It is not just American, I am European and regularly get the chance to…ehh inspect the pubic area of a pretty large number of young European women and 95% is totally shaved (sometimes some stuble if it’s later in the day), the rest is trimmed. An actual bush is a rarity. A large number of men also shaves and most girls seem to appreciate that.
What might be interesting to note is that the girls’ decision on pubic hair is mainly driven by the invisible hand; which indicates that a majority of European men prefer shaved genitals. As I said before in this thread, I am definitely one of them. Both for myself and for the girls.

The bottom line is that smooth skin feels good. If a woman doesn’t even trim, that sends the message that they don’t care about or really enjoy sex. Liking sex and wanting to maximize sensation is sexy, which makes trimming/shaving/waxing/lasering sexy.
Stubbly, razor-bumpy skin, on the other hand…
This seems to settle it. If the OP (or any other Doper) does turn this into a poll (which I heartily second), I’d like to see it broken down by age (ie “I’m 18-30 and I prefer shaved”, etc.) Those of us like me (born 1972) that grew up with hair on their Playboy women prefer hair and don’t get why “the young kids of today” like shaved. (I’ve only been with one woman sexually - my wife, also in her 40s, also ntural - but I’d be willing to wager that most women my age are natural and most men my age prefer natural). Those born later grew up with bare porn, and probably prefer their women that way as a result. Sigmund Freud would absolutely love this thread.
(This leaves me with the question of why all of a sudden one day, women started shaving it all, though, messing with what guys grew up with. Maybe it’s part of the generational rebellion?)

Per the OP, I prefer variety in my porn, and feel that there are visually awesome shaved and hairy pussies out there, as well as less-esthetic examples of both. However, IRL, I’ve come to prefer shaved pussies over hairy ones. A shaved pussy simply feels better to me and to her (hugely important), and is much more pleasant to stimulate orally. While a landing strip seems like a great compromise and works really well in porn, I’ve found it is somewhat distracting up-close in real life, by making what’s left of the hair that much more prominent, compared to a fully shaven pussy. Like some others above, I tend to associate a total lack of pube grooming with a general lack of interest in sexual activities. Certainly dubious, but based on personal experience.
Around here, most women in their 30’s do at least trim their pubes if not regularly wax it all off. I, a guy in my mid-thirties, heavily trim but don’t shave. It’s certainly not a youngster-only thing. Shaving or plucking pubic hair predates modern Western culture by several millennia, at least, anyway, although likely not nearly as widespread as now anywhere before (we have the tech to do it easily).
Also pointed out by others, the debate over whether shaved pussies make women look prepubescent or not: it really depends. Some women have pussies that look nothing like a young girls’ when shaved while others really would be hard to tell (small, pale inner labia hidden by full, smooth, pale outer labia). I’m surprised anyone who has been with more than a couple of women is not familiar with this variability, and takes a one-sided stance one way or the other.
As per the baiting questions above concerning how one would know what a prepubescent female looks like: depending on culture (sauna culture to be specific), most everyone in Finland, for instance, knows exactly what prepubescent girls and boys (and 70-year old grandmas for that matter) look like naked.
I’m 45, and prefer shaved or neatly trimmed. I’ve been effectively celibate for almost 16 years, but when I was still getting busy the completely shaved pussy was still quite a novelty. The only one I ever encountered was on a girl I dated for a year and a half. She usually just trimmed, but sometimes took it all off. She was also a few years younger than me. Relevant to the above quote, I had sexual encounters with women closer to my own age as well as a couple who were older, and most of them did little to no trimming. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the majority of them also wouldn’t let me go down on them (nor they on me).
