Interpretation: Parasite co-infection is associated with a reduced risk of severe COVID-19 in African patients. Parasite-driven immunomodulatory responses may mute hyper-inflammation associated with severe COVID-19.
So the next big viral anti-viral will be quacks selling live mail-order internal parasite larvae. If you don’t want the vax, it’s just the thing for you.
That’s gotta be more palatable than huffing hydro peroxide.
OMG. Next minute you know, you’ll have people going to the ER with explosive diarrhea and prolapsed assholes. They do an ova and parasite and find whipworm. Newsflash: “Whipworm Epidemic in Central Nevada. Authorities Currently Questioning Local Naturopath.”
A group of NYC school teachers is appealing to the Supreme Court to block the city’s vaccine mandate for teachers.
"The order is unfair, they said, because it does not apply to other city employees who routinely deal with the public, including firefighters and police officers. Teachers, by contrast, “maintain close indoor contact with children, who are dramatically less susceptible to illness from Covid.”
These teachers are ignoring the huge surge in pediatric Covid cases (as of mid-September, they were up 240% since July) and a marked increase in child hospitalizations due to Covid as the delta variant spreads.
I think this is important for people to pay attention to, and difficult to adjust to… The delta variant isn’t necessarily more likely to infect kids than the previous versions of Covid, but it’s more likely to infect everyone, and kids under 12 can’t get vaccinated yet. That makes them more vulnerable, proportionately, than the same time last year.
But again, if you have a larger number of cases overall and you apply that percentage, you’re going to see children hospitalized. And that’s really the most important take home for families is that there’s nothing particularly more dangerous about the delta variant for children, but it has always remained a danger. And what we’re seeing is that the children that are hospitalized are, for the most part - and adults as well are, for the most part, people that are not vaccinated, whether that’s because they’ve chosen not to be vaccinated or if they are just in an age group that has not yet had access.
I’d be pretty pissed off if my kid got infected from an unvaccinated teacher.
I think they do have a point about other city employees not having a vaccine mandate. They should as well. But that should be the takeaway, not a suggestion that teachers shouldn’t be required to vaccinate.
Ironically, teachers’ unions have been pushing for teachers to get vaccinated against Covid-19 (and lobbying for them to be near the front of the line for getting shots), while some union members are resisting vaccination.
The difference is that most interactions with other city employees are short. You get pulled over by a policeman, you’re in contact with them for 20 minutes, most of that is outside. Your house catches fire, the fireman is there for an hour, maybe 4 if it’s a big fire. And you’re outside. You go to the city clerk’s office to get a copy of a form, you’re spending a lot more time in close proximity to other people waiting on the clerk than you are in close proximity to the clerk, and the clerk is probably spending most of their time in a big room with a couple other people. With teachers, the teacher is in close proximity to children in a small room with questionable ventilation for 6 hours. They are in closer contact to multiple sources for a longer period of time in a smaller area. More chances to infect; more chances to be infected.
Not saying that there shouldn’t be mandates for other city workers, just that mandates for teachers is more important.
Plus it was just a couple of weeks ago where we had the story of the COVID19 infected teacher who took off her mask to read to her students and infected half the class.
Plus, anyone getting pulled over by a cop or conducting transactions at City Hall is old enough to get vaccinated. Many students aren’t, so they need their adults to get vaccinated more than the rest of us do.
Wait, what’s the process by which a single justice can deny a request? I thought everything the Supreme Court did required at least a few justices to agree (even if we don’t always know which ones it was).
I think this will explain the emergency process by which one can appeal to a particular Supreme Court justice who has oversight over a particular circuit.
Interesting. Reading over that it sounds vaguely familiar, so I may have simply forgotten that was a thing.
Also, today I learned that the Supreme Court has guides specifically for reporters which outline the procedures and policies of the court. That’s brilliant.
I think I’ve figured it out. The anti-vaxxers give lots of excuses (and any excuse will do, no matter how ridiculous) to give themselves the fortitude to keep going, to achieve their goal.
They’re the equivalent of suicide bombers.
They no longer want to live in a world where non-whites have actual power, where women aren’t controlled by men, and where gays and transfolk can openly be gay and trans.
And if they take out a bunch of people who are fine with these things, so much the better.
Oh, I know anti-vaxxers who are feminists, opposed to racism, and pro-LGBTQ. Scientists warning about climate change? They’re right, and people should listen! Scientists insisting vaccines are safe? They’re in the pocket of “Big Pharma!” Pass the apple cider vinegar and that shungite!
Of course, I know conservative anti-vaxxers as well, and they’re all “The government can’t tell ME what to do!” One of them got COVID and was hospitalized for 10 days. Her family asked for prayers. She’s home now but far from well. She still won’t get vaccinated, but at least she’s done a 180 on “COVID isn’t that bad. Doctors are lying on death certificates.”
