Single Doper and Nerd Hookup Thread and Cotillion

Still working on the picture, for interested folks. I have two already, one from my high school prom that looks pretty much the same as I do now (what little difference 8 years makes) … except the quality’s poor… and another from a few years later, from a family photo shoot that is much better quality, but I’d reached an all-time best body-weight ratio, so it’s a little dishonest. So! Off to charge up my digital camera I go.

Those interested in a picture of me can find one here.

Hm. Can’t resolve the host. My DNS server doesn’t seem otherwise spazzy… something I’m missing?

I went to UCI! Irvine’s a gnarly place, in the Granny Weatherwax sense. All those twisty little streets… I’m up near Knott’s Berry Farm, about half an hour away on a good day.

I haven’t played NS since the latest patch; not because I don’t like it, but I never got around to patching it (Arcanum, then Fallout again) :p. I was a good Gorge, a decent Lerk, a trusty Marine, and a horribly inept commander. I don’t think I’ve seen you on the servers I frequented: RedFive and Freaks Unleashed. I go by “Silver,” but I know there’s at least one other person using that out there.

My mother and brother are big Star Trek fans, so I ended up being a trekker by osmosis. I am the lone Star Wars lover in the family, but I have the most stuff. Aside from SW, I like alternate history and humorous fantasy. Well, humorous anything, really!

I’m not really into anime because I don’t like the majority of the character design, but I do know there are a lot of good stories out there. I’ve been trying to watch Adult Swim to get a taste for it.

The most recent picture I have scanned is five years old, though (HS senior photos). I’ll try to find something more recent with my hair in something resembling control.

Aw hell.

It appears to be momentarily down.

Oh, bah. Digital Cameras take too long to charge.

Here’s the svelte and thin one.

Here’s the earlier, fuzzy one.

Here’s the bonus picture of me at my most animated.

Well, hell, in that case, how you doin’?

And what the heck, here’s a blurb about me. This may well be an incoherent stream of consciousness, but here goes.

Primus: I’d generally be perceived as a nice guy, but hopefully without being too much of a weenie; I’ve been described as “an analytic teddy bear.” Secundus: I have a dry, witty sense of humor; I’m occasionally accused of being cute (more due to personality than anything else); I’m honest (or at least that’s what I tell people); and I apparently have an inordinate love of semicolons. Um, third: I’m fairly well educated (had a few papers published by MIT Press), and am quite good at doing the absent-minded-professor thing.

I’m moderately well-read; I mostly stick to old pulp science fiction and fantasy, and when I venture into real littrachaw I lean toward folks like Cabell and Borges (and H. L. Mencken makes me cackle evilly); I also read the occasional pop-sci book. I’d happily go to the ballet one night, a Motorhead concert the next, and an alt-country show the third; and of course I listen to KEXP. I work in the computer industry but am currently between gigs. I used to work at a large software company based in Redmond, Washington, so you’re probably within a couple degrees of separation of stuff I’ve done. (I won’t name specific things, though, because I’d prefer to retain my anonymity.)

Personality-wise, I’m an introvert till I get to know people, yet it’s pretty easy to spark my interests in activities (I’m an INTP, if you’re familiar with the Keirsey/Myers-Briggs scale). It’s important to me to get exposed to new stuff, whether it be information, art, music, travel, or what-have-you. I also have inattentive-type attention deficit disorder. I’m a strong believer in self-reflection and self-improvement. Activity-wise, I’m pretty sedentary these days due to a chronic knee injury, so I need to stick to mostly cultural rather than athletic pursuits. However, I’m currently doing Pilates to work on getting rehabbed. Oddly enough, I was recently complimented on my “highly mobile shoulder blades”, a talent which in some circles is apparently considered a good thing. Go figure.

I have no pictures available online at the moment.

Nice progression there, Candid.

As I rapidly try to think of where another picture of me might be found…

…and in addition to being incoherent, I’m apparently unable to proofread effectively enough to realize that I accidentally deleted the line indicating that I’m a SWM, 34, in the Seattle area.

Web server back online, picture is right here for all interested parties.

(Note: That is not my natural hair color.)

Hey there Geek Overlor- oops, Ben, I’m doing just fine. So you hung out with the bigwigs at HQ, eh? My little cubby hole is at GISS, a.k.a. the thorn in GSFC’s side.

In looking over your first post here I see that I fit your minimum height criterion (I’m 5’7"), but fair warning - the words “geologist” and “fashion” are not generally known to be uttered in the same breath, so go easy on me. It so happens that my upcoming work schedule will have me in eastern PA on a regular basis, and I should be getting down to North Wales about once a month. So if you’re game, I’d love to get together and watch the ever-suave 007.

How many have I missed? :frowning: I know there was one on Apr. 16, but I wasn’t in town then. Actually, that’s been my problem in general lately - I’ve hardly been in my own apartment since November, since work has been so crazy. With a few recent developments I hope that will change, in which case I would love to meet up the local Dopers more often.

And what do you mean, lawyering doesn’t have the same geek mojo? You mean to say that with your engineering degree, you haven’t at least contemplated patent law? If you have, that ought to be credential enough.

I meant women, dude. I mean you’re a nice enough guy, Jeff, but I just don’t swing that way.

/me gapes at catsix’s picture…

So what is your natural color? Either way, you’re a total babe.

It’s an ashy brown color.

The picture was taken when the dye job was horribly faded. Currently my hair is the color of red wine except for the blond section in the front, which I like to refer to as my ‘skunk stripe’.

Believe it or not, I had never heard of the X-Men and knew nothing about this ‘Rogue’ character 9 years ago when my stylist said ‘Hey, mind if I stripe your hair?’

Wow, I turn my back for a day and a half and this thread jumps to 5 pages. Olentzero, we are by far the coolest people here.

As promised, my lil profile. Umm…

SWF, 24, Long Island, Jewish in culture but not really in practice. First nerdy thing that comes to mind is that I’m a member of the National Spanish Honor Society and the National Social Work Honor Society. Yes, go me. My highest Scrabble score was 344, and without any bingos. Again, go me.

Someone on this board described my music taste as “well-written indie pop” and that suits me fine. Favorite movies include *Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Princess Bride, Playing By Heart, High Fidelity, Donnie Darko, Psycho Beach Party, Wet Hot American Summer * and so on.

Among my friends, I’m the funny one. I like quick sharp wit (I did improv for a while), and yes, I have a dirty mind. Ummm crap I hate trying to describe myself for things like this! Bah!

Here’s me, on the right.

Aww…a truely beautiful pic no matter what the color :).

Candid, I’ll actually be down in Morgantown next Tuesday; to sign my lease for next year (probably end up living in the wonderful little apartment city by the stadium).

OK, here goes. :Takes deep breath:

SWM, 30, brown hair, 5’8", 150ish lbs., in Nashville. I’m a bearded, left-handed, slightly pigeon-toed, vaguely conservative atheist Mac user cat person who doesn’t drive (by choice), has a social life on the low end of the scale, and who can’t compose a single run-on sentence about himself without employing a certain amount of self-deprecation. I have an independent streak not quite a mile wide, but as much as 3500 feet wide on a good day. Romantically, largely clueless. No good at dancing or at small talk within groups of more than, say, three. Clearly unskilled at selling my stronger points. Perl geek. Mac geek. Web geek. Astronomy geek. Planetarium geek (which is its own rare brand,) Trek geek. TMBG, Hitchhikers, Red Dwarf, Python, and most of the other usual stuff.

Why thank you.

I am of course hoping I will get to see the mug of the beer geek soon.

You say that now, but it’s possible I forgot to mention the giant cardboard cutout of Buffy in my living room.

I think we’ve had one or two other get-togethers. Now that you mention it, we should call another for early June.

Anyway, I contemplated patent law, but I decided that I wasn’t geeky enough.

Hi Ava! Drop in some time! We can show you around Tronna and you can experience weird buildings, French, and metric! Then we can hit the good libraries and bookshops: The Judith Merrill Collection of Speculative Fiction, Bakka Books, The Beguiling, Anime Extreme…
