Shodan, explain this please

For comparison, Shodan, this was a bit funnier.

Not honoured by me, that’s for sure. I’m pretty sure Moto knows by now how I feel about the US military, especially the bits that get involved in unnecessary wars.

I’m regretting not making a post implying homosexuality when there was that post about McCain and Day in Lib’s pitting:

Aah, fuck it, I’m going to do it now…

Obama jokes aren’t going to work on you at all, Shirley. See what I said earlier about extremists.

But don’t worry - the humorless, foam-flecked rants from the dolts against even a hint of humor at Obama’s expense are part of the entertainment.

Shodan

I don’t think I’m incorrect in saying that a fair portion of the political posters on this board need to lighten the fuck up.

Blasphemy!

Shodan

I guess I left myself *wide open * for that one…whoops, I did it again!

Called it.

Falsely accused, whereas McCain really was in the Hanoi Hilton. That’s the difference. Using Obama=Muslim jokes in some way vindicates the tactics of Fox News and perpetuates the meme.

Not true. For instance, I don’t find jokes about McCain’s age funny (so far - I’m sure a good one would get a chuckle). I think I’d find other jokes about Obama hilarious, like Will Smith’s one about how he should play him in movies because they’re both jugheads. So it’s not partisanship, exactly (I mean, I like Obama well enough, but he’s waaaay to the Right of me, politically, and he’s not going to be my president.

Hell, I think even 'luci’s to the Right of me, politically.

I think everyone is.
So wait, I’m a little confused now. Did or didn’t Obama attend a madrass as a child in Kenya? I thought that part of this “Obama is a Muslim” routine was actually true.

FWIW, I didn’t notice the implied Muslim connotation, just thinking it was a jab at the Obama Cult, but now that you mention it, there probably is a bit of an intentional Muslim implication there. Bad form.

I’m glad you have a sense of humour - I just noticed you included yourself in that statement, so my post in that other thread may come across (heh!) as an attempted personal insult - didn’t mean it as one (NotThatThere’sAnythingWrongWithBeingGay, of course). I just hate seeing straight lines (heh!) get wasted, that’s all.

He attended a “Muslim” school for a time in Indonesia. But it was only “muslim” in the sense that lots of muslims went there. It was not a madrassa.

BTW, the fact that Obama is not a Muslim is what makes the joke a bit funnier. It’s like when someone says: If I like Barbara Streisand, does that make me gay?

So what? Obama isn’t really worshipped as a god, and McCain didn’t really fly by flapping his arms. But you picked out something to be offended by, because it offended you and the others did not.

It isn’t possible to convince someone to find something funny, any more than it is possible to argue them out of taking offense if they choose. But that isn’t going to stop me from making jokes.

Peace be unto you.

Shodan

No wonder your joke didn’t work. I don’t believe anyone has been more critical of Obama than I, and so it is natural that your attempt to spoof something nonexistent fell flat. I have expressed my support for him using very measured language, and have explained in detail each point I’ve made that casts him in either a positive or negative light. I think your problem in comprehension stems from the fact that Obama and McCain are often compared directly, which carries the effect of comparing escargot to a slimy backyard slug. If I were comparing Obama and say, Saint Thomas Aquinas. or William of Ockham. or any number of other great historical figures, then his positives would not stand out quite so much.

Well, as long as we’re killing the frog here, the reason I didn’t find Shodan’s joke funny is because it was, frankly, kinda predictable. Partially because it was coming from Shodan, where taking a jab at Obama and/or his supporters is itself predictable, but because the Obama as Muslim joke has been done to death. Just as the McCain as old man joke has been done to death.

Personally, I’d love to see someone take a jab at the candidates that was:

  1. a new angle
  2. unexpected

and

  1. not completely toothless

I know, I know. I don’t ask for much.

That’s tautological, but yeah, that’s how offense works. What you’re glossing over is the reason for the offense (that reason being - “Perpetuating the tired Obama=Muslim meme isn’t very big or clever”)

How about this:

What’s brown and sticky?

A stick, you racist homophobe!

The key to humor is: It’s funny because it’s true.

On the Daily Show, they did a piece on Obama backing off his promise to use public financing. John: “Obama is on tape as saying he will use public funds. Why the change in position?” Correspondent: “John, we all say things we don’t mean just before we get rich!” It’s a slam on Obama (a mild one, granted), it’s true, and it’s a damn sight funnier than any Obama-is-a-Muslim crack.

Now, that is a funny joke!!

Now that’s funny.

Shodan
