SDMB Photo Thread - Show us a photo!

A pensive photo I took at a marina a while ago.

I’ve never connected the problem of map projections with photography before but that’s really interesting.

This is Sally, a yellow spotted salamander that lived in our basement. Here she had wandered out to the bulkhead stairs, far from the sump hole where she was normally seen We haven’t seen him or her for a while though.

Here are two different rendering options. Neat, but not really what I wanted…

This may help illustrate the problem. I was directly in front on the wall, and rotated left and right to take multiple images, which were then stitched together. Since the camera was rotated (and not panned along the length of the wall), there is unavoidable distortion:

You would be able to achieve a straight wall by moving the position of the camera laterally rather than rotating from one spot. But then I suppose the people will have moved. Of course there are also tools that can fix the distortion of this image at the expense of the sharpness of the image at each end.

But at least you have options is what I’m saying… the option you’ve chosen is as good as any.

EDIT: sorry you gave voice to the moving along the wall option, and here am I telling you as if you didn’t know. It’s late here in London is my excuse.

Continuing that theme, here’s a Miata photo I took on Highway 1 in the Big Sur region a few years ago.

Tell me what you guys think of this. It’s not exactly a “photo.” If it loads as a (distorted) rectangular photo, click/tap on it and it should load a 360 degree view. I’ve really enjoyed making those shots over the last year and they’re super cool in VR.

That’s a very nice 360° pano.
Where is that?

Since this has kind of turned into the “pictures we didn’t submit for this month’s contest” thread, this is the other picture I thought about using for the “water” theme.

The harbor in Morro Bay, California, taken in 2020 on my socially distant outdoor pandemic vacation.

I also thought about just using the same sea otter picture I thought about using for the “animals” theme, which was actually also taken in Morro Bay on the same trip.

I entered an image of Niagara Falls into the competition but I recently photographed an even mightier waterfall - Victoria Falls. However because it was the dry season it felt less suitable to enter. Had I taken this photograph at a different time of year the whole length of the falls would have water cascading over it but you would have seen mostly mist, so probably still wouldn’t have entered it! Clickity click for bigger…

Here are a couple I considered for the Water theme.

This one is hard to see, but if you can enbiggen the photo you will see a barracuda.

Went Skiing at Snowbowl yesterday.
The sky was so azure, it didn’t look real.

And the way the clouds are shaped around the trees like that looks unreal as well. Nice photo! You could have entered that in the ‘Water’ competition— nothing that said it had to be the wet kind

Beautiful.

From a few years ago, during a long weekend in Coronado CA. We were staying across the street.

Kookaburra sits on Princhester’s welding table. He has been fed by people I think. They wouldn’t normally let people get this close.

Remarkably fortuitous cloud formation.
