Shayna, it would be a shame if an incident such as this (admittedly ugly) one would make you leave the board. Your contributions are always welcome, and you would be missed terribly.
Unfortunately, with trolls, sock puppets and what not, something like this is just waiting to happen. And in a community as large and diverse as the SDMB, it can get ugly. But I see that as more of a reason to stay. To maintain civility on the board and help keep everyone sane.
I would understand if you left, whether for a while or permanently. But I think it’s a mistake.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate your sentiments - truly I do. But I want to make one thing perfectly clear…
I am not leaving because of the trolls!
I am leaving (hopefully temporarily) because of the regular posters who think troll hunting is amusing and fun; who struck out in lynch mob fashion against an established poster on this board; who flew into the room with guns ablaze, shooting first and asking questions later; who demanded explanations from the VICTIM (kindof like asking a woman why she was raped - what she did to deserve it and why would someone hate her that much. AS IF SHE’D KNOW!); who chose to believe the worst in an individual who had proven himself on this board for nearly 1,000 posts over several months; and who basically pissed on me and my good word when I stood tall and said that a miscarriage of justice was being served.
I’m leaving (for now) because I’m disappointed in the way this whole thing was handled by the administration. It concerns me that people are banned, preventing them from expressing “their side” publicly, yet the screaming, angry mob was demanding that the victim here should post his side or he wasn’t to be believed. Forget the fact that he had an entire OP with his explanation and forget the fact that he was prevented from saying anything further because he was banned from doing so.
I’m sick of it. Not the trolls. The regulars here. And not all the regulars, just the ones that make this place a nightmare to navigate through with their hypocritical, riotous, holier-than-thou, you-OWE-me-something attitude.
I just need a damn break, that’s all. And I’d like to see this unfortunate incident serve as a lesson to a lot of people here and perhaps even cause some rules to be changed. I won’t hold my breath though.

When I first joined this board, I thought it would be fun. Learn a bit, laugh a bit, have a good time.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve learned a lot, laughed a lot, and had a really, really damn good time. But there have been many painful moments, too.
Shayna, I know that Wally’s death hit you particularly hard, and I know that the recent episode with BratMan had to have torn open a wound that wasn’t even close to healing. Because of that, I understand your need to step away.
I hope you decide to come back. You have become one of the brightest lights on this board, and you are definitely one of the reasons I come here every day.

This will pass, and many more “regulars” here will miss you more than those that fit your description of virtual rapists. Just remember there are a lot of people out there both good and not quite so. We all handle things differently and each have our own perceptions and contexts.
I’d like to think that some of those who rashly jumped in to accuse Brat did so more out of frustration with other things than a genuine need to hurt.

You’ve obviously been through a lot lately, and you are WAY too emotionally involved here, and I think all of this is because of Wally’s passing.
This is not a bad thing at all in the grand scheme of things. Grieving is good. But it seems you finally reached the anger stage and you are taking it out on friends of yours, Shayna. And that’s very much unlike you.
I wanted to scream at you that Wally himself was known as a troll-hunter, and he would have been on top of everything as best he could the whole time, and I believe anyone here who knows Wally would agree with me.
He also would be the first to say he was sorry if he was mistaken. “But I’ve got my eye on you,” I can hear him saying.
However, I won’t scream because I do like you, and you are not doing any of this out of anything other than remorse and grieving, and I know in my heart that after a break, you’ll come back here as good and rational as before.
So, please enjoy your break from here. We’ll leave a light on for you.
