Single Doper and Nerd Hookup Thread and Cotillion

how you doin’, Junie?

I’m one of the people who asked for this thread, so here goes…

SJM, n/s, 5-10, just turned 32, in Philadelphia, and often in Washington, DC. My main interest is competitive tae kwon do; I’m also interested in anything sci / tech, with a holdover interest in literary and hard science fiction. I once was a Trekkie, though that’s presently in remission. I used to game, too, until my DM moved out of the area. I also dive (fancy that), attend plays (Mikado is coming to town!), go to museums (last one was Musee de Orsay in Paris), and am willing to learn about practically anything that interests you. Variety is the spice of life!

I’m a professional computer guy, presently in tier 2 tech support. I’ve been in computers, one way or another, for most of my life. I have a master’s degree in info science, or, the art of being the Geek Overlord.

I’m looking for a lady around my own age, n/s, 5-6 or taller (beautifully tall is good!), highly intelligent, witty, with a good fashion sense. That’s right, I’m searching for a well-dressed geekette. If your idea of a good day-long date would be to tour the battleship New Jersey followed by the laser show at the Franklin Institute, then please drop me a line!

(SanguineSpider: As I noted back during the Valentine Exchange, if you weren’t already taken, I’d be all over your listing in a minute! How ya’ doing, Spidey? )

(Lsura: I was down in your area last year. If I’d known you were there, I would’ve dropped you a message to say: How you doing?)

Incidentally, it’s a partial hijack, but any D&D or other RPG players within a reasonable distance of Morgantown WV may feel free to contact me. Never can tell when one of my campaigns will have an opening.

So, CandidGamera, how you doin?

Single white geek of female persausion, age 26, from the general Pittsburgh area (roughly 35 miles south south east) and that would be roughly 52 miles north of the greater Morgantown area.

I am an instructor of all things computer at the college level (networking, programming, etc) and my geek code is here:

I like to play video games in which lots of people die quickly, see movies in which lots of people die quickly, play paintball in which nobody dies, and take my guns to the firing range. I sort of watch TV out of the corner of my eye while I am computering, which means I have kinda-seen lots of Buffy, Monk, and other assorted shows that I accidentally clicked to and didn’t notice for three hours.

I like to go out, though sometimes I just like to stay 127.0.0.1.

Irrational, too-much-tea-inspired desire to post to this. I think this thread is a wonderful idea, and I hope many Doper marriages come out of it.

What, me?

Half-Japanese half-Caucasian 25yr woman who lives in Toronto, Canada. 5"4, very long blackish hair with occasional purple streaks. Not fat yet but if I keep eating fries I will be soon. Main interests are reading, eating, costume history- and reading about eating, and reading about costume history. Christian with reasonable interest in theology. Dedicated Tolkienite. Bellydancer, although I haven’t taken classes for about a year.

Geek cred? I’m more of a nerd. The mousey girl with the glasses and all the books. My nerd cred is that I memorise poetry for fun, read philosophy, also for fun.

I guess my geek cred would be that I like Cowboy Bebop, am a very dedicated Tolkienite/Inklings fan. I’m a gothgirl, and prefer electronic EBM music.

I’m married. So I’m not looking, sorry.

Single white male, 40, seeks… pleasantly-curvy non-smoking geeky female.

Geek cred: I read almost exclusively SF, helped build my friends’ solar-powered house, speak Esperanto, make my own DVDs, draw cartoons, have written stories in the Devilbunny shared universe, have studied classical animation at Sheridan College, and know WAY too much about The Lord of the Rings. I work as a technical writer, can find my way around the inside of a 'NIX box, design my own web pages, known which end of a soldering iron to hold, consider LabView to be a thing of beauty, and am into electronic music. I’m a lifetime member of Hostelling International. I have been known to camp in Algonquin Park. If I had a car, it would be a Smart fortwo.

Music: am into electronic(a), rock, some classical, some folk, some gothic/industrial. Am NOT into jazz, country, or rap. Examples: Sigur Ros, Persone, happy hardcore, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Kraftwerk, Icon of Coil, Abba, Air, KMFDM, Serge Gaisbourg, the Spoons, Rush, Kaj Tiel Plu, old Genesis, Spiritualized, Loreena McKennit… Anything from those eighties-music, electronic, or industrial threads would be an interesting start.

Politics: green socially-libertarian, yet fiscal conservative. Have been member of NDP, Green, Progressive Conservative… but not Liberal. Don’t mind debating Reform/Alliance/new-Conservative types. As far as I can tell, this makes me a screaming leftist in the US and centrist everywhere else.

Games: Descent, SimCity… basically, games where you can build levels/environments.

Location: the Greater Toronto Area. But not for long (see Plans).

Plans: get out of current job and go… somewhere. New job, new life. No family ties to hold me. New Zealand, Slovenia, and BC look nice.

Wow. I got a ‘How you doin’?’

The Geek Code reminds me… I have mine typed out in a text file at home… keep meaning to post it on my homepage. I shall post it once I am home.

For the record? I’m doin’ pretty good.

Hasn’t worked for me yet (but then I was very, very jet-lagged, having arrived at 6 am that day); guess I’ll have to try a Londope again one of these days. But then my geek creds are more of the liberal-artsy sort. Anyone else actually own not only a Chechen-English phrasebook, but a Russian-Uzbek-Farsi phrasebook?

I’m still holding out hope that the ChiDope on the 22nd will get interesting, though.

My match.com profile.

Nerd factor? Well, I’ve got four computers at home, two of which I built myself. One of them runs Linux (Libranet 2.8/Debian); the other vanilla Windows XP. There’s also an old 133 MHz Pentium running BeOS 5.0, and a working NeXTstation TurboColor workstation.

My dream girl is probably Tina Fey.

Nerd enough for ya’?

Well, I suppose I should …

SWF, 28, located in Northern NJ. Five feet even when the wind is right, definitely overweight, but in a curvy way (as opposed to a cellulite-spillover kinda way), red hair, brown eyes, smoker, mildly neurotic, but hey, who isn’t? Administrative peon is my chosen career–or at least the one I seem to keep gravitating to.

Interests include movies, television, music, comics, reading, conversation, and just about anything else that keeps my ass in close proximity to my couch. Big fan of fantasy books, sci-fi movies, and any activity that lets me wear a bodice in public. Former RPGer with no one left to play with (and no idea how to make my own characters, really–I had a boyfriend for that, at the time), love trivia games and anything that lets me show off that I’m smarter than you. Ideal candidate is someone who can beat me at Trivial Pursuit about half the time.

Um… I’m not really looking for anyone right now, but I just wanted to see how I stacked up against the competition.

34 yo SGWM (Single Geeky White Male) in Washington DC. Short medium brown hair, generally clean shaven, a tad pudgier than I’d like to be but I walk around two miles daily.

History geek - I’m a re-enactor. Not US Civil War - Thirty Years’ War (Army of Gustavus Adolphus). Our entire group isn’t even big enough to make a decent Confederate regiment and we don’t care. Matchlocks rule and so does “Rufty-Tufty”.

Language nerd - self-instructed in seven languages, going on eight - working on Arabic now. Passion for reading untranslated literature and newspapers.

Science/math nerd - amateur stargazer whose proudest possession is a hardbound copy of “Uranometria 2000.0”. Used to have a telescope but the city lights down here in DC don’t help all that much. I also rescued my high school calculus book from the last time my mom cleaned out her garage and am taking it just a little bit at a time. Calculus, to me, is just as mysterious and sexy as a shy nerdy girl.

And, for anyone who hasn’t seen me post here - Politics nerd. Activist Bolshevik with a 6’ by 3’ bookshelf packed with books, journals, and magazines. (The other bookshelf has all my language stuff in it.)

So there you have it. Like I said, I’m not actively looking for anyone, but single female Dopers whose curiosity is piqued are welcome to say “How you doin’?” and thereby provide me with reasons to attend Dopefests outside the Washington area.

I knew there was something I forgot… for the record, Angua is a stone babe.

Well this is going to be academic as hardly anyone lives near me (the one I believe is nearest is female, I think), so just for the craic:

My looks: Black hair (dyed), black clothes mostly, unskinny though not dramatically so.

My mind: Sharp, shy when with new people if I like them, ice-queen mode for eejits in pubs who I shred, normally easygoing but with certain things that can NOT be compromised on and some of those can be quite mundain, loyal to friends.

My interests: Music, first and formost of the traditional/world variety but have a bit of most genres including the dreaded rap and country, books (I’m happy with sci-fi and fantasy though it’s by no means all I read), talking talking talking, drinking, playing music whilst drinking, prone to sudden obsessions where I have to find out all I can about about a topic or person now now now.

(I think there’s some geek potential, though I sadly lack almost any computer knowledge)

What I want:

Male: geek, nerd or otherwise, with an original mind. They must have class. I like a bit of extravagance and a just a touch of arrogance.

Oh, I forgot. I smoke. Tobacco and the other stuff.

Don’t know if I quite qualify, but whatheheck…

SWF, 34, Minnesota. One kid. Government worker. 5’9ish, curvy, short red hair and hazelly/green eyes. And glasses.

Music: Prefer metal, old blues, bluegrass, classical. Anything from System of a Down to Sarah Vaughn. Would rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than rap or pop.

Movies: Anything works. Adore old screwball comedies (Spencer/Tracy), Hitchcock, Tarantino.

Books: I will admit to having no desire to read what is considered the “Classics”. Did that too much in college (BA in English, along with other stuff). Reads Spenser just to hear how the language flows. Right now on a Sanford/Martini/White kick.

Geekiness possibilities: Into comics, preferrably Marvel. Played Marvel, D&D, Rus and pretty much any RPG that was issued in the early 90’s. Alas, our group grew up (Just call me Peter Pan- I won’t!) and I haven’t played in afew years. Know The Princess Bride verbatim. Play paintball. With a vengance. Addicted to I Am Happy Bunny. No qualms about tearing apart my computer (Is it a bad thing if there are pieces left over?)

Okay. So I’m a quasi-geek. A Geek-lite. Mini-geek.

Oh- I smoke also.

Add to the possible geekiness: Very big into Monty Python. Have initiated LilMiss into the cult. It’s a good thing.

How could anyone resist Gamera? In addition to be really neat, he is full of turtle meat!

Thanks, I’m here all week. Try the fish!

Ok, I first must say, I’m single and a geek at heart as well. I have the RPG/comic books/Video Game/Sci Fi/Fantasy creds, I can quote any Simpsons or Buffy lines you’d like but, Sengkelat, I have to bow to you for this one:

At least tell me it was a first run episode? I mean if there were a Buffy/Angel/Firefly first run episode on, I could understand I guess…but the VCR option would be quite tempting as well.

That’s all.

I want to get in before the second page here…

SWM, 26, Baltimore area. I’m more of a “geek lite;” not weird or obsessive enough to be a “true” geek, but too weird for the norms. For example, I’ve never watched Buffy or Angel, but I’m still a Star Trek weenie. For “Kirk vs. Picard” I’d definitely choose Sisko as well. I’ve built most of my own computers and have been known to roleplay in the past.

I watch shows like Futurama, Aqua Teen, South Park, Sealab, and The Daily Show religiously. I don’t get much time for movies anymore, but I like almost anything sci-fi or otherwise “out there.” I’m really a tremendous music geek (see my classical music threads is Cafe Society for an idea) and go to concerts, musicals, operas, museums, you name it.

And yes, I do fly, but money’s been running a little short for that lately. PP/ASEL, 100+ hours in C172/U/G, next project is a few more ratings. That’s probably enough for now.

So catsix, how YOU doin’? /me slinks back into corner
