. Gilyard and LaFell do nothing for me, but Damian Williams is intriguing. I think he plays faster than he gets timed, but he’s a USC receiver and has injury concerns.

I think there is enough depth at this tier of TE that it wouldn’t be good value to grab one of those (Hernadez?), and, again, it’s a bit early for a Center.

DAMMIT!!

Whose left? Brandon Spikes? Is he athletic enough for the NFL? Jahvid Best? He’s got good value here, but the Broncos don’t need another RB. Vlad Ducasse? Now he’s intriguing. Got great versatility and could help out on any spot on the O Line. Very tempting. And then there’s Tebow just lurking about. I don’t think Orton does it, but they got Brady Quinn too.

Man, I must be way overthinking this.

Denver Broncos select Damian Williams, WR, USC.

And on that note:

New England Patriots
46) **Vladimir Ducasse, OG/OT, Massachusetts **

I was tempted to go with another Illini there in Jon Asamoah but the fact that Ducasse might one day morph into a OT along with his New England roots made him the choice, even if Asomoah grades out higher.

New England Patriots
47) **Jahvid Best, RB, California
**
I’m not that high on Best but he’s the only RB left that really has a 2nd round grade and the Pats don’t have a great history of selecting RB talent so I don’t expect them to wait on the position.

48 Carolina Panthers select Lamar Houston, DT, Texas.

49 San Francisco 49ers (by proxy) select Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida.

50 Kansas City Chiefs select Koa Misi, OLB, Utah.

51 Oakland Raiders (by proxy) select Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State.

That takes us to:

31 (63) Colts
32 (64) Saints

Steelers (Stink Fish Pot) are on the clock. Then the Patriots (Omni) with ANOTHER round 2 selection, then Bengals (It’s Not Rocket Surgery), and then the Eagles (Jules Andre).

I still have two guys left on my proxy list. Hoping one of them will fall to the Saints at 64. We’ll see…

I think Cody is actually a perfect fit at #40 for the Bolts. They already have a set rotation at NT with Ian Scott and Ogemdi Nwagbuo, so Cody would have plenty of time to learn the NFL game… and NFL conditioning. And they’ll never have to ask him to be more than a 2 down player anyway. Plus, if anyone is worried about him eating his way out of the league, I think that’s a lot less likely to happen if he’s taken at #40 instead of #28 based on the level of contract you can expect to sign at those draft slots.

On the surface, it looks like the Chargers lost a lot this offseason cause the guys they lost or traded were all big names. But LT is coming off his worst season by far, Jamal Williams missed nearly all of last season anyway, and they couldn’t get Cromartie out of town fast enough. I actually expect AJ Smith to take 2 running backs in this draft, but every other pick in the draft will simply be Best Player Available.

hang on. Just saw I was on the clock
