SDMB Photo Thread - Show us a photo!

17 years ago, me a kittie and possibly Joe Exotic.

I had a bunch of gorilla photos from a trip to DRC I could have posted…

In the ‘Animals’ photo competition it was down to the flying heron I ended up posting, and this lion threesome taken on the plains of the Serengeti (JK, it was the Detroit Zoo):

Ruby, one of our border collies. My brother got her as a puppy and then he became too sick to look after her so we took her in. She’s a wonderful dog.

She’s also wearing her Star Fleet science officer’s collar.

Our other two pets, Merry and Ty the cat, engaging in inter-species canoodling:

Looks like a painful lick!

I think licking might be lion foreplay, actually. On my trip to the Serengeti we were watching a pair of lions. Initially they were just lying there like lazy cats. Then the male got up and started licking the female. Then they started mating. Our guide was like “Yeah, I knew they were about to do that.”

Actually, I got a picture of that, too, if we’re allowed to post lion porn here.

That goes over in the LILF thread.

Because it looks like the female is roaring or screaming in pain? Actually I think it was just a yawn.

Hey, if you win this month’s photo competition, you can choose whatever category you want for next month

Hah! I know who I’m voting for…

Jupiter and Io, shot from my backyard:

That’s great!
How many images is that?

I wish I could remember. I use Registax and video for planetary imaging. Normally I get thousands of frames for stacking, but Jupiter rotates fast and I was using a mono camera with RGB filters, so maybe 500-1000 for each filter?

The telescipe was a Celestron 8" Edge HD on a CGEM tracking mount. Camera was an ASI 120mm mono camera.

Very nice!

I should start campaigning. Vote for me and next month I’ll give you animal porn!

Username checks out.

Here’s a selfie :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:.

That was actually not the Serengeti, but Ngorongoro Crater (Which is kind of close to the Serengeti)

I went up to the Grand canyon today.
This Pano is at 25% of full resolution (23 stitched 36MPix images):

Took a Bronco photo on the way back:

Regarding the Grand Canyon picture: I’m finding it difficult to get my head around the perspective here but that might be my failing.

A wide lens will usually distort the image and this is a really wide image. However it’s also made up of individual shots which I assume have virtually no distortion. So is this an undistorted wide image? But then maybe the software that stitched it all together altered the distortion, or created one in some way?

Basically what I’m asking is: are the two sides of the canyon really as far apart as they seem in this image?

It’s the “Map Problem” - projecting a spherical (in this case cylindrical) image onto a flat surface.
The pano spans over 180°, created by rotating the camera around a central point. That turns a horizontal line into a parabola. Some discussion here:

My stitching software has some other options that trade one distortion for another - I’ll create some images with the other methods and post back.
