SDMB Steam user community

My download rates have been normal. In fact I think they’ve increased their capacity greatly, because even during the winter sale when a million people were downloading their new games I still got over 3 MB/s.

Anyway, a bunch of us are getting Chivalry. It’s pretty good. The combat has a lot more depth than Mount & Blade, it’s an extremely brutal and visceral feeling game (deaths in this game, both mine and my enemy disturb me sometimes), the devs are really working on putting in more free content, and it’s just a lot of fun. Barely any games do melee combat and this one is a step ahead. Recommended - still on sale for another day.

I second this recommendation.I bought my copy with the sale, I’m debating buying one to gift to either my brother or brother-in-law (neither plays PC games currently but they’ve both expressed an interest in being able to play online). Can you purchase a game on steam and sit on the code to gift later?

So far I’ve only put in a little over 9 hours on it, and I can’t properly feint & parry to save my life (literally), but just by being smart about my limits and what will contribute to the team I’ve been able to frequently place in the top 3-5 scorers after my first few hours of playing.

[li]I play a Vanguard (middle-weight melee with crazy reach; good for avoiding hits while still being able to survive a few).[/li][li]I focus on objectives/denying the enemy objectives (naturally this depends on playing something other than Free-For-All, Team Deathmatch, Last Team Standing, or King of the Hill).[/li][li]I flank (occasionally even charging through holes in the line if necessary) to harass archers. Good ones can be a real burden on an offensive push, and the beauty of this tactic is that even when ineffective it still buys time for more capable allies.[/li][li]I will babysit friendly archers if they’re being harassed by melee, because they can make a big difference.[/li][li]I use hit & run tactics to bottom-feed on wounded & inept players to deny the opposing team the chance to achieve critical mass anywhere (this works especially well in Last Team Standing because the faster the shitty players die & respawn & die & respawn, etc, the faster the team runs out of spare lives).[/li][li]I avoid getting “stuck in” when a big crush of melee forms up, but dart in and out using stabbing/thrusting attacks to assist teammates without causing friendly-fire situations or drawing the enemy’s attention & having to defend myself.[/li][/ol]
The overall theme is that I try to assess the battle, to find opportunities that don’t involve getting bogged down in a stand-and-fight situation because I won’t last long enough to make a difference there. Then I just figure out what’s currently more of a priority for the team (or what’s being neglected by my teammates) and do that. It’s a real blast!

PS. I play Mason Order; if it ain’t red it’s dead!:stuck_out_tongue:

Oh! I also forgot to mention; I usually play in 3rd person perspective (default camera toggle is set to the “L” key). I suspect that first would be better for parrying, but since I’m having such a hard time getting the hang of it I use 3rd because I find it easier to move in and out of range and keep track of multiple enemies from that perspective.

I think you can now buy games on steam without an intended target, and just put it in your inventory. But if not, the old method is to send the game to some e-mail address you own, and then at some later point redirect it to the e-mail of the person you want to give it to.

I made a thread about a Chivalry server. I’m hoping we can make a regular SDMB game night around it. Check out the thread, and grab Chivalry now while it’s still on sale.

Black ops 2 is a free weekend on steam. I’m never gonna buy those games at the price they charge, but I do enjoy the mindless killing from time to time, so I play them when they’re free. Grab it if you want to get some SDMB games going. You may have to restart steam, then it’ll appear in your library with other games. A little under 5gb download.

A few things.

Planetside 2 has gotten some significant improvements, plus our server will be getting merged which will bring up the population and revitalize interest amongst our group, so we’ll be playing again a lot and I recommend you guys give it a try. It’s free.

It’s a War of the Roses free weekend on steam, so I’ll give it a go and you guys might as well try it. It’s probably not as good as chivalry but it’s worth checking out.

Natural selection 2 came out with a big content patch and it’s half off ($12.50) for the weekend.

Simcity 5 is coming out in a couple days. I’ve created a separate thread to organize some Doper region play. It’s not a Steam game, but I figure almost all Doper gamers have subscribed to this thread so I’m posting here to give maximum exposure.

Join us over in the Simcity 5 Doper region organizing thread.

Yeah, feel free to use the thread to point out other organization efforts, that’s fine.

FWIW, I like War of the Roses. I don’t think it’s going to be a big game amongst SDMBers because we already have chivalry, which is better, but they feel pretty different considering how similar in premise they are. The combat is nowhere near as visceral and satisfying in WOTR, but the gameplay is slower - people live longer, there’s more movement, team tactics dominate more. It has a cool knock down/finish off/revive mechanic. Also the armor seems super detailed - you actually have to aim for weak spots in the armor with some weapons. So it feels different enough in gameplay that it doesn’t feel redundant with chivalry, so I’m sure I can get $5 of entertainment out of it, grab it with me if you want.

Anyone else playing Arma III Alpha yet?

I’m thinking about it, probably will create a thread later. If anyone happens to have an invite burning a hole in their pocket…

I’ve got one for you, but won’t actually get it till the 14th I think

Natural Selection 2 is having a free weekend on steam and a half off (50%) sale. Great game, worth trying, we’ll probably get some games going tomorrow.

Alright, so the last few months until recently I haven’t done much gaming and I’ve mostly been playing planetside 2 with people, although we’ve been touching some classics here and there. But I want to start diversifying again and getting more SDMBers involved.

So I’m going to try to actively try more things now and get more things going, both newer games and ones we’ve played. We’ve been playing L4D2 some lately, we’re currently in a 7 man really great civ 5 game. We play chivalry pretty regularly.

I want to start working in some old classics, like dirt 2/3, half-life 2 deathmatch, maybe warband (pretty similar to chivalry I guess but kinda different, maybe once in a while), civ 5 (buy gods and kings during the steam sale if you want to play, we’re not playing vanilla anymore). I need to play more natural selection 2. The Day Z standalone public alpha is gonna get released sometime this summer. Flatout UC can be fun when you can get GFWL to work. Defcon! And some new stuff, let’s see what pops up during the sale. I want to get Assassin’s Creed revelation, we had some fun with brotherhood and apparently revelation has some game modes that improve on some of the stupid stuff about brotherhood. I’m open to suggestions too about what might make a good game for us.

Anyway, if you’ve gamed with me before, contact me and tell me what you want to play. If you haven’t, add me on steam to your friends list.

I’ll be on this thread during the steam sale to suggest what to get when it’s cheap.

Oh, and this weekend we’re doing some drunk half-life 2 deathmatch (if you bought hl2 on steam you own it, otherwise it’s $5, it’s really fun, flinging toilets at people) and warband multiplayer. They’re both small downloads. If you want to play with us, get those installed, get on my friends list, and set up mumble.

I created a new thread to discuss/recruit for our multiplayer Civ 5 games. Post there if interested.

I’m in for DayZ SA. Been playing a tiny bit of the new beta for Arma III Wasteland but the controls are kicking my ass.

Yeah I don’t know how stable the SA will be. I wish they’d have just built it into Arma 3. Originally they were planning to release it like a year ago, well ahead of Arma 3, but it’s taken so long that they might as well have used the much superior arma 3 engine for it. Hopefully it’s open/free for the alpha.

Anyway, in about 1.5 hours we’re going to be doing HL2DM and warband, they’re quick installs so if you don’t already have them you can get them by now.

Say, I have a stupid question.

I decided to buy *Chivalry while it was on sale over the weekend. I got two downloads:
*
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Beta

Um … what’s the difference?

The beta is probably a test build available if people want to test new features or balance or something, but you don’t need to worry about that, just get the regular game.

Civ 5 is the daily sale on steam (which means it’s really on sale for 2 days) so if you’re interested in SDMB Multiplayer games grab the gold pack now (there’s a gold upgrade option on the sale page for $5). Gold gets you gods and kings and all the civ DLCs, which will be required to play with us.
