Last night I went out with a couple of friends from work, and as the night wore on and we got more inebriated, the conversation turned to a religious discussion. One of my friends is an atheist, one is agnostic, and I consider myself a Christian. The conversation got pretty heated (considering we were getting drunk and belligerent), with my friend frequently telling me that I’m fooling myself or just trying to make myself feel better by telling myself that there’s some greater power and purpose to our existence. I would counter by saying that I’ve tried to consider the possibility that God doesn’t exist, and it just makes no sense to me. And the agnostic kept having to smooth everything over and calm us both down.
Eventually the bar closed and we all started to make our way home – it wasn’t really an angry argument, just typical religious debate (albeit not a particularly deep one, because of the booze). The last thing I said on it was “It always comes down to the question of faith, and I can’t explain why I believe the things I do, I just do.” We all said good night and got in our cabs.
I was sharing a cab with the agnostic guy, and when I got in, he handed me something. “Here, I just found this in the back seat when I sat on it. The people in here before must’ve left it. Do you want it?” It was a small crucifix, the kind that’s worn on a necklace. I’ve got it now, and I’m thinking I should contact the cab company to see if I can return it in case the people who left it are looking for it, but unfortunately I can’t remember which cab company it was. I may just find a chain for it and start wearing it myself.
