What the hell was that?!? Where was the big “shocking” finale we were told was coming? As far as I can tell, nothing happened that we didn’t see coming for weeks (OK, I’ll give you Rico getting a blowjob from a stripper, but that’s it).
So, Lisa is dead. We knew that weeks ago. They didn’t tell us if it was an accident, suicide or foul play.
Nate is in a tailspin, and turned to Brenda. Again, big surprise.
Ruth married her flavour of the month. OK, a bit of a surprise since we were told the she wanted to “slow down” 2 weeks ago, but they had discussed it, so no real surprise there either.
Claire is having regrets about her abortion. Duh, do you think so?
…don’t tell me the big-shock is supposed to be that some secondary character that was written out of the story an entire season ago turned up dead. Oooooh, big deal!
As far as season finales go, this was about as bad as “ER goes to the Congo”.
I can’t wait to see the family’s reaction when they realize that Nate knew Lisa was dead, and didn’t bother to tell them, and that Ruth got married that same evening.
How did Nate turn to Brenda? Unless I missed a scene, I didn’t even see them together this epsisode. I saw him turning to anonymous sex, not to Brenda.
Frankly, I’m glad to see some things resolved rather than a bunch of cliffhangers.
BTW, my HBO died just as they cut back to the Fisher house in the final scene. Anything significant happen in the last 30 seconds?
Nate showed up at Brenda’s house after his crazy suicidal ride with Dad & Lisa. (Of course, no one seems to know how Nate got her address).
It was they very last scene. Nate was all bloody from the var fight and showed up on Brenda’s doorstep. She let him in, and closed the door on the audience. Screens white’s out to Lisa’s Obit, and then rolls the end credits.
I wasn’t hoping for cliffhangers, just some excitement.
In my mind, the episode was all about Pairings. Ruth and George. . . who knows? It may work out. He may not be the creep some of us think he is.
Keith and David. . .a tentative re-grouping, but maybe better than nothing.
Clare and Maya. . . a baby in need of a mother. A could-have-been mother now in need of a baby.
Nate and Brenda. Brenda and French Horn Guy. Could be an interesting triangle there. Wonder if Brenda is still celibate.
Rico and the Stripper. Interesting and quite touching that he thought he had to pay her. He’s so used to paying for everything to keep Vanessa in the fold!
I loved Clare’s vision of Life After Death and I liked Gabe’s return as a happy person. I think Clare needed to know that he loved her. He was, after all, her first love.
And I am pleased that they wrapped up Lisa’s fate. I was among the group that thought Lisa would return inconveniently when Nate and Brenda had gotten back together. And I had always worried about her simply leaving Maya like that, if departing was her plan, when she had been so overly solicitous of Maya’s care.
I was curious about Arthur’s reaction to George and Ruth’s wedding dance. Is Arthur jealous of George? Does he know George from a time before this? There’s something there. . . and I’d like to know what it is.
I agree, annieclause. This episode had the usual underlying bits that I love in SFGU, but it was billed as a ‘shocking season finale’ which it simply wasn’t.
The confirmation of Maya’s death was anti-climatic. Nate hears the news, and before the audience can really react, we’re hard cut to a party scene where Rico is dancing to hot salsa music. All this time building up to it, and no reaction time allowed for the audience. Besides, I think we all knew she was dead; there was very little doubt.
I loved the reflection of Keith & David talking happily at the table while Mom & George danced happily in the background.
As for George, I think something’s up there. He’s gotta be a con-man, but I can’t figure out why a con-man would admit to 6 previous marriages. Perhaps A) Arthur will save the day later which would explain his oddly brief scene in which he just confused most of us, or B) He’s going to develop a case of jealousy next season for Ruth.
Maya is Lisa’s daughter and she is alive and strangely reserved for an infant who is subjected to much arguing and anger coming from her father and grandmother. Not to mention she hasn’t seen her mother for awhile…
I think George and Ruth’s marriage won’t last, but that’s about it. I don’t think he’s an evil person. He’s just sort of flaky. But so is Ruth. Both have been unfaithful to their spouses. George’s biggest problem was when he tried to talk to Nate and say that his family was worried about him. That’s overplaying your hand with an adult child.
The scene where Ruth sees her late husband crying and trying to hide from her was quite touching.
I still think (and someone else here mentioned it, maybe last week) that there’s something in the fact that George’s picture isn’t on the geology textbook he wrote.
Why would the writers put it in, otherwise? They don’t do too many guns on the mantel in this show. (Mantle?) Hmmmm.
Nate only knows that baby is his because Lisa said so. Now Lisa has committed suicide. Next season, bambina’s biological father is going to show up in Fisherland and try to get the kid back. Imagine trying to argue parental rights when you’re not even the parent.
I agree with AuntiePam. This guy is going to turn out to be one of those Lonely Hearts swindlers. Is the funeral home still in Ruth’s name or is it strictly the sons’ thing. I have a feeling that evil Funeral Home Whore woman is behind the George thing.
Whoa! We don’t know that Lisa committed suicide. We only know that she’s dead. She could have committed suicide. She could have been murdered. She could have had a “tragic” accident. She could have had an aneurysm or heart attack. All we know is that a body was found and it was a match to Lisa’s dental records.
I’ve always had this “Nate’s not Maya’s father” thought in the back of my brain, however, so I think it is totally possible for the biological dad to show up and make trouble next season.
Sure, we don’t KNOW that she committed suicide, but we do know she is/was a controlling bitch, and what better way to exert ultimate and eternal control over Nate?
I agree that there are no loose ends that will keep me on the edge of my seat until the next season. Just as well because who knows how long that will be this year. We do still have Russell to wonder about. Maybe Claire will drop out of school to care for Maya.
Kalhoun there have been scenes at George’s house, which was no shack. I think a secret past is indeed a likelihood, but not that he’s a swindler. Perhaps he’s not George at all and he killed him and assumed his identity. I still contend that they’ll be perfectly happy but that he is dying or will die in the upcoming season. Did anyone else think their choice of wedding music was odd?
I’m glad someone else wondered how Nate knew where Brenda lives.
Wouldn’t Nate have to go to Santa Barbara to ID her body? Will she be brought back to LA for a Fisher & Diaz funeral? Did Nate call Lisa’s sister?
slight hijack - I know the cop on the phone said the body they found matched Lisa’s dental records. How quickly does that really happen? If I were to croak unexpectedly I think it would take my boyfriend, mom, and the cops all working together a while to figure out what dentist I see. Should I put his name in my wallet in case of tragic death?
They would have given the dental records to the cops in the event that the body was found some day, probably a hair brush or something too so they could get a DNA sample.
I don’t think there’s anything to wonder about regarding this. After Brenda kissed Nate in a previous episode, she tried to call him several times over the next few days to talk about it. It makes sense that during one of her attempts she would leave a message giving Nate her phone number and address.
