I was just thinking of pugluvr’s thread about barbecue rubs and it struck me that it might be time for a Straight Dope Spring Break™ party!
I’m sure that all of us here in the San Francisco bay area have had enough of the wet weather. Cabin fever is setting in and there will be blue skies coming some time soon. I propose a barbecue party for some jollies. If pug promises to come I’ll make some of my refritos and give up some secrets about how to make a dry rub. I’ll even bring some of my own special blend just for kicks.
Other people at these boards have expressed interest in dry rub techniques so we would need to provide minutes for the event to share the joy. I’ll also bring some of my Carolina style barbecue sauce that uses no tomato product. I suppose I’ll have to post the recipe too.
Anyway, enough people have already sampled my grill work to know that this is not a hollow promise. What say ye? Is not a Straight Dope Spring Break™ party in order? My schedule is open for almost anything in the next 6-8 weeks, how about the rest of the Bay Area dopers?
Snooooopy, since you don’t cook alot you may not realize that in order to find out most people’s barbecue recipes you have to pry them out of their cold dead hands.
You will please notice that I make no mention of sharing my dry rub recipe. <insert evil grin smilie here>
I won’t be going ( I have this fear of being around real live people. ), but I like to see it happen, just in case they get me the right meds, and I change my mind.
BTW: The first time I read this I had no idea what a ‘rub’ was, let alone a ‘dry’ one. I still don’t, but I’m guessing it’s something you do to the cook, right?
Let me know when you’ve settled on a date, I never know where I may be that far out. BTW, I also make my own sauces, shall I bring a sample? Mrsstuffinb, was actually suggesting we go to/sponsor a Dopefest since we’re leaving Cali this summer, so this would be a good opportunity to meet before we leave.
I prefer my rubs with lotion or oil, and preferably from my doper, thank you.
As always, psy and I will keep an eye on this and attend if at all humanly possible, since we’re so good at sticking to these things.
We’d really like to meet some of the new dopers coming out of the woodwork though, and catch up with old friends. We just suck at actually making it there.
Let me know when you pick out a date, Chris. This time I’ll dodge Uncle Influenza! If you need me to bring anything (hint: I make a kickbutt tater salad), let me know.
As an aside, I have a large pork shoulder in the fridge today, well rubbed with a dry rub that I formulated, and it’s going on the ‘cue early tomorrow morning. I have some hawg wash in the fridge, too, to mop it with, and I will be interested to see how my first attempt at dry rub shoulder goes. Aw, jeez! I forgot the most important part – beer. I’d better go back to the store and lay in some for tomorrow. All that grillin’ is thirsty work.
fogmage, I am socially inept, as well. Don’t worry, these are Dopers. I’m sure if you and I can’t cut it IRL, they will excuse us if we sit in a corner.

Nonetheless, my friend Camster, who hosted the holiday party, is willing to go another round with the gang, so we have that as a backup location if all else fails. The only thing that she insists upon is that we bring all sorts of menfolk for her to eye.
I’ll tentatively pencil this in for about four weeks from now. Let’s get this one together and have a blast.

Zenster, after your unacceptable behavior towards me at the SB, I have no desire to co-host a gathering with you.
Sounds like fun to me, but nobody’s mentioned a date yet…how about Sunday 22 April 01? I’d invite ya’ll to my place but I live in one of the icky neighborhoods, even when there isn’t construction going on across the street.

If you have taken offense, that is certainly your privlege, but please know that absolutely none was ever meant. I wish you had emailed me with your concerns before this as I was obviously unaware of them.
