That puts the Seahawks (Omni) on the clock. I have proxies for the JETS, and the Saints. If anyone wants to jump in and pick for the Vikings or Colts, feel free. Then we start Round 3.
All, right, time for me to defend this pick.
Consider the speed and size of Taylor Mays. He’s 6-3, 231, yet runs a 4.48 40. My intent (and I’d be pretty happy if they did this in real life) would be to move Mays to outside LB. Some of the top OLBs in this draft:
Sergio Kindle 6-4, 236, 4.74
Dekoda Watson 6-1 1/2 232, 4.64
Sean Weatherspoon 6-0 241 4.61
Mays is within 1-10 pounds of all of them, but is significantly faster. In recent years, the Giants have had a devil of a time covering the 3 TEs they face 2x a year (Witten, Cooley, and Celek) with their questionable LB staff. Picking Mays and putting him at OLB would directly address that problem.
With no worthwhile RB on the board the Seahawks look to replace Burleson.
Seattle Seahawks
60) Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota
61 NY Jets select Jon Asamoah, G, Illinois.
62 Minnesota Vikings select Tim Tebow, QB, Florida.
63 Indianapolis Colts select Corey Wooten, DE, Northwestern.
64 New Orleans Saints select Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson.
ROUND 3
1 (65) Rams
2 (66) Lions
3 (67) Buccaneers
4 (68) Chiefs
5 (69) Raiders
6 (70) Eagles
7 (71) Browns
8 (72) Bills
9 (73) Dolphins
10 (74) Jaguars
11 (75) Bears
12 (76) Giants
13 (77) Titans
14 (78) Panthers
15 (79) 49ers
16 (80) Broncos
17 (81) Texans
18 (82) Steelers
19 (83) Falcons
20 (84) Bengals
21 (85) Browns
22 (86) Packers
23 (87) Eagles
24 (88) Cardinals
25 (89) Cardinals
26 (90) Cowboys
27 (91) Chargers
28 (92) Browns
29 (93) Vikings
30 (94) Colts
31 (95) Saints
32 (96) Bengals (Compensatory selection)
33 (97) Titans (Compensatory selection)
34 (98) Falcons (Compensatory selection)
Omni then LOUNE are up. Get those proxies in.
Although I don’t think Tebow will make it as an NFL Quarterback, I couldn’t let him slide past Minnesota twice. Some have him as a first round pick, others top of the second, so getting him at the tail end of the second round was too good of value to pass on. Plus, Favre probably only has one more year to fuck up in the playoffs for his team, so they have a bit of time to develop him.
What about Jonathan Dwyer? He’s listed pretty high in some of the places I look at. DraftTek has him as the second-best “feature” back after Ryan Mathews. He’s number 41 on my own board.
I’m not that familiar with him but I’m pretty sure he’s not a 2nd round prospect. He might be the best remaining guy there, with Gerhardt, McCluster and Hardesty in the mix, but I just don’t view any of those guys as 2nd round values.
You have your own board? Man, I am really doing the Steelers a disservice!
Oh, and I think I heard Dwyer failed his drug test for the combine. marijuana. I predict he will fall down the draft this week because of that.
The Chiefs made a trade to move up 3 spots.
The Rams will get the Chiefs 3rd rounder (#68) and the last of their 5th Rounders (#144) for the Rams’ 3rd rounder (#65) and the Rams 6th Rounder (170).
With the newly acquired 65th pick, the Chiefs select Jared Veldheer, OT/OG, Hillsdale, Michigan.
- Detroit Lions select Dexter McCluster, KR/Fast Guy, Mississippi.
garygnu is around so he can make his own pick for the Bucs, then Omni for the Rams.
Actually, he failed for amphetamines, and it was because of prescription medication he was taking for diagnosed case of ADD. I think it’s kinda shitty that “confidentiality” means so little at the NFL combine.
3 (67) Buccaneers - Chad Jones, FS, LSU
Thanks for the correction. Did someone else get dinged for pot? I am not someone who pays close attention to this stuff, so I had to have heard it on the radio. I never heard Dwyer’s name before, so I must have heard something with his name and pot in the same story.
If he was taking meds for ADD, wouldn’t that have been disclosed at the combine? And if so, why leak it? The only reason to leak it is to deflate his draft value.
Yes, I am sad and have too much free time, so I have my own big board, 110 players long. It’s mainly an averages table from 14 other draft boards, but I’ve done some extra reading and a wee bit of tape-watching on some players the 49ers may have use for, and some who just plain have interesting names, like Selvish Capers and Clifton Geathers.
No need to apologize or explain. I was just impressed. If you are interested in this stuff, I can see how you can get drawn into it. That doesn’t make you sad. Too much free time, perhaps.
If I could follow the list of players better, I’d be spending a bit more time. But I’m one of those people that follow my favorite college football team, know a few of the nationally recognized star players, and that’s it. Forget about knowing any interior lineman. I never heard of any of them until this time of year.
When I first start looking at the draft, I start by looking for guys with great names. Here’s Hamlet’s 2010 Best Draft Names:
- John Connor
- Perrish Cox
- Zoltan Mesko
- Major Wright
- Pat Angerer
- Roddrick Muckelroy - he’ll be having tea and crumpets whilst tackling.
- Michael Hoowmanawanai
- Zipp Duncan
- Scott Sicko
Oh yeah, and the Rams (Omni) are still on the clock.
